Do you need any cats in a turbo back exhaust for legality?
Been looking through the lvvta site and haven't really found any hard answers. Is keeping just the pre turbo cat enough?
Here is the rule:
2. A vehicle (other than group L vehicle or a class MA or MC motorsport vehicle with a valid motorsport authority card) that was first registered in New Zealand on or after 1 May 2010 and manufactured from 1 January 1990 has a catalytic converter removed where there is evidence that one was originally fitted, and there is no written evidence issued by a TSDA that the vehicle passed a prescribed metered emissions test in this condition (Note 5) (Note 6) (Figure 11-2-1).So if your car was first registered in NZ before May 2010 then you can safely remove it without problems.
With that being said, I put mine through the last 3 WOF's with no cat converters and had no problem (first reg'd July 2010), it'll simply depend on where you take in in to get your WOF.

you could always give that cable a try. For the Vag-Com cables, it will only work if it's an FTDI chipset, may show up as FT232 driver in the OS, as kwi_fozze said the newer models use CANBUS, so if it has CANBUS the cable will be useless.
With a Mac though it might be a bit more difficult to play around with drivers, so a tactrix cable might be your only safe option, they are actually priced pretty reasonably from their website: http://www.tactrix.com/
If you can run a windows OS dual boot using boot camp you'll probably find it easier to get going, as if you run into any problems there are way more people able to help.

I did all mine on a mac running Windows 7 through bootcamp. Romraider is java and will work on osx, and looks like ecuflash has a version for OSX here: http://www.tactrix.com/?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=36&Itemid=58
ProcessWest sell a TMIC in Australia for a little over $1k AUD: http://www.processwest.com.au/products/subaru/04-09-liberty-gt-legacy/top-mounted-intercooler
I'm running the stock TMIC and running about 1.25bar, runs fine for me, but if you want to go much higher than that probably good to go aftermarket.

Nice man, looks nice and tidy

here you go:
http://www.amazon.com/NGK-ILFR6B-Laser-Iridium-Spark/dp/B000GZCU3O
I've got their downpipe on mine, only get one if you're willing to spend a bit more on the extra costs involved.
+ Tune
+ Hi-Flow Cat or Resonator (I've had both on mine, recommend the hi flow cat).
Check out this thread related to the downpipe: http://clubsub.org.nz/forum/showthread.php?27270-Subtech-Downpipe-Review/page16

also you can pick up the right spark plugs on amazon for pretty cheap if you can wait a few weeks for delivery, should save a few bucks

Best off just researching and asking questions on both here and liberty.asn.au
Ignore wikipedia or legacygt.com or any other US based site/forum, they will most likely focus on the USDB 2.5L models which have completely different configurations for each model year.
Here's one helpful piece of information I've used in the past, details the suspension revisions over the years.

too low?
-
had a hi flow cat installed in place of a resonator after my catless downpipe.
Sounds a wee bit different but not much More importantly, no check engine light, exhaust doesn't reek anymore, and no knock so far which means I won't need a retune
-
THey don't seem to have the same 'glass' reputation that the early 2000 WRX's get.
-
Yeah thats nice as! Good excuse for a road trip haha!
Probably a newbie question, but is there much difference in the NZDM to JDM?
By the way thanks for all the responses its been great!
They are pretty much the same, only difference being the NZDM models were all Spec.B trim.
From 2008 onwards NZDM models were the same 2.5L that the Aussies got, however you don't see many around of them. These were single scroll and the engines are prone to failure

chuck it on trademe, apple stuff always has good resale so you'll get a good price on it.
-
heh, probably location then. There's a few dealers around here that seem to have a constant supply, I'm on the lookout for an older legacy as a project and all I see are 2005+ ones
So I assume you haven't found any facelift's with the 6-speed and SI-drive? I've not ridden in one but hear good things about them.
-
10km/l average is awesome for one of these. Who did your tune??
14k id say is quite high, look at what it needs thats 1k there plus the seedy boost tap, id be closer to 10-11k but thats just me.
got mine tuned by Cryotune from the legacygt.com forums, he's got a really good reputation their, really cheap and he has very good customer service. It was an e-tune though, so didn't just drive in drive out.
Agree about the price, when I bought mine it was hard to find in manual, but they're all over the market now, trademe is full of them.

fuel cut is around 1.3bar I think, but it shouldn't be able to hit that unless the downpipe has been opened up, I only know as one of my vac hoses was split causing fuel cut as soon as I had my downpipe installed.
I've found fuel consumption to be really good on mine, and even better with a tune, my gauge sits about 10km/L for most of the time, can't complain about that for mostly city driving.

if you don't have any luck and end up keeping the muffler, I have a similar setup on my legacy, has twin pipes so will sound a bit different.
I've had a resonator installed at the base of the downpipe, and it sounds quite good I reckon, not as deep as I would like, but doesn't drone at all so can't complain, video here:
I never had the mufflers before the downpipe so not a true comparison sorry.
The other thing I hear is that replacing the center resonator with straight pipe could give it much more of the low down sound you're after, although i'm not convinced, surely wouldn't that make it even more raspy? If anyones removed their center resonator I'd be keen to know the results you had.

sedan muffler should look something like this:
http://www.subaruspeed.co.nz/products/exhaust-muffler-impreza-01-05
notice the sti logo is at the base of the tip.
wagon mufflers they look like this:

-
Apparently the S-GT's respond really well to having the downpipe opened up, but they certainly don't look as nice as the later WRX's with the wide body
-
Someone 's trying to convince me, that all EJ208 B4/GTB's came with a varex type mufflers as a standard - is it correct? (apparently, that's according to factory service manuals)
don't the twin turbo's go from unequal length to equal length exhaust pulses when coming onto the secondary turbo? Certainly would explain a noise change when that occurs.
-
sorry haven't heard of anyone doing it in NZ, but i'm sure some of the users here could recommend a shop that could do this here.
-
alot of the Aus guys get the VF38's rebuilt with VF34 internals, worth looking into I reckon, as you'll get better results after your tune.
-
Gave my wagon a good wash yesterday, then stuck a new sticker on this morning
-
This guy installed some Evo 9 recaro\'s in his, give it a read, apparently he\'s using sparco brackets with some modification to fit.

You could always just do it and if you don't get pulled up on it then you'll be fine.
I'd recommend putting a hi flow cat back in once you do though, as the sound it makes is pretty crap with no cats, and a resonator will sort it out somewhat but with a hi flow cat it sounds way better.
