Newbie + question about boost control solenoid

Hi everyone,

After wanting to get one for years and years, I finally took the plunge and got myself a '98 STi Type R.  It is a bit rough so I'm in the process of trying to clean it up and restore it back to standard spec.

One of my recent discoveries is that the plumbing to the boost control solenoid is a bit suspicious...in the sense that I think the previous owner blocked/corked a line..

I had a look at a previous post (herebut the images used there don’t match up with the setup in my car.

So is anyone able to comment on where these lines should go?

Here’s a photo of my setup (sorry about poor quality, I am having trouble linking it from an external source):

Line 1 is the one that is blocked/goes no where.

Line 2 goes to the top of the intake plenum.

Line 3 goes to the waste gate actuator.

Line 4 goes to the intake pipe (after the air box but before the turbo).

Am I correct in thinking that line 1 needs to be connected to the nipple on the turbo compressor?

Not my area and someone with older car knowledge will confirm but...

Looks like it matches this one

attachment.php?attachmentid=68059&d=1502

1 to the turbo outlet ‘nipple’

3 intake manifold.

4 wastegate actuator.

2 intake manifold to map sensor. The hose in the U shaped bend in the photo and not labeled. See matching brown wiring connector.

Is it running a stock looking wastegate actuator?

have you got a boost gauge or log the boost from the car?

i ask as if not get some logs or recordings as fixing things may lead to more boost and break stuff.

Sounds quite a lot like it's freeboosting... any chance it has a sneaky external wastegate somewhere?

EDIT: Actually, got a pic of the lines at the wastegate actuator? Or does line 3 go to it, with no Tee or anything in-line? Would indeed suggest it's freeboosting.

Hey Gripless,
Thanks for getting back to me.

While that pic has similarities with my set-up, it isn't the same so I'm kinda unsure about taking it as 100% relevant (as in, I don't know the source of that image and it isn't uncommon for car manufacturers to make slight changes over time).

I'm really hoping that someone with a v4 STi will be able to help me out with some detailed pics...
Or even better, I'd be super-keen to try and meet someone with a standard v4 STi so we could park them next to eachother and I can figure just what is missing/incorrect...it's hard to know what is wrong when you don't know how it should be.

Good point about a boost reading but unfortunatley I don't have a gauge installed (part of the plan to get one if I can find a tasteful 3-gauge set-up for the empty area beneath the stereo). And it looks to have the standard wastegate.

I'm only driving it very gently so won't be taking any chances until it is properly sorted.

Cheers,
Matt

Hi boon,
It seems to be running a standard wastegate actuator and wastegate.

And yes, line 3 runs as a single line directly from the actuator to the solenoid; no Tee or anything.

Cheers,
Matt

why not just plumb a cheap mechanical gauge in to the nipple to see what is going on before you have a very sad day.
But get some photos detail on the wastegate in case it’s over tensioned or connected to somewhere stupid.

FYI found this.

looks like they added a v4 a line from turbo to wastegate with a T piece in the middle

Above also matches the 1999 2000 P1 Sti manual page 28 and through to 35ish has hand drawn diagram.

also try your chassis number in partsouq.com and browse the diagrams. Should be helpful

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
