GCG Bolt on turbos

Hey guys,

Anyone on here have any real life experience with the stock location GCG GTX2867R or GTX3071R bolt on turbos?

I know there are a lot of variables but how responsive and roughly when do you see full boost with these?

I know there's a few going to say stock location is a waste of time but this is specifically for a project where we are keeping stock location turbo. But wanting more than what a VF can offer.

Be glad of any feedback.

I have not used one...  but a guy in Wellington was using a bolt on Tomei on his Type R and it made plenty of power... 280 kw at the wheels... he complained it was a bit laggy... not sure just how laggy it was and not sure on how big it was compared to a 3071 either.

Interesting feed lback on the Tomei

Be really interested to know if funkys was a GCG stock location or not. They claim similar response to stock turbo but it would be good to have some real life feedback.

Also there is no work done to the heads on the motor it would be going on.

Would like more power than a VF but if it is going to have heaps more lag, I may be better to stick with vf23 or 22 and sacrifice some power for quicker response.

I expect it would kick a VF turbo's ass in performance... spool a bit slower... get spanked by a full sized version.

A bit of extra lag just means you have to work a bit harder to get it up and going.

The stock intake is pretty restrictive too... and the tmic with a bigger turbo?

The Tomei bolt on was used with a fmic btw.

Yes no doubt top end it would spank a VF. This particular build is running a custom water to air top mount intercooler so cooling should be reasonable.......if it worked well I may potentially look at replacing my VF22 on my recently tune RA also. Which is running a P West cold air intake and P West TMIC.

I did a test last weekend driving the car around town with the intercooler waterspray on Auto. After 15min drive the intercooler  was very cool still. So this would help cooling if I went to a bigger turbo on the RA....and yes I do know it doesn't take long to drain the tank in the GC8 waterspray system.

Borgwarner 6758 has the flow for 300wkw and spools about the same as a big VF. 6258 will spool faster but obviously less flow. They will fit in the stock location but obviously not on the stock flange so a custom uppipe/downpipe is required.

I'm not a lawyer, and in fact was escorted from my law faculty for gross moral ineptitude (and poor personal hygiene), but I'm going to say that your chart does not meet the standard of proof required to backup your claims :P

Ok this thing is looking likely to happen. And leaning towards the GCG turbos for their straight bolt on features. Engine is still open deck so realise I can't push huge boost or shoot for 300kw.

However would I have similar driavability out of GCG GTX3071R compared to a VF22 but with more punch?

Would be happy with 240-250kw. So considering if I would be better to go down to the GTX2867R.  For more response. Be interested in some feedback.

Are you going to be more disappointed if it's a bit laggy or more if it's a bit underwhelming when spooled?

Personally I would go for bigger... and be prepared to work hard to keep it spooled. But that's for a race car. Road car, go small and it will be way more fun.

Its a for a road car and I enjoy how the VF22 performs so ideally would want similar response as that, and I'm guessing the 2867 would do that but also have a little bit more up top.

Surely you want it to perform a lot better for it to be worth all the money? I think the 2867 will s*** all over the vf22 anyway.

What is the engine built like?

even that spike to 25 psi in the graph @boon posted may have to be tuned out to keep your engine happy.

I have a feeling you’ll end up with 20 psi max and just less of a fall off since the turbo won’t choke.

While that sounds and looks good on paper, it doesnt always feel great when driving.

I’ve tried that and it was more like the Audi RS4 etc or big non turbo v8.

you start to get that initial surge then it sort of just keeps pulling. Not so much kick of thrown back into the seat.

Basically it be exactly the same feel as you have now just not run out at the top end. It’ll be very fast and good to drive but it losses some of the raw feel.
depends on what you like if that is ok or not. If you like v8 and Audi feel then it’ll be great.
personally I like a car that kind of feels like it’s going to kill you, but never does.

@Gripless interesting points there. Good feedback. The engine has forged internals but is an open deck block so i wont be running more than 20-21psi.

I certainly don't want it to feel like a non turbo V8 haha. And yes want to keep that raw feeling that kicks you in the back. Hence why i am thinking about the smaller GTX2867R over the GTX3071R.

aftermarket rods as well?

V7 STI rods, mahle forged pistons, genuine subaru bearings, V8 STI crank. All those parts should be well capable of 240-250kw which is all I am looking for so need something a little bigger than VF turbo.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
