Hey all just putting this out there for your thoughts and suggestions, had a mild bit of exhaust work done on my 98 sti had a simese downpipe and larger exhaust put on, after that was done i noticed a miss in the boost like it would hit peak and then jerk back off like a big miss not fun when ya pass a car on the open road and as ya pass the car is missing and sounding like arse, and now today i warmed up the rex no issues, drove to BP gased up and drove off no issues drove for around 5min pulled into the diary and when i went to take off after that the car started to lurch quite severly and sounded really sick, as much as i didnt want to i crawled it home at 5ks an hour (the drive home was only about 1km) bt even at a slow crawl it was battling could this be the afm??

Hey man, i could be keen just waiting on getting someone experenced to check out my engine so i know of the best path to take i can defnitly see the future holding a new engine and seeing as yours has a power figure closer to what i am wanting i could be keen, just curious if you could send me some more info like how many ks on engine and possiably more photos, if i can sometime soon i might make a trip to chch to have a look at it if you dont mind
  3. cheers for that man il defnitly hit up tony at RDL aye, and there is a bit of heat wrap under the gasket about 300mm long, its all good im getting rid of the tuned lenth i think so next extractors can all be all heat wrapped.
  4. yeah i have learnt now that no one really knows subarus here in timaru haha but when someone talks the talk and gives ya confidence in their work i guess i was a lil to trusting, so its gonna go to chch hopefully before xmas and hash out where to go from there any recomendations for quality workmanship in chch for subarus???
  5. hey guys thanks for the input,i dont wanna name the mechanic at this stage but he is local, and im located in Timaru. i would have thought they would have used subaru gaskets to be honest, but if not il have them done when i get the rest of the engine fixed, contemplating a full rebuild now and maybe invest a few more $$ into and start to do it properly by someone with a good rep, also on the vid side i will take one later of the rex running and try n post it hopefully will help out, im over ringing workshops and having them "no time" to look at it.

Im having some big issues with my 98 wrx sti, i just had some work done on my car minor in a way, had my tappet cover gasket replaced due to oil leak which has been replace 4x now apparently they cant find the sorce of the leak even though there was a crack in the bottom of the origional cover which has been replaced, at the same time i had a set of tuned lenth headers(which will be for sale soon not my thing) put on with expansion flanges and fixed uppipe (no heat wrap due to lack of space) and had to be bent slightly because of the clearance between the headers and the tappet cover, at the same time i had a simese down pipe fitted and into a varex 3" muffler now i was pleasently surprised with the results until i took it for a drive to wanaka where it all has started to go bad, now my oil leak is back, there is a knocking coming from the engine (maybe big end bearing???) and when my turbo goes to hit boost there is a clicking as well as the turbo noise which is highly worrying and it also battles to get to 1.0bar which has never had the problem, i have not driven it since getting back to home i have turned it over and warmed it up to see if noise is still there and to my disappointment it is, after spending well over 2.5k on the oil leak and the minor exhaust upgrade i am left feeling confused and disapointed, has anyone had similar issues from these modifactions and can anyone recommened a good mechanic/specalist in the canterbury region as i dont want to take it back to the the same place only to feel un trusting of the work they do. the engine itself is well looked after and not abused and just clicked over the 100,000k mark ???
  7. i have an issue that is starting to worry me a lil, i thought i would ask on here before i delved into it. My 98wrx sti has been running mint till the other day when i warmed the rex up and took my partner to work, when we got to said destination there was smoke coming out from the engine i popped the hood to see there was a bit of smoke coming from the front of the turbo now im not dumb but this is not something common in rex's i wouldnt think, im gonna to remove the heat sheild from the turbo to get a better look, i was told maybe the oil return line was blocked or stuffed or coz the car was sitting for 3days on a lean it may have oil build up inside, im just after some advice from anyone who has a vage idea or has had the same problem with theirs any info would be greatly appreciated.
