BP outside front tyre wear

Recommended Posts

The outside of the front tyres seem to wear faster than the rest of the tyre. The tyres that were on the car when i bought it were like this, and the new set I put on ( with an alignment too ) are doing the same thing. I'm running around 36psi in them. 215/45r18 Bridgestone Potenza re003 Adrenaline. I drive the car like a nana, I don't chuck it around corners full noise. All the supension bushes etc are in good nick, and the wheel alignment sheet shows that all the settings are right in the middle of the tolerances. My car is factory stock, ride-height, suspension etc. It's had new front standard Bilsteins shortly before I bought it, car sits level and rides well, no problems.

To me, the car seems to have zero camber to a slight bit of positive camber when it's sitting there, so when turning the outside wheel will go more positive unless there is a massive amount of caster. How are you all dealing with this? Because going through 3 sets of fronts to a set of rears will get old quick.  Can you get longer bottom arms for these cars?

Welcome to RE003. :) They do that. Just swap fronts and rears frequently.

Can also ask for a bit more negative camber when doing alignment.

Ah, and make sure alignment was done to Legacy specs not Outback... attachment.php?attachmentid=184625&d=140

Weird, my BPE chews out the inside corners like good Subarus do.

First place to look would be the camber (obviously) followed by the toe. Usually you see too much toe-in causing scrubbing of the inside edge, maybe you've got toe-out?

Toe-out scrubs the inside of the tyre, toe-in scrubs the outside.

The car is set to the factory specs, maybe I should deviate from that a little an ddial in some Toe-out. Good reason to finish my home alignment kit, I have th eturnplates, just need to make the string line holders

That’s only true if the contact patch of the tyre is completely flat on the road.

Toe exaggerates the wear pattern from the camber. If you have 3 degrees of negative camber on a straight flat road doesn’t matter toe in or toe out you will have inside edge wear.

In an overly simplified explanation the camber decides where the wear will occur, the toe decides how fast/significant the wear will be. The exact specifics of wheel alignments are a lot more complicated with toe curves, vehicle loading and tyre rollover. Everything about wear changes once you start pushing the car around corners.

Like @boon said even with a perfect alignment with a Subaru you will probably end up with some inside edge wear on the fronts. They are a bit front heavy and you need to run some static negative in the front for the car to drive well in the bends so it compromises the wear a little.

Can you post up the wheel alignment sheet?

> Why do 003's do it?

I'd say they just provoke more aggressive driving. It's kind of a compliment to the tires, not really a negative thing.

Even if it seems like you're going full nana it's probably not the case. You'd have fitted Turanza or Ecopia for slow and steady.

Personal experience3 cars, 4 sets, stock suspension, 0.5-1.2 degree negative camber, no track days, getting around 40-50K from them (yeah, that low, I know, totally worth it :), outside edge dies first...

A couple of more extreme examples from circuit driving.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
