  1. So a Little update on this, We did the fuel pump and what not and still having the same issue, Thinking of Changing to a 2.0L engine.

The issue, What engine (SOHC) would be a straight swap, Happy to have to do a bit of fiddling or what but ideally want something as close to plug and play as possible.

What NZ cars have a EJ203 as that seems to be a option?

Next question, Anyone got some engines laying around?

There are probably group n mounts in stock somewhere in the country

Bush kit for the shift linkage is what you need, with soild/group n mounts and a short shift you'll be in a much better place

i wouldn’t weld anything up. There are alloy spaces for the figure 8 gearbox main mount plates if you don’t like rubber.
A loose rubber even broken bushes still work, snapped welds don’t do so well bouncing around.

group N are pretty solid mounts but you can always fill the gaps up yourself. You can by filler or even cheapest option is garden hose cut and pushed in. Just run cable tie though it so it won’t fall out.

Thanks lads, Ordered on of those kits off Aliexpress and got a shortshifter from there coming as well. Car is a $200 scrap rally thrasher so might as well have some fun and do some Quality Assessment of parts. We do also have a Supercharger kit in the works to sit where the AC used to. Love beater cars and the Zero Fks fun that can be had :P :P

    Will keep you guys updated.

  3. Hey Team,

So after taking the Scrap Impreza out Rallying one of my biggest criticisms besides the lack of power (we might have figured that out)  was the Gear selector, the throws where very long, the amount of just nothingness and mud involved all round and even clicking into gear felt like custard.

So my question here, Ignoring Comfort, and all Road things, since its a pure Rally car, what can be done to tidy and clean the shifts up? I've seen the Short shifters, so will be getting one of those, I'm also thinking of welding up some Solid engine & Gearbox Mounts but happy to build what ever it needs,

What can be done besides the short shifter? And do you have pics of what you would do?

  4. Then cam this weekend, and with me competing in NZRC I really don't have a lot of my own time for fun and the car has been sitting for a long time.

But as with all good things! it finally happened! I entered the car into a round of the Central Region Sprint Series, it was a bit of a nice event for me as this road was where my entire rally career started two years previously. even found some 2nd hand rally tires!
    IMG-1190.jpg

Well the car needed some things done, the first was both front CV boots were Bluetooth, the exhaust was lacking and the Handbrake not great for Rallying, and a Aircon that was next to useless and only restricted air into the Radiator. So a big day smashing out all of the Mechanical to do's. Wasn't able to track down a new lead for Spark plug 3.
    IMG-1237.jpgIMG-1242.jpgIMG-1233.jpg

There was also the fact that the car really did not look the part, but we are also on a massive budget, but decided to do the best we ca, so we broke out the Rattle can and the vinyl I had stored away.
    IMG-1246.jpgIMG-1248.jpgIMG-1257.jpgIMG-1259.jpgIMG-1262.jpgIMG-1263.jpg

She did look the Part come Race Day, Well to me at least, Something to break up every single subaru running a 555 variation.
    IMG-1269.jpg

Honestly an amazing Day, Except for the Massive engine pulling problems.

Now this I'm really someone might know what the hell is going on, New Sparks, all leads are fine and when clutch is in, car rev's all the way, But under load there seems to be NOTHING between 2k & 4K I ended up being unable to shift into 3rd at all as the rev's would just sit and the speed slowly drop, there was a few times I got 3rd at 4K+ rpm and It pulled nicely!

Anyone heard of this before? I was worried it was just the car and 1600cc of Very old engine not able to handle the foot flat moments but seems to be starving of something under heavy load?

  5. So Two Big Updates.

First one, We got the Car out to the Hawks bay GrassKhana and Autocross event,

We did some minimal prep on the car, New battery (Tiny MotoBatt) new oil, filter and sparks. and was lucky enough to get some Gold 15" Rims for a great price.
    IMG-7345.jpgIMG-7352.jpgIMG-7396.jpgIMG-7407.jpg
An amazing day was had, although we had a big issue with Cylinder 3 Spark plug lead constantly popping off and the Cars mid range power just not being great especially when you shift to 3rd. (More on that later!

After days like that So happy it got saved from the Wreckers!

  6. So None of those Pics seems to work, Will relook at sorting it all out, Here's one that hopefully works.

So We Invested a whole $200 into a $200 Car, and well its now got New Oil, New Sparks, New Filter, and A Tiny little New Battery.

Was also able to score some sweet Rims off someone at a Rally when the person didn't pitch up to collect them. so another $100 there but they'll replace the Steelies on the car currently.

In really Fun news. The Car is going down to Hawks bay this Weekend for a Grasskhana Event. So some life left in the old Girl. Will get some Pics hopefully.

will spend Saturday giving it a once over, and Hopefully try figure out why she chokes a bit when going from idle to flooring it, like is super hesitant for a few seconds then rev's up nicely.

    The Budget Rally car continues.

This weekend, Weld in a Harness bar and the Harness plates in the floor.

Still focusing on doing the absolute bear minimum to just go out and enjoy the car.

if you do an entire WRX swap, you should probably also swap over the master cylinder too :)

finally Caught up on your Gravel express thread, So epic!

Let me know if you got any parts that would be useful you want out of your Shed :P

    Hey!
so, standard GF WRX stuff will fit if you wish to change to that. the later V4+ models have rear vented rotors which you could change to. I believe you'll need hubs etc to go along with these.
I've done the v4+ WRX upgrade to my v3 WRX, but am also considering the larger rotors from a BP/BL 3.0/GT. I believe I read it is a bolt-on upgrade once you have a disc setup.

If you want another upgrade, I have upgraded my fronts to the same BP/BL brakes, and it's a huge rotor change, requires minimum 17" wheels though.

