  1. Complete change of tack, just been talking to Peter at Broomfish Motorsport where I got my Simota, and he has Wix filters for $11.50 thes rate pretty well from what ive researched so far. Also seems to have the correct bypass valve pressure. http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=57712 Here is an interesting find as well, dude diseccted almost every known brand. http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/reference.html
  2. Based on that I should just use the Rycos then, ive used them on all my performance cars for the last 15 years (every 8000 kms with Valvoline VR1 SemiSyn) Mazda Cosmo 12a - 70,000 kms (modded) Toyota MR2 AW11SC - 80,000 kms (stock) Toyota MR2 SW20 GT - 110,000 kms (highly modded)
  3. Yeah Broomfish. I washed my MR2 pod in simple green and used K&N oil every 5000 kms for like 3 years. Intake was dry as a bone inside. Put down 185 rwkw on stock ct20b running 18psi using that intake.
  4. I see Simota do a drop in filter that can be run dry or oiled. - stainless mesh - non woven material - blue worth an extra 10HP Had good results with my simota pod filter for many years on MR2, which also ran an AFM. $43 for filter + $35 for cleaning \ oil kit + $8 delivery = < K&N or AEM Dryflow.
  5. K&N tested 350 of their customer ones where dealers were not honouring warrenty due to running the K&N, majority were internal circuit failure not attributed to oil, no traces of oil could be found on them either. Im still not 100% out on the K&N yet, if they can pump 1000cfm through a over oiled K&N and not get a drop I fail to see how a VF38 flowing 400cfm max can suck through oil. I wonder if the failed ones with oil were people skimping and using non genuine K&N oil which is a waxy type vs thin minieral oil. http://www.knfilters.com/maf/massairfindings.htm
  6. Is the Subaru MAF different to other MAFs that make them more susceptible to any minute amount of filter oil getting through ? Not saying there havent been horror stories but are they proven to be attributed to K&N filters and oil ? or oiled filters of other brands, or different brand filter oils ? My MR2 was MAF sensored for a good 4 years of its life running K&N oiled filters and never had an issue.
  7. K&N seem to have a different take on the whole oil issue and undertook their own testing with an overoiled filter flowing 1000cfm for 12 minutes (ie alot of flow), zero oil contamination. Seems the whole dry filter thing is piggyback on the myth of MAF failure due to oiled K&Ns, or perhaps less superior filters. So mabey K&N is actually the better option , if I can find one for under $100 33-2304 model for ours.
  8. dont K&N panel filters require oil ?? Looking at an AEM Dry Flow for $103NZ delievered, washable, no oil required, filters to 1 micron and exceeds OEM flow, would use a K&N again except for the oil issue. I figure since freeing up the exhaust system the OEM filter could use a little freeing up as well.
  9. Looking into options - OEM - Dry drop in (AEM Dry Flo, Cosworth, Blitz SUS Power) - Dry pod with cold air box. Worth it for stage 2 upgrades + reflash ? Also how often do you guys replace ? previous cars ive done every 8,000 kms with the oil, which for me will be annually. (dont travel much).
  10. Wayne Hill Cars Auckland is the North Island Deal. Guy in our MR2 has been using Amsoil products for years, oil and filters, swears by them. Reading around they get good reviews in Australia and USA also. Lots of tests to back up their quality claims as well.
  11. Amsoil it is then, micron rating lower than cellouse based OEM filter media, and flow rate greater.
  12. http://www.roki.co.jp/english/products/oilcenter_e.html Would seem that Turbo Subaru oil filters are made by Roki Japan.
  13. Nah was still going to stick with a 10,000 service interval, but was hoping the benefit of higher flowing and finer filtration would help. Apprently LegacyGT.com disected a heap of fitler and another brand Puralator came out on top over the Subaru OEM. The way I see it Subaru manufacture parts to the lowest bidder becuase they are not just a filter seller, once they sell you a car thats it they have got their money. Where as companies that rely on quality parts as part of their brand have higher quality products.
  14. anyone used these and reccomend them over OEM or Ryco ?? $46 each but they are made using some nano fiber tech, which means finer filtration, hold more contaminants, maintain higher flow. Service interval of 20,000 kms. Thinking with all the talk of VF38 failure may be good idea to run this to be sure nothing gets to turbo oil feed with its filter removed.
  15. I like both But am happy with the near stock sound I have now, dont think a catback makes much difference in power after the downpipe, not for stage 1 and 2 mods anyway. Mabey when I get some spare $$$ will do the rear ones.
  16. Did they all have turbo timers ? I wonder how many non turbo timer turbos fail vs timered ones ??
  17. What was your mesh filter in the banjo bolt like ? blocked ? what was the service history of the car ? Helpful info for others with VF38. Im picking with a non VF38 youre still going to be in for an ECU reflash, thats $800-900 right there on top of the turbo price. Then if you need different oil and water lines, flanges etc. Mabey the $1400 isnt so bad ? Have you looked for rebuild kits ? or called Chris at Alltech ?
  18. Will do, ill get some in car, idle and drive by footage. Legal drive by that is
  19. May have jumped the gun, I must admit I made that post based on the exhaust guy saying it didnt make much difference. My drive home a completely different story, its taken most of that hollow rasp off the whole rev range, its way more like stock now except with more induction \ whoosh audible when the turbo goes. The AdrenalinR 350mm resonator has done a superb job, for $189 + $80 to replace the factory resonator its well worth it.
  20. Update : new resonator installed, not much difference, looks like the rear cans are responsible for the majority of the sound, not really rated for the higher flow. Gonna have to get my AdrenalinR cans
  21. Ditto here, but sound is all part of enjoying the ride, and its also personal preference, and depth of wallet, I like a deep sporty sound vs the hollow sound it is currently.
  22. Thats my car in the vid Im not overly enthused about the sound, at normal rpm its not that bad, but yeah im getting new resonator fitted tomorrow to see its effect, and then possibly new rear mufflers.
  23. If youre interested in my old 1999 B4, I might be able to convince the new owner to sell, owes him $5500. Known service history since 64,000 kms, gearbox recently replaced, interior real good, full nurspec system. Titronic though.
