Is this bad for my transmission?

Hey guys

Had a little incident today. Was boosting hard in 2nd gear and then went to shift to third. Do this all the time no problem at around 5,000 - 5,500 rpm and usually smooth, but today my foot got caught and I basically dropped the clutch too fast and accidently slammed the car into third gear really hard and the car made an awful Clunk/Thud noise.

I have seen people talk about shock load and that is what breaks transmissions. Is that only when launching or is it possible to shock load when travelling at around 70km and then slamming into third gear.

It only happened once and car seems to drive fine but I just worry about this stuff, especially since the vehicle has done 225,000km and so I know that eventually I am going to need to replace the gearbox.

How would I know if I have damaged something? Car is due for a service soon, is there anyway they can look at it or would they have to strip it down and that would just cost too much and not be worth it?

If the gearbox does blow (Have a 2002 WRX), what are the best options. I am trying to research but it is hard to find pricing, if I should buy second hand, rebuild, what model I should get a 5 speed from, how much labour should roughly cost?

Shock load is generally 'at launch' a crunchy change is less of a load issue as you already have forward momentum, in your example 'it still works' and that is a good sign

Some of those little crunchy bits may not be attached anymore though, and sloshing around in the gearbox lubricant, draining said lubricant at the next service will tell a tale, think of it as reading the entrails, but no animals are harmed in the process 🤣

Hey

Been driving it today and I notice that when I shift into third from 2nd or 4th it is making a kind of noise. It is hard to explain and it is not very loud but it sounds ling a "ching," noise, like 2 bits of metal clanging together very quietly. The car has always done that when changing into 5th gear but never in any other gear and it is usually quite quiet, however it is now doing it in 3rd gear which is the gear i accidently slammed and it is quite a lot louder. It is still not easy to hear exactly, but it is making me anxious.

So I can prepare, I am getting my car tuned soon to run about 250whp which I know will put more strain on trans. I have done some research and it said around 300bhp or 250whp was the upper safe limit for stock WRX 5 speeds. If the gearbox does go, what should I replace with to keep cost around $1,500?

I don't really understand the options as it seems like you can rebuild, recondition, replace etc.

Do 5 speeds from say a Hawkeye WRX or a 2012 WRX fit in? Are they better to put in? Is there another option that would be a slight upgrade at not too great a cost?

Cheers

I bet the rear diff or the exhaust just hit something... or each over... they both move around a lot.

You probably haven't done any detectable damage to the gearbox... just chill out... if it break it breaks, worry about it then.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
