  1. Plan is to stealth them somehow when I have them setup how I want

Back window will be a lot easier than the front

Good thing about phones is all the aftermarket cases that still have slots for the camera, USB etc - should be able to mod one of those so people don\'t notice it/or wont know what it is

Biggest issue will be power, I am looking into USB power in cars atm

  2. Hey people as some of you may remember I have been looking into dashcams for some time, which was bought on by one of my mates having to pay her excess to get her car fixed after getting hit because of a lying prick, the insurance company being s*** and the cops being too busy to come out.

It struck me when I first looked into it that my excess is nearly $1000 (even though my yearly payments are reasonable at $860) and that potentially having to pay this because some retard can\'t own up for their s*** driving would suck.

Anyway I looked into all the commercial options available, both from \'reputable\' manufacturers and cheap Chinese ones and discovered there are some very reasonably priced Chinese ones that do almost everything the expensive ones do with similar quality - but I can get tighter than that.

I realized that if I used a cellphone I would get GPS, WIFI, decent storage space and a big screen for very little if there was software that could help.

Enter the $40 Samsung Galaxy S1 with a porked battery I picked up a year or so ago, which I promptly replaced for very little, and a couple of free android applications to test. 720p h264 here I come

    DailyRoads Voyager - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dailyroads.v&hl=en

    AutoGuard Blackbox - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en1

Both of these apps are compatible with Android 2.1 right the way through to Android 4.1 (maybe earlier too, but it covers all my android devices)

Dailyroads has a much better interface for how you are likely to use it imo and a vast range of options but the number of clips it will record before rewriting over the oldest is oddly short, I am seeing what can be done about this at the moment.

Autoguard seems to work well too though and I will make a write up of these apps and the other ones on the market (most of which are rated lower hence me starting with these two) when I have done more testing.

Both of these apps support GPS too so you can include both time, speed and GPS coordinates with your videos.

For now I need to sort out power and a mount that doesn\'t have such a wide base (obscuring a little vision) but when its done I will post pics etc - so far its worked much better than expected.

The beauty of this setup is that makes my other plan for a dashcam setup simple - I want it so when I park my car at home the device would connect to my wifi and any new videos recorded while I was out would be transferred to my server inside, with android this is going to be a 2 minute job to setup.

A little pedantic I know but this way I never have to think about removing the device to get stuff off it (and thus can make the installation a little more permanent too) and so I can keep a decent history, would be nice to think if a major crime was committed and I had happened to be in the area, that I could provide a video with number plates of vehicles and/or people in the area at the time if I am already going to this effort.

Not to mention the muppets I am going to catch on camera being terrible drivers, could be some awesome youtube compilations out of this.

But yeah as above I will post some pics and a full write up when I have things as I want it, if this goes well I will be on the lookout for a second cheap phone to set up in the back window too.

  3. I\'ve just watched a whole bunch of videos on the net about it (plenty of non dipyourcar.com ones too given they obviously apply it all in a professional setting) and it seems bloody good, almost too good to be true.

Can anyone recommend a little machine to spray it on? Like a spray system you can get cheaply?

I have been meaning to buy a large air compressor for ages but they are bothering expensive so I haven\'t been able to justify it up until now.

If the pricing is right I am going to pick up some white and gloss finish, and paint the hood of my Skyline with it to see how it comes up, if its good I will do the entire thing.

Whats interesting about that V7 video is that he did the whole thing half parked in a gravel trap - nearly spat my drink out!

  4. I can get a 720p at the front and 480 at the rear setup in for under $200 so it seems worthwhile - my insurance excess is $950 due to me being under 25 so its little outlay for a higher chance of a conviction.

I may look at a custom setup when I go to do my car pc project at some stage though, setting it up to constantly backup to my main server inside when my car is within range wouldn\'t be too hard and the tdp on hardware is coming down at a crazy rate so with a larger battery its something I could leave on stand by constantly, triggered by motion detection etc

Would be a cool project if nothing else

Looking at the wear on that tire, is it worth repairing ? looks to be pretty "screwed" to me :)

    /quote]

    bloody subaru drivers ehhhhhh

that tyre looks brand new to me - nissan drivers dont think tyres are bothered untill the wires are hangin out and sparking down the road

    Quoted for truth rofl

When I was doing tyres I was still using my Skyline as a daily which meant thrash tyres every week it was bothering heaven. Then back to steel hanging out when I left -_-

Also meant I had free time every day when we didn\'t have customers so I always without fail pulled my rims off, polished the shit out of them (doing it daily means its easy) and blacked the fuck out of the tyres.

Every day cruising along Maunganui rd in the 5pm traffic in this rangi as fuck 2 dr r33 with the tidiest rims and wet as tyres used to get me the most fucked up looks : D

As for the sidewall its more than repairable, some shops just don\'t like doing them that close in case you go back and get antsy about it if it fails (especially when a lot of places do free puncture repairs).

I always used to do them that close but with the warning they may not last long. Doing it for free and warning them usually means they return to buy tyres because your service is good.

  6. I could have heard wrong but iirc Shell 95 (or Z now rofl) is meant to be the best 95 available in NZ

Gutted you guys are losing 98 - hopefully it doesn\'t happen up here I have a bad habit already of forgetting to fill up before the local closes and having to drive 20kms or so shitting myself to the 24/7 BP

  7. Hey people

After my issues this week Anything Auto Electrical ripped out my old alarm system and I need a new one for insurance purposes.

Looking to pick up the cheapest 5 star alarm installed that I can, preferably within the Tauranga region.

Going cheap because it lives next to a dog at night, and its usually never parked out of my sight when I am out and about, certainly not at night.

I may end up getting an AVS 5 star installed at Hyper if nothing cheaper locally comes up as $360 installed is pretty good but if anyone knows of any other options I would like to hear them.

Are turbo timers standard fare now with 5 star alarms?

  8. So I was like shit I wish I wasn\'t a tight arse and payed the extra $30 a year for states road side assistance and towing.

Then I rung them and it seems I can add it whenever I want so the Legacys sitting at Anything Auto Eectrical awaiting some love.

    I need this tuck standard : D

  9. Will update with pics etc shortly but when I open the car doors the indicators go like you have unlocked it, but a couple of times have spazzed out and flashed a bunch of times.

The more I think about it the less sure I am that its an aftermarket alarm system so I will post pics.
