Thanks for the advice all , I have the car in with auto sparkie next week. Sound very much like the o2 sensor mentioned above - the light has not come back on.

Hi all I was driving on the motorway today and the check engine light flicked on , I pulled over to a servo on the side of the road and the light flicked off as I stopped. The car idles and drives fine , all fluids are topped up and nothing seem to be loose under the bonnet. The light flicked back on after starting back on the motorway and then off again , I stopped the car (using it for work until I get my company car tomorrow) and when I hopped in it and drove home 3 hours later the light did not come back on at all. My car is a non STI V7 with 172,000km on the clock , internally stock with just an aftermarket panel filter. So my question is , am I likely to be dealing with an electrical issue here - coil , plugs? I was intending to sell it soon so this could be a bit of a kick in the guts.
