I spilt smelly diff oil in the boot and the carpet is oily and stinks bad. Does anyone have suggestions how to get the oil out?

At present the carpet is clipped to the garage wall and draining oil out.

/quote]soap and a high pressure water blaster

Pretty sure degreaser would bother the carpet

Thanks, I was going to degreaser it then water blast it. Will soak with detergent then water blaster it. That should fix it

I\'ll be surprised if you can get the smell out. Might need a trip to pick-a-part. I have a beanie that still smells after 3 years

and a lot of washing. It\'s faded over time, but it\'s still there.

I\'m left wondering how and why you stuck your head in diff oil ???

I use them on dirt and grass - they are awesome

    Any recommendations?

I look for a full 8mm of tread, and square blocks (not wriggly) with sharp snipes.

Do you know if the attributes for dirt/grass performance are transferable to snow/ice? Obviously, the full 8mm tread is a gimmie but the actual tread profile etc?

for snow and ice, the prime attribute is the sipe

My rear diff has been whining for a few years. Got a near-new diff from a generous Stoffa for a great price, and Webster installed it on his hoist, with me assisting.

There were sparkly bits in the oil, and the diff was very noisy on overrun. All vanished now :)

So much easier on a hoist (plus air tools)...

My mechanic mate did mine in 20 minutes and that included pressing the pinion flange off the 2 diffs and swapping them over (V9 or so has a different PCD on the flange, go figure)

He then declared that 20 minutes was now the benchmark for his workshop, and anyone taking longer than that would have some explaining to do :D

we used air tools only when stuff was too tight otherwise it was 3/8 socket set. Took 2 hrs due to neither of us done this before
  5. Have you ever had an inkling that maybe the fuel gauge fell quicker after the needle reached half way? I did, so I did a fully scientific experiment and found out my hunch was true.

Here is what I specifically measured for my car, you mileage may vary ;):

Fuel Gauge litres between gauge marks

    F 0

    3/4 17

    1/2 14

    1/4 13

    E 10

    No gas 5

So what does this tell me? That the distance between F and 3/4 gives the longest driving distance, and that the distance between 1/4 and E gives the shortest distance. And when it\'s down to E, then the 5 litres left in the tank is really only fumes, because of the saddle shape and shallow shape of bottom of the tank.

It\'s confirmed my thoughts that the fuel runs out quicker at the bottom half of the gauge.

has anyone heard about the thermostat playing up so that it stops the o2 sensor from working as its common on Nissans

this is why its called the "Dumb question thread"

Yeah I have similar problem with my Starlet but from different source. The water temp sensor has gone faulty so ecu makes fuel rich to protect against hotness and leanness in cylinder.
  7. What if you\'ve got discarded pieces from 2 really broken gearboxes? Is anything worth keeping?

Have inadvertantly destroyed 2x type-r gearboxes in 1 year, and have all the left-over parts. I\'ll keep the spare dccd internal unit but the dccd case itself is a little shattered - don\'t ask - some dodgy purchase I never noticed till too late. :)

About the only other thing maybe worth keeping could be the main case - someone please tell me this too is useless.

Help me throw this stuff away.

  8. FWIW, I\'ve had a MacBilt sump for over 9 years in the GC8, after lunching a BEB at Manfield in 1994. This sump has been nothing short of awesome. The car\'s done 7 yrs at Manfield at InterMarques and Road and Track days, a solitary Pukekohe day, and several Taupo days - all tracks.

This is a well-proven sump for my car.

This car still has the same rebuilt engine that the MacBilt sump was originally fitted to at the same time as the rebuild, and has done 3x full logbookfuls of MotorSport events. I cannot recommend sump highly enough.