    K3eyjTv.jpg?1

Cheers man!! Thats a lot of info there!

Might look at just a WRX swap all round not anything bigger as wnat to stick with 15" rims for Rally Tires.

I guess I'll keep a look eye for a Wrecking V4 and try get the whole rear hubs with brakes.

Anything else I would need to change when doing the conversion to keep the braking force balanced?

  10. Morning Team,

Finally crawled under the GF wagon and did see the rears were drum discs,

What are the Brake upgrades available on the GF's I'm assuming the STi stuff would be worth a fair bit, but how much effort would it be for me to throw on WRX front and rears?

    Anyone done this before?

  11. Figured I should start a proper thread on this for entertainment/Education.

So Background, I have competed in a few different motorsports and currently loving the Lemons (Now Nazcar) series. I've got my own team and Car we Race in it, But knowing how amazing it is I wanted to get friends involved and the Perfect car popped up for it. As I'm sure you guessed its a GF wagon, Factory Manual, AWD 1.5L Engine. Interior is in amazing condition while the exterior is what you expect, Also someone threw a rock through the rear window so thats on the Parts replacment list

It was used as a paddock car as due to some chassis crease it can't pass a WOF, I've had a look underneath and the thing drives damn well. and at the price it was offered for its become the perfect car for my Friends to learn a lot more on cars but also gave a go at Racing!

Pics from the day I collected it.

    130227399_2882009128791288_462146453758256154_n.jpg

So Hopefully work begins this weekend stripping it out and getting it ready for the Cage and other bits, We are going to be keeping everything as stock as possible But will look at upgrades like brake calipers, Radiators and hell even a bigger engine if its Cheap enough and just Bolts right in as the whole point of this is reliability and Fun.

EJ25 block with EJ22 heads and EJ18 cams, one of the best N/A frankenstein combos you can get :)
I was also told that the Ej20/22/25 ECUs can all cope with that combo too, as I was looking to do it to my old 2.2 Legacy for club sport stuff.

Well damn That does sound like a pretty power combo. I wasn't looking at building a motor but that could be a good path to follow.

Might just go for the Drop in option for now and begin building that in the background. Unfortunately I do have a few other race cars that also require some budget

    2.2?

Cheers man, Yeah was looking like that could be the option as most of that engine is pretty basic so hopefully wouldn't even need the ecu as doubt there is much difference when its so mechanical. Just hard to find info everyone seems to want to swap in the big turbo motors

Any suggestions on a good place to find a EJ22?

Wont you need to leave the EJ16 in for Lemons?

funnily enough there is no rule against it, only that the car must cost less then $999 and I got the car for $200. so got some budget for a engine swap.

  15. Hey guys,

Damn its been long and I really need to do an update on my Focus build, but have been flat out with Rally and Endurance racing.

Annnyyyyways. Today I bought a GF Wagon, manual, Awd with the EJ16 engine in it. Now I'm going to be stripping it out (A bit of a waste as the interior is mint) and throwing in a cage for some Lemons and or Rally Driving.

What I wanted to find out, What would be the simplest engine swap I could do on these, its a pure track car so Cert and all that not an issue, but as its going to be a Lemons car, budget is tight. I saw from looking at the EJ Engines that the EJ203 looks like a possible option. But also as its an endurance car what engine that could work would be the best fit. Will def be staying NA.

Also yeah if any other info on these, i really know nothing on the older Models or even the new models and getting working on them.

  16. I'm not expert on if this could be an issue with the engine somewhere but to me, it sounds like someones played around with the software to get things like auto blep and flat foot shifting but did a weird version of it.

but I could also be way way off.

Dare I throw another competitor in the ring but Toyo T1 Sport has been very good for the $$ for me.

Devil's advocate: put Zetum ZU37's on your daily rims then some proper tyres on your track rims :D

ooohh I can top that, I've been Running HiFly tires, and so far they have done 2 Super lap events, and daily driving in between and they have been fantastic, I mean they are no PS4's and my lap times suffer heavily on them BUT for a daily tire at around $70 for 18" I honestly cannot complain and will continue to run them as dailies and if you on a tight budget and want to do a chrome/powercruise they'll work as long as you under 250bhp. Don't think they'll handle anything above that.

I'm also looking at the Nexen tires for next season on a second set of rims

I should of worded that differently I have had so many conflicting opinions, the tyre shop i was talking to gave me a quote on RE003's for $1,147.00 fitted. he said that the PS4 performed like a full street tyre compared to the RE003 (this was bridgestone that said this)

I then spoke with Beaurepaires and they told me that the PS4 was the best street performance tyre out at the moment and they can do them for $1,211.00 fitted. They said that the PS4 was a whole lot better than the RE003.

So I am more confused as to what one to go for, I do want a tyre I can drive on the street and the track. more referring to them as a street tyre compared to a full semi slick.

They are not wrong.. kinda. Yes they both Street tires, but that said.. Ferraris and lambos come with street tires so nothing negative there.

All the hot hatch guys also highly rate the PS's above the RE's personally having used the PS3's on the track they were amazing.

If however you want to go a step beyond thats where things like the Toyo 888 and some of the Zestio's come into their own, they road legal and give crazy grip on the track but think they suffer somewhat in the wet so will have to think if they are for you.

Check out May issue ‘MOTOR’ car mag for 11 x tyre test.Includes Nitto Invo but no Bridgestone or Michelin’s.

Then its not really a good test at all, I mean the RE003 and Pilot sports are prob the best-rated tires out there from the Hot Hatch guys. I can speak volumes for the PS3's they were amazing on the track.

  20. You will be good with getting a wof as long as the car has a cert as well as an MSNZ logbook, that'll allow things like buckets and Roll cages.

this is all stuff I've heard from other guys, can always call up a wof place and chat to them but it is possible.
