1. Got some inspiration from batbaruman and gave my wagon a good buff. I just used a drill, an old sponge, rag and a bolt with a bit on the end. Worked very well and cost $0.

Started with SCA liquid wax, then autohaus compound. Then used turtle wax color correct blue.

Cleaned up the interior also, took a lot longer then expected to be honest.

But it is 10x better then it was when I bought it.

Used the alloy wheel cleaner also. e37e203dcdf0aba356e7b00ccc8b6216.jpg6eb1f73b088a8cfbe5ae55ed7ba725cc.jpg

Nice work bro, I too took a car selfie haha let’s set a new trend

Just use rainx on the lights the solvent eats the plastic and clears the yellow.

Also any rough cleaning removes the UV protection coating and they yellow up real fast. So buy the new clear coat for them.

Plus don’t polish with anything high speed as if you heat it too much the plastic it gets bubbly and you end up buying new lights.

yeh my dad fixed the yellow problem.. he thought he was helping me while car was parked away during my surgery. i get back home for a 'nice' surprise, lights no longer yellow.. instead they're full of micro scratches cos he used autosol metal polish (the thicker paste version) and steel wool on the plastic headlights.. very abrasive. that day i did not need pain killer as the shock completely numbed me :D clear but so many deep scratches!

i've since improved on the scratches but eventually my next moves on the lights will likely need to be 2000, then 3000 wet sanding followed by some polishing action and then some clear coat that's suitable for plastic (not sure where is best to get that from). for now they're near perfect from 1metre away  but any closer and they look gross.

the story behind why i originally started crazily detailing my own cars from long back is also related to fixing random 'helpful' things my dad would do to my cars way back, i guess that's his way of teaching me lol.

3. Better bump this up since Batbaruman has made me feel bad about my car care efforts in recent times.

Do you guys with corded random orbital polishers find the lead gets in the way much?

Figure i’ll probably be more inclined to sort mine out if I get a tool to do more of the hard work for me.

I see Makita has released an 18v one recently which will probably be super expensive but runs the same batteries as the rest of my tools so the battery running flat isn't an issue and the general quality is typically top notch.

https://www.makita.co.nz/products/model/DPO600

Personally nope , I learnt off YouTube tutorials this way to loop cord around myself so it doesn’t damage the paint. If you had a few spare batteries around then seems cordless one would be even better provided it isn’t weak / battery doesn’t get flat too quickly

Bonus tip (learned the hard way few years ago) - is you’re not particularly vertically gifted you may find your clothes would touch body of car when you’re reaching to scrub top of it. A) lower your car (considering it) and b) make sure you’re not wearings stuff that could scratch car like hoodie with metal zips , pants zips, belt buckles/ Burton’s etc

Can someone please recommend what are some good backing plate sizes to have on hand and some pads? The SCA ones I’m sure won’t cut it for when I wanna do some compound work , just barely good enough for polishing. I’d like something that I can attach to have a food go at headlights later, right now I’m only 70% happy with them

4. Y’all should feel really bad aye

Speaking is detailing product specials though

Meguiars clay bar / derailed spray kit $28 at repco, I saved the spray for later and just use bucket of gold class wash & wax for the lubricant

Meguiars towel magnet $20. was 40% off at repco too, single towel to dry the whole car much preferred it over previous synthetic $5 thing I used as that product left micro scratches and needed frequent wringing out

Meguiars gold class wash and wax 1.9L $25 at supercheap , it’s my go to product for once car has been waxed as cleans car, has some agents for hard water so less risk of water spots and doesn’t strip wax.

Meguiars ultimate polish $32 at supercheap , ultimate compound on sale at same price might grab some myself for next time

Saw rainx products were on sale at mitre 10 grab some if you haven’t tried and been curious, the windshield wax spray will last you forever and has practical benefits

Rockwell / SCA branded dual action random orbits polisher with 1 foam pad for $109 at supercheap . Bunch of 7” /180mm pads on special too

5. Took a short break from long detailing process on my car to do a diy pod filter install in my mates 1.2L turbo Polo. Used old Simota filter I had lying around as he’s been wanting to fit one and all kits made for his car were like $300 . $10 elbow joint from mitre 10 and silicone joiner, super quick job. That thing responds so much better now and actually sounds deeper on the exhaust tone. Mate is happy as, he’s gonna paint the pvc pipe black and enjoy.

