  1. NZEFI in CHCH have a pretty good rep, a close mate of mine got his V5 GC8 sti tuned there, real helpful and explained the process and answered all questions he had noobish or not, they can also supply parts out of house. I myself have a V3/4 sti type r that i plan on taking there for a new ecu and tune once the ol coin and partner allows lol

  2. I had a similar issue with my sti type r, ended up being a combination of a hole in the under manifold intake and a bung fuel pump so upgraded pump to Walbro, new silicone intake and bam purred like a kitten. Previous signs I had was the jerking and missing when driving idled fine cold or warm

the pictures are your power steering rack leaking, it needs to be replaced/repaired. it is illegal to drive it as it is as it is not up to WOF standard.

cheers mate thought it was the rack but wanted to confirm, yeah one should know not to drive the car when ya losing so much PS fluid, so needless to say it hasnt moved since i found the pool of fluid on the garage floor but cheers for the heads up on how its not WOF standard

the noise is still the p/s pump complaining - if you run it dry they can seize or get damaged so make sure its topped up.

Also if its leaking- causing it to run dry, find and fix the leak, as PS fluid is REAL flamable.

Also make sure you put in ATF - not normal ps fluid as subbies need ATF (check the lid of your PS pump) DX3 from memory

    Cheers funky much appreciated,

just a note rolled the car out of its sleep time to find a pool of ps fluid :o

so lets play this game tomorrow of lets find the leak and pray its not the rack buggered

yea i reckon more so this Phil...

Update, gotta stop being paranoid power steering fluid makes the sound go away haha cheers y'all

  6. Hey all just done a freshen up of my ej20 on my type r (photos and info will be written up soon) but we swapped out the vf24 that was on there for a vf30 great upgrade big difference but today after I warmed the car up when I started to drive it all of a sudden it sounded like I had a set of gilmores on my car I'm unsure of if this is safe as it has never sounded like that since the turbo change all of about 400ks ago. I did reuse the oil feed line from the vf24 and used the bolts from the 30 any one have any ideas? Being starved of oil maybe??

*UPDATE* so we did figure it out the problem was low power steering fluid due to a leaking part (attached photos) they arent the greatest photos but hopefully somone can distinguish it.

I like those front bumpers but not a fan of the rest of the body kit but looks pretty tidy and at least you dont have chome mags on the new one haha. but thats personal preference

how about some under bonnet pics, im keen to see how that pipework runs.

Yeah will take some pics once we put the engine back in, I love the Old candyman car RIP I brought the car in this state IMO I love how it looks still room for improvement for sure I

Factory ecu can not be tuned dude. But a good electronic boost controller set to about 18psi is the safe limits of your vf23.

Forget headers they are a waste of your money. Instead look at a good downpipe and exhaust. Keep your factory airbox, replace the filter while ur fixing her up.

Add a 22mm rear sway bar to ur mod list with $$ saved on headers

also no to headers check, it has a pretty breathy exhaust got note an flow, down pipe looks to be after market (2 into one) Simesse maybe

ok and rear sway bar, all being noted down Big thanks guys, its pretty hard to get local advice from timaru considering with my last gf8 i had nothing but issues and showering money to "mechanics" for no gain or reliablity kinda put a damper on trying to get a lil more hp outta the bottle until i got this type r, actually does anyone know of the previous owner its old number plate was WKDWRX??

    Cheers Funky

haha yeah i kinda questioned that question in my head about the ecu but posted anyways, ya never know truly till you ask, is there any sort of upgrade ya can do or replace ya ecu aside from the G4 i keep seeing possum link etc etc or get ya ecu chipped but i dont really wanna muck around with something that can still do a job, so the factory ecu will run the bolt on mods with out issue?

Geez 18psi when gazzy took it for a spin im sure he said it was already pushing 17psi i reckon 16 imo but anways, any sort of recommendation of a decent controller?

  10. At the moment Im preparing to remove my engine from my 97 type r first time removing a ej20 but will be having the assistance of Gazzy which is a great sigh of releif, so anyways once out im going to get the cambelt done and head gaskets etc etc just for peace of mind, now I am looking at doing the usual bolt ons ie pully kit, external waste gate, semi tuned extractors, electronic boost controller, upgrade my flywheel, clutch few others i have proberly forgotten. Can anyone inform me if the computer i have atm assuming its the factory computer for my type r if i would have to get anything done to it ie reflash or whatever its called i know my best option is G4 the beast but $$ does not allow at the moment. Its also running a VF23 and seems to go hard but what is a safe zone limit for them boost wise, at this stage im not looking at going down the road of a fully forged demon im wanting a reliable, nice sounding sti that has the potential to be a lil more than standard.

Any info whatso ever related to any part of my vehicle would be greatly appreciated.

  11. Been reading this thread for a while and never posted as actually never done anything till now.

Today removed 90% of my front end, fmic, drained the fluids and started to remove/disconnect alot of the pipes/hoses so when Mr Gazzy has time to come around and help me remove zee engine.

not much else is going to happen as off to the west coast for 2 weeks *sigh* just as i was starting to make progress, oh and sat in my front seat to remember the fun before i thought it was a good idea to strip it down and drive a house sized ford transit every day instead.

  12. I just brought a 97 type R coupe a few weeks ago and slowly investing a lil bit of money into it atm so far everything is GC8 generic so to speak nothing really differs from the usual GC8 wrx/sti aside from rear doors as you mentioned, i will admit though it is the best car i have owned so far alot of fun took a bit to get used to lol but well worth every cent.

  13. Just changed my coil pack on my GF8 as the last one was cracked, had new plugs put in prior to the issues, after plugs where done i couldnt drive my car properly as when i started to move off it started lurching like my fuel pump was F'N out but that was replaced about 3mths ago so cant be that so put it down to the crack in coil, now replaced the coil pack and now on warm up it will sit at about 1200rpm then after about a minute drop down to around 200-400rpm its never in the 3 years ive had this done it im not will to drive it until i find whats going on, anyone have any ideas please? im baffled as nothing has really changed aside from changing the busted coil pack.

  14. After my issues with the rex gazzy2000 offered to assist in the diagnosis of my problems which led to resolving the issue, after listening and watching and learning a hell of a lot from him my appreciation for my car has increased and am now motivated to keep my sti and modify it to a spec i was origionaly aiming for. so all in all BIG thanks to Gazzy2000 bloody top bloke full of info and advice and the paitence to teach and to lend a hand in future projects, i would have spent a small fortune in seeking this advice elsewhere. Hope this is a ego boost for him because its deserved :D and big thanks to other clubsub members who are always there to share their advice and know how thats what makes this forum in a league of its own above other forums.
