  1. hi guys,

ive noticed in alot of threads here about mods, single turbo conversions and whatever stating that "you should wait till the engine goes bang first" or "save the money for when the engine breaks." all this talk is getting me kinda worried - it sounds as if an engine blowup is inevitable? Im worried about this as if my engine did break i would be pretty screwed, and thats putting it nicely. I dont have a spare 3k or more for a engine rebuild, but i believed a blowup could be avoided by proper maintenance, hence why i change my oil religiously every 5thou.

Am i wrong here, and my engine is doomed to die? car is a 97 Rs-b, unmodified except for muffler, currently done 117xxx kms, and no problems in the past year ive owned it. As much as it would suck, id rather sell it off than face a huge repair bill i can't pay off.

just got home (dunedin) coming from chch and according to the car odometer i did 366ks with just over half tank, which means i used less than 9L per 100ks (about 8.7L/100ks)

also i wasnt driving like a nana, was going about 100-110ks/h (110-120 goin up hills) and the odd boosts to over take anyone going less than 105ks.

stock ECU, running on bp 98

WTF?! ive just about done 400 kms, and my tank is practically empty! it must have a boody hole in it or something...

  3. Ive noticed that some leggys have a different front bumper to the majority, the one with the two large rally style foglights, a larger more aggressive bottom intake and more angular styling around the driving lights. Im wondering why only some of the cars have these - it seems to be mostly late model gt-bs but i have seen an rs or two with one aswel.

Were they only brought in at the end of the production run as a facelift, or were they an option when buying the car new? My car has one of the 'common' bumpers, is it possible to retrofit one of these ones as i think they look better.

have you checked your O2 sensor is ok? As mine was unplugged for a while by mistake and was meaning I couldnt get more than 400km to a tank out of my GTB. Plugged it back in and I typically do 400km round town and 500+ on the open road.

If the O2 sensor is the little plug that goes in just down from the airbox (Yea ima tech noob) , then yea its plugged in. I do my oil/oil filter changes every 5000kms, so thats not an issue either, and tbh i dont wana pay a guy 200bux to swap my airfilter, wipe the engine bay with a rag and tell me i need to pay him extra to flush all the fluids in my engine or it will explode.. and ive got no idea how to reset an ecu. I think with a full tank, if it was able to make a change it would have done so. I honestly don't think 98 is that great - my car certainly didnt feel any faster when i used it. I don't see why gas stations think they can charge way more for 3 measly octane..

  5. My 97 rsb does this as well, but as its done it for quite awhile i think its on purpose.. if driving at high speed for a while when cruising it stiffens up, and it takes a while to reset when you slow down.. guess cars of tht age just have crappy computer chips in em. If ne1 knows the true cause, post it!

  6. True enough, yet in the 1st 2 of pages theres a couple of people with leggy's the same model series as mine, and they say they are getting 450 - 550.. i struggle to hit 400. As mines a 97, the last of the model line, and MT, i thort it would be at least as good as that. But yea I think the minor revisions that were made in the change from boxermaster 4 to boxer phase 2 in the b4 help a bit.. Bugger. As much as i like my RS, a change to a b4 myt not b a bad idea if it gets me more mileage AND a slightly improved power curve.. and a newer car to boot. Problem is finding a nice one that doesn't cost so much more that it will defeat the purpose of saving money on gas.

  7. I always reset my trip meter on fillup, and the most ive ever gotten from my legacy RS is about 430 kms, and i was well in the fuel light zone there..and that was 85buks worth of gas. :'( From what ive read in the first couple pages, people seem to be getting alot more than that, im not sure how.. :S. I only usually do town driving tho, so open road may give me a few more k's. I also run on 95RON, because its a ton cheaper most of the time, and i use those pak n' save discount vouchers, they only have 95.

I ran a tank of 98 once or twice, but i seemed to get even less mileage on it than 95. And weirdly enough, whether i drive carefully or like a bat out of hell, the mileage i get barely changes. (about 20kms less on a whole tank.)

Any ideas? Im wondering if i need to give it an engine tune, get the car checked out mechanically.... or save some coin and just upgrade to a B4 perhaps, lol.

The poor gas mileage sucks, coz i end up riding everywhere in my mates old man-ish but economical Mitsi lancer wagon.. :(

  8. Hey all,

The gearknob on my RS is looking a bit tired, and i want to get a new one - but not any of that chrome, sticker covered shite you find in repco and the like.. i want one that looks just like the stock one. Had no luck on trademe, any ideas?

Remember the Toyota/Subaru FT-86 supost to bring fun back... only problem is you have to wait for 2 years for them to put it into production

If thats what it really looks like then not bad. Just remember though, the difference between concept and reality can be huge.. according to Gt4 for example the Suzuki Swift concept had 180hp and weighed only 1 tonne.. didn't quite translate to the production model. Time will tell..

the back half o' that looks like the new ferrari california from this pic...

And having a cannon rear muff and an Exedy sticker on your stock-ish car dosen't????

Pot this is the kettle calling....

Lol, Excedy sticker was put on by previous owner... i just didnt take it off lol. :/ But how is a replacement muffler ricer? At 2.5 inch in piping it's hardly a cannon, and as stock cat. and piping before the muffler is in place its not even that loud.

It makes an improvement in the way of sound, and improves the driving experience which is why i got it, not to show off and pretend im a drag racer, which is what monster tach's are for. And it replaces the stock part - adding a monster tach is like fitting another, Bigger exhaust pipe right next to the stock one, plumbed into the same piping.. but stuck on with a plastic bracket on the side of the car.. why do it?

  11. Best place to mount a monster tach... in your trashcan. :D But if its what u want thn go for it i guess. Just make sure u tidy up the wires coz ive seen too mny ppl put them in an leave all the wires lying all over the place, looks like crap from the outside. I think just the shift light wuld b cool, but i dont know how to wire that stuff. It depends on how modded the rest of your car is too, coz a monster tach on a car stock-ish car is the no1 way to shout to everyone, IM A RICER!! 8)

Remember it could be higher due to pedestrian safety requirements..

    - ur probably right there, hate all these new bullshit regulations - why should all our cars look like s**t and be a 2 tonne rolling airbag in the name of safety?. Maybe people should learn to drive?

The main problem tho is the Japanese population is getting too old, and they don't want racy sports cars anymore, the demand's just not there in a country where the av. age is like 45. They r the ones who make the cars... and so we get a boring old man's legacy. It's sad, pretty much every 90's sportscar label from Japan has died.. just look at toyota, pre 2000 they had so many sporty cars and now what do they have... the camry sportivo? WOW. Im sticking with my older cars lol, they look better, are cheaper AND go harder 8)