I actually find that Mothers Chrome Polish works an absolute charm for me. On the outside at least.
Put a couple of coats on my Legacy windscreen ages ago (like, over a year), and the rain still beads up nicely!

Ooh whenever this stuff runs out (lasted forever so far) May give some normal Meguiars was a go then. Love this combo as has served me well through the tough years with v7 sti which didn’t have AC, especially the interior anti fog rainx . Not sure about using polish agents with abrasives on modern windshields though? I heard modern glass is softer and can have micro scratches , would just stick to alcohol pad cleaning + wax coats on the safe side , crystal clear as is

7. Currently on a bus heading to Christchurch to pick up the new wagon.

Friggin exciting !

Didn’t wash mine but done lot of smaller detailing stuff on hinges / door jam areas, those corners by wipers and all etc. gonna run wax in those areas maybe later tonight then move on to main body detailing later on.

anyone know cheapest place to get clay bars?

Headlights aren’t perfect but better than before. Not sure I wanna proceed to sand them down until I figure out the best sealant . So far just light polish with scratch swirl remover , headlight doc, finish with couple coats of meguiars gold class (carnauba based so won’t last very long)

Treated windshield ahead of rainy season with this stuff

... and sold the skyline last night , Will actually miss it somewhat, that quick comfort and all. New owner is stoked as though , I know he’ll enjoy it

Asked in my thread but maybe someone knows here about this... missing bolt from my rear wing. Doesn’t seem to have thread so can’t just chuck bolt in. Anyone happen to know what parts I should order or where I can get from please? Assuming there is some plate with thread to slide in to spoiler then can bolt down. Thanks

8. If it gets hit with tax it will be at customs in NZ you wont know if it gets picked up until it gets here. they will email / call you before releasing it from customs.

Let me know if you get taxed or not as I am keen to get one also

Just heads up that it can be pretty random with customs. Both of u may make same order arrive same time at customs and one of u get taxed other one doesn’t

9. Does the HDI kit come with a flange welded onto the pipe for BOV? I am unsure how much tax would be . it may only work out to be 100-200 which wouldn't be too bad. or maybe talk to a company like North shore Toyota and see if they can get it into NZ at a better price.

Yep stock fit flange for bov is already included, don’t remember there being a gasket but my bov bolted right on

10. The HDI kits look like a good option Batbaruman was running one on his V7 and it did well. I think they are the better of the 'cheaper kits'

A person in Wellington is working with a tuning shop as mentioned above is doing a FMIC comparison shortly so will be great to see if the cheaper ones work just as effectively. The only issue with the HDI kits now is you have to get them from AUS and may get stung with tax

Sucks that it gets stung with tax now. Going custom on a good locally made core is an option still from fabrication shops and can get nice looking piping too. To answer your question about the HdI kit, it was pretty awesome. Very efficient and I did have pics somewhere in my garage thread about shining super bright light through it comparing against some other core to confirm it’s not just some S*** design (though my IAT logged before and after confirms this with real data) . My turbo was spinning out of efficiency range and basically blowing hot air so for the IAT to come down from ambient +20-30 range to ambient +3-10c range the hdi FmIC had proven it’s worth to me

thanks for all the response much appreciated

here ya go. cold start on the car. hks exhaust, pbms downpipe, hks intake (tho not sure if that makes change to this cold start idle sound).

haven't yet figured out a nice way to mount camera in there (mounted on the roof scoop bare metal thing in old car) for cool in car POV driving recording, so for now a brief description : after it's warmed up it's a really nice sound, cold starts can be a bit loud (but i do think its kinda cool). once warmed up , cruising around at normal speeds in I or S, you know it's there but it's not over powering anything. in s# with the change in map (might just be cos mines tuned as haven't driven in this configuration while stock), you're pretty much always under boost so it's a bit louder but still not annoyingly loud. turns heads, but still sounds nice in car. i found myself turning down the music and driving a gear lower than usual just cos i loved the sound that much lol. not droney at any point at all regardless of mode/throttle position so that's an added bonus.
