1st too fast, 2nd too slow? Lugging?

Recommended Posts

SO I have a bugeye and I find that quite often I am in that dreaded grey zone of "too fast for 1st, too slow for 2nd." It mostly happens when I am approaching a light or sign and I start to slow down and i am about to depress clutch and suddenly traffic starts moving. Now, I have to come to a complete top to get into 1st and by this point I am going too slow, like 1,000rpm so taking off in 2nd is usually out of the question.

Usually I just stop, shift into first and go, and anyone behind me can suck it up, but today I was at a major intersection and busiest time of day and I did not want to stop so I was in 2nd gear, I was coming to a stop and it happened but instead of coming to a stop, I just decided to take off in 2nd gear at 1,100rpm ish. I probably only gave it maybe 10-15% throttle but it felt like the car was violently trying to go forward but couldn't and shaking.

This only probably happened for 2 or so seconds until I hit about 2,000rpm.

My question is, I know lugging is bad and never do it but is doing it once or twice any issue? The engine has 205,000km so it is an older engine which is what is making me worried!

Haha I am more curious what you should do in these situations as well? Like do you guys just toll in second and slip clutch or do you just stop and screw the people behind? Haha

leave it in second... slip clutch if you need to.

Also, manuals suck in traffic... maybe get an auto :)

Haha no way I am giving up my maunal I hate autos :P.

Ok yeah I'll slip clutch if I need to.

So I should not worry about any damage? Just don't like throught of doing things that are bad to an engine with over 200,000km ya know, especially since it has just been tuned :).

It's getting very hard to answer your questions of this nature seriously. (If you are not the guy that is always worried about everything breaking, then I apologise.)

No your engine is not going to be damaged from a couple of seconds of shuddering while slowly accelerating in bumper to bumper traffic.

Sorry yeah I am that guy.

I really don't mean it to not be taken seriously I have anxiety with certain things and I guess my car just triggers it when I do silly things that I just think would cost me stress/money.

Sorry for you guys having to look at my stupid posts haha.

I have been trying to learn more and more about cars so I can hopefully turn a wrench myself one day, which would really help with these worries haha.

Thanks for responding tho

You don't have to stop to get it into first.

For the bugeyes and a lot of the old 5 speeds you do. Unless I am literally stopped or rolling at maybe 2-4km/h the gear will crunch and not go in very nicely at all. Even rev matching does not help. it is quite a common thing with early 2000 WRXs.

We are familiar with the issue... but you can generally just smash it in.

Cant say I noticed it driving around in a GG for many years, or maybe I'd gotten used to it doing many years before that in the BG which probably shared the same 5 speed box

Unlikely things are possible with a clutch and some finesse, that's why we like them.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
