  1. I just got back to NZ after living in Sydney for a while.

Glad to back in NZ where you can get decent cars! Anyway, today I picked up this version 5 STi - low kms (133,000) and standard apart from a 3" exhaust from down pipe back, and the OZ wheels, although it has an exedy twin plate clutch which is overkill in my opinion - has the annoying rattle that comes with a twin plate..

Has an amp under passenger seat that powers the 4 speakers.

Has a few scrapes and scratches and needs a good clean under the bonnet but will be mint with some TLC

  2. Just been out to view the car, slots from 3rd to 4th nicely if it\'s under 3000 rpm but if you drive it any harder it crunches. Doesn\'t crunch going down, or into any other gears for that matter. Owner just changed the oil with \'subaru gear oil\' (syntrax I\'m guessing) in an attempt to see if it made any changes but it hasn\'t.

Overall i don\'t think I\'ll get the car, gearbox aside - it didn\'t hit the boost that it should (only 0.9 bar) even though the factory boost control seemed to plumbed correctly, also the rear shocks were knocking.

Just buy a second hand box for a few hundy and get one of the locals to help you change it

Hell if its just a graunch 3rd to 4th it may be as simple as needing an oil flush & change or a DIY re-bedding

Yeah that would be ideal, any CHCH locals up for a cashy? I\'ve never done a manual box, only an auto.

Anyway, I\'m going to look at the car tonight (just arrived back in NZ last night), so far I\'m only going off what the owner is telling me. Are there any tell tale signs that would isolate the synchro as the culprit? as opposed to simply needing a flush

    could you say,

    Very Punny ;)

Just got a quote from Crowesport - $2-3 k to replace synchro, or a similar price to fit a second hand box... seems pretty steep?

Seems you can pick up a second hand box for arpund $500 on TM - how much would it cost to get the box fitted? I haven\'t got anywhere to do it myself, and have no tools as I just arrived back from Aus

its not a RA. looks like a mix of bits

Actually let me get back to you on this.. sorry

..i was half way through researching this drunk, got frustrated that the russian subaru fast server is down then got called to bed lol

anyway yeah it does seem to be a ~95 WRX RA with the electrics optioned, and some other sti bits slapped on

its just that something about it bugs me. i guess i just want to look at it in person

STi high level spoiler and fog light covers - any other STi parts you can see?

Also, do you know whether this would have been fitted with the closed deck block and 5th injector? I can\'t see the injector in the pic..

It appears to be a genuine WRX RA.

WRX TYPE RA was built to comply with the Group N / Group A rules and this will be lighter than an equivalent STI RA. The engine was also a lot stronger on the pre 97 RA than the other models due to being closed deck sand cast.

    Here\'s a bit more info:

Thanks I was wondering about this, as I had read elsewhere that only the MY93 - 94 got the closed deck block.

looks like a nce car if not "genuine and un-molestered" as the seller states.

I\'d buy it, would prob start it something like 5K though

Yes I think it is worth a look, with bit of work it would be a tidy car.

Ray, how did you find it going to a non STi WRX, after previously driving an STi?

  7. Saw this on trade me; I\'m in the market for a GC8 WRX (preferably STi) but came across this. Appears to be an RA, whether the owner knows it or not..

My question is, what did the WRX RA get as opposed to the WRX of the same year?

Obviously no DCCD, or roof vent like the STi; But does it have anything special over the WRX - Lighter is my guess but not sure what else.

    Thanks!

  8. Purchased an 05 Legacy wagon for my partner but it is in Auckland; looking at transport options, does anyone on here have any inside knowledge as to a good company to use and what a fair price should be?

I did a search but the thread was a few years old so thought i\'d get some up to date opinions

    Cheers!

Maf can be dead, but still within range so no dtc.

Best option (and safest) is to replace... last thing you want is the car running super lean without the computer realising it.

    +1

Is there anyone nearby that you can swap AFM\'s with for a test drive before you fork out for a new AFM?

Bugger. To be honest I would have never picked up on that. Its so tidy and screams STI everywhere. makes it look about market value in that case?

Yeah i\'m sure it\'s a good car, i\'m just picky, it would annoy me that it\'s not a legit STi haha. Someone has gone to ALOT of effort to convert it!, STi cluster and everything. I wonder if it has the sti alloy control arms, etc

Never seen it before. Looks tidy enough tho. If youre in no hurry I will have a white 99 v5 sti sedan and a green 98 nz new wrx sedan for sale. Both mint but will come with the price tag to suit as both have had motors done.

    Details on the 1999 STi?

Yeah I arrive in Chch 1st of April so I\'m hoping he still has it so I can pop down and check it out. First thing I\'d do is put some nice V7 STi wheels on it, put factory air box on and tidy up/remove the amp cables and it would be a bloody nice car.
