  1. As said, 2.0t's definitely have the edge with performance no doubt, but if servicing costs and reliability is a factor for you? and you mostly want to cruise in it but have the power when needed, go with the 3.0R, and better chance finding an unmolested one than the 2.0t imo.

Oh and yeah they sure know how to skull 98 too, but you can still get reasonable mileage if light footed, esp on the highway.

  2. will report back once we return from holiday, getting it done right before doing a fair few km's up North so should know pretty quickly if its sorted. Subaru in Palmy North have told me around $100 for the reset/ reflash so thats not bad at all.

i had to get the TCU reset done down at the dearship - they also did a small driver update and trans fluid flush at the same time and fixed up the strange behaviour in ours.

cheers its a good place to start. Were you getting an intermittant rough downshift by any chance? and can you recall how much that cost you to get done? I have priced up atf alone needing 9.8 litres at $50 odd for 4lts :o does that sound right?

  4. I'm looking to do a reset to my Transmission Control Unit (TCU) in my wagon to get it to re-learn shift patterns etc and hopefully smooth out some strange behaviour.

Does anyone know the correct procedure for this? Does the 20min battery disconnect work on the tcu? or is there a way to do it without losing the memory and all settings on my after market headunit?

Also can anyone recommend a good value auto trans fluid for the BP5?

    Help greatly appreciated.

  5. yeah the gearbox is definately not a deal breaker, I just don't think its as smooth in operation at times as some boxes out there, but it's by no means terrible. I find it perfoms best in 'Sport' auto mode when still allowed to self shift. (once touched goes into tiptronic mode and needs to be manually shifted)

Hmm ok.. Well i'm now looking at the 2004 Legacy 3.0R.. took it for a drive today, great to drive.

Questions - there's a Bilstein suspension badge on the back and an STi badge on the front. Are these fake?

Also how can I tell if it's the Spec B model? I'm having trouble finding info on Google.

Anything to watch out for with this model?

    Cheers! :)

Spec B are all manual and have the 18" 10 spokes, I haven't seen one around the 3.0r's are far more common.

My 04 3.0R has Bilsteins, afaik all the Jap spec ones have them, if they are yellow? usually the best sign. Very nice cars, I love mine, yeah the torque from the H6 is great.

Downsides? gearbox is a little average, and can have a mind of its own at times, and they do drink a fair bit of gas around town. balances out with pretty good highway mileage though. Make sure you get an 04+ as they have the variable timing etc AVCS? head.

Its been said on here from guys in the know that they can be prone to drinking oil, mine doesn't and think its hit and miss but perhaps someone knows how to check for this problem apart from driving it for a month?

Oh, and if you care about sounds, either find one that has been converted to an after market headunit already, or a fully working McIntosh unit as converting the dash to double/single din isn't cheap.

  7. I think you get what you pay for mate, may sound OK but there will be a trade off somewhere and its likely to be in the quality of the stainless and baffles etc. They won't sound good or last for long. I have found Remus to make a really nice tone used on Porsche flat 6's etc, and their basic mufflers weren't too bad prices when I bought one for my old Honda a while back

have to agree with that, never been impressed with Sony even the 'higher end' stuff, would take Alpine any day.

    /quote]

A year ago I would have said the same but their new stuff will blow you away. Rapid radio are recommending them to most people and those guys know their sh#$.

interesting, what models do they rate? I have the Alpine X305s and haven't seen anything from Sony or any other brands that comes close to it for functionality and (with the Imprint add-on) sound quality, but I'm always keen to see the latest and greatest.

  9. I bought a new 10" JBL 1014 a couple of months ago, recommended it from www.DIYMA.com. Awesome sub for the money, I'd say the best value out there at the moment, very well built and works really well with moderate power (150-170rms) but will crank on 300+ if required. Very tight and punchy but can go plenty low too, all in a nice compact .75 cube box. only $119 delivered from Parallel imported.

take the chrome off and paint it black looks much nicer

yeah either that, or what I did as I hate the chrome look, with a high quality, exterior rated, preferably black 'carbon look' adhesive film. Id recommend fully dissasembling grill before attempting though.

Cant go wrong with something like this if you are wanting cheap, Pioneer are usually pretty solid,

    url]http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-stereos/cd-players/pioneer/auction-404116727.htm[/url]

I wouldn't buy a second hand head unit personally, unless you are talking top end gear.

The 6350sd or 8350sd are better units. Looking on trademe the 6350sd can be had for $259 - a good buy. I got mine just under $300.

OK, I only had a quick look, if thats the case and you can stretch to the above its all gravy. But the OP did say he wanted to spend well below $300.

If you decide to step things up a notch on a budget, I recently upgraded my whole system. I have a 12" Kenwood sub boxed (uncarpeted) with another 12" custom box to fit a BP wagon under floor (if required) 50w rms x 4 Kenwood amp, and some near new Pioneer 6x9's. Could sell the lot for $250 ono? all pretty decent gear in good nik. None of it been advertised on Tardme yet, but if anyone is keen, I'm up for bypassing selling fees.

Next plan is to hit up strongforsubaru.co.nz or similar for an OEM clock and DIN pocket to replace the aftermarket non-functioning nav. If anyone has any alternative recommendations - let me know :)

good luck finding one of those mate for under several hundred dollars, I got quoted $400 from one of the places in Auckland Waiuku I think? ($200 for just the clock unit!) they said they are the biggest selling item from dealers wanting to do the same thing.

But then if you do manage to find them for reasonable money, please let me know

  13. I went through the same dilemma just a few months ago, had my heart set on a 2004+ Spec B turbo wagon, really liked the way they drive and go, but after summing up all the pluses minuses I thought the best chance of getting a nice reliable cruiser (which is what you mostly use it for anyway imho) that shouldn't give too much mechanical dramas for years, was to go with the 3.0r, and I'm so glad I did, The only bonus I can see for the turbo is a small acceleration advantage, but the 3.0 is certainly no slouch, and the torque is brilliant for everyday driving. Fairly thirsty around town, but you have to expect that from a large car with large engine, but easily makes up for it when you get on the highway as i easily get over 10km+ per L not even trying.

And oh yeah as above make sure it has the yellow Bilstein shocks they make a really good handling wagon, into a brilliant sporty one. (be sure to check out the service costs on a turbo around 100kms too, it was one of the deciding factors for me)
