Engine out: timing belt, what else to do?

Recommended Posts

Hey all

I'm planning to pull my engine soon to do the timing belt. Just need some advice re what else to do, shopping list etc. Car in question is a 95 gf8 wrx, with 240kms. Stock, td04, going for reliability>power

So far I've decided on a Mitsuboshi timing belt as they're affordable at repco and supposedly (mrsubaru1387 on YouTube) that's what Subaru use factory. Plus an Aisin Waterpump, also oem going by mrsubaru1387. Is it worth changing Idlers pulleys etc or will I only know that when testing them for play?

I'm going to replace the Headgaskets with mls ones, I see there's 0.6mm ones 11044AA4839/11044AA482 are the part numbers for those. And get the heads/block skimmed as the car has overheated before and I don't want to take any chances. Plus I've read on here it isn't too expensive to get done.

I've read on Scoobynet replacing big end and main bearings is important too as well as a bottom end rebuild, but I'm not too sure about this...

I would like to do the clutch, it doesn't slip or anything but can't hurt to right. I'm thinking about exedy oe replacement as I've read it's slightly more aggressive than stock which is nice.

Gonna get the seal and gasket kit too.

Also look at maybe doing the cam seals, and don't forget the rocker cover seals :)
Look at replacing the rear main seal and resealing the rear kidney plate.

I'd do the clutch, since you're there, and they're not too expensive.

Probably reseal the sump while you've got it out too.

I just installed those subaru 1.6mm Head gaskets on my engine, they were $270 from the dealer.

If you've not doing this in the next couple of weeks, I'd definitely buy it all from Partsouq/Amayama.

I'll definitely do all those seals, cheers. I'm gonna look into doing it all slow and carefully with the big seal puller tool, don't want to damage anything, clean up any surfaces with a wire wheel drill attachment.

1.6mm, are they the best? I will not be doing anything really quick, no rush, never done this before so will be doing it slow n steady haha.

Yeah by still same bore and EJ engine.
likely just a few more holes for oils and avcs etc in the newer ones.

won’t be direct parts match unless you had MLS originally.

nz gaskets likely has the outlines of you want to look them up.

also go with the cast impeller water pump.
i got the cast one for mine. Most aftermarket were pressed steel and they don’t pump as well.

Genuine timing kits and engine seals are usually only marginally more expensive than aftermarket. I'd recommend pricing up both.

There's a TradeMe user called ejparts that has sourced me genuine parts for less than the dealer prices.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
