Could just be the belt slipping, try tensioning the pulley if you haven't already, check the belt isn't fraying around the edges etc etc.

P/S pumps can be rebuilt but obviously depends whats wrong with them. Can get quite expensive quite quickly though from my experience.

awesome, will give that a go and see if it improves the situation. thanks

  2. Hi guys,

My power steering pump is screeching quite badly on cold starts but seems to happen more likely on warm days.

So when I start the car, it immediately makes a very loud screeching noise and goes away once I get the car moving a bit/give it a bit of gas. I thought it could be the pulley but recently it started to stop working as well after the cold start for about a second when turning the wheel.

Will try and get a video, but I just tried to get some videos this morning but it decided to start up without making a noise or anything.

Anyone had the same problem before? The real question I need answered is whether I need to replace the pump completely, or can it be rebuilt/repaired whatever.

Car is 2007 Legacy BP5 turbo JDM.

    Thanks in advanced people!

What current mods have you done to the car? Any particular reason why you’d rather do this than move to a Spec B?

The swap will cost a heap more than it would to sell it and move to a Spec B. Can’t just throw in a STi 6-speed setup as it’ll ned to match the Legacy hubs which will mean custom axles and maybe driveshaft?

Even if you got an entire driveline from a wrecked Spec B it’s still a major swap. And at the end of the day it won’t be worth much more than every other standard 5-speed

It's all bolt ons really, but have spent a lot of the car already and I'm bloody attached to it... Any idea around how much I'd be looking at?

Definately need a tune. MAF scaling is different enough to cause issues without a tune.

FYI it is a bloody expensive intake and probably not worth what it costs compared to some others out there. Got mine almost new from a dude in Ireland which made it worthwhile as it was a heap cheaper than new. Around 650NZD from the Grimmspeed site before factoring in customs fees and whatnot

Is this the one you have? http://www.grimmspeed.com/grimmspeed-cold-air-intake-subaru-legacy-gt-05-09-outback-xt-05-09/

Could be down on power if its a big enough leak pre turbo. Could almost be something on the intake side too. Torn intake pipes can make some weird flappy/buzzy noises and would definately have a decent impact on performance

At first I thought it was intake too, but had a look at it, checked filter and everything and it seemed fine... Think it could be a gasket leak then... Hopefully..

Did you get the brakes sorted in the end?

I'm waiting on some brake hardware to arrive, gonna change the brake hardware and then try and clean up the brakes as much as possible and hopefully it'll make a difference... So far it still sounds like 1000 dying kittens...

    Exhaust gasket blowout somewhere.

Or just for a total random one, idler pulley bearing is about to die.

Would exhaust gasket blowout cause loss in power? I think my car lost a bit of power since it started making that noise...
Idler pulley bearing, whats the damage like on the bank usually?

  8. Was driving my car home tonight (2007 Legacy GT JDM), stopped at the lights and then took off, this weird exhaust-y noise came from the front of my car closer to engine bay, I thought it was a Honda next to me at first but then realised it car from my car. I stopped on the side and turned off the car and started it back up again, still had that noise.. A bit louder through the lower rpms, and I can't really hear my exhaust from the back (HKS hi flow exhaust).. Also feels like there's less power..

Gonna take her to the mechanic tomorrow morning, but any ideas what it could be? I checked under the hood once I got home, couldn't find anything unusual..

Mine were the same, V7  and V11 also - in reverse only. Enquired with racebrakes.co.nz and they said it's a common issue with this type of calipers (harmonic motion). Copper grease or that spay-on CRC Brake Quiet stuff help a lot. The latter actually helped to eliminated the squealing, didn't get to test it long enough as the car got written off..

Did you keep the back plate of the brake pads when you install with em? Or had them removed?

Yeah, my bad I crossed it out as I had a quick search of the pads you have. Honestly, nope. As far as I know I've got new OEM rotors roughly around 10xxx ish k's ago so never have I thought of replacing that. I've always assumed that it's normal for racing pads to be screechy which mine are. I was at a car meet a few weeks back and only parked my car for about 2 hours or so at night and after driving it was very very noisy.

Oh, did you get your rotors skimmed? Are they uneven?

Yea same here, parked for maybe an hour and reversed out and was loud as heck..

Yea I did get my rotors skimmed just last December, they should be pretty even but I'm planning on checking them tomorrow..

Are they racing pads by anychance? I've got Endless pads all around and same thing as well. Only does it on little braking but goes away after a bit of driving. Pretty sure it's normal to make that screeching sound with harder racing pads and that's with my car parked inside a closed garage.

Nah they're not racing pads, just for street application.. Yea same thing here, I park my car inside as well.. Have you looked into getting anything done about it? It's quite loud and it just doesn't sound nice at all...

  12. Hey guys,

Recently got new pads for my Subaru Legacy which has been fitted with v7 brembos.

The new pads compounds are much harder I guess compared to my old ones, as these ones (Dixcel EC) are meant to create less dust.

When I first drive the car and say reverse down my driveway, every time I brake a little bit the brakes/rotors screech like there's no tomorrow, but after I brake a few more times its gone. I've come to the conclusion that it's corrosion on my brake rotors, that's why when I don't drive it for a bit, moisture gets on my rotors and then i'll have to brake a few times to rid of the sound.

It's really annoying, especially when you have heaps of neighbours around and you leave the house before most people wake up.

Any recommendations of what I could do? Cheaper the better, so obviously new rotors that are resistant to rust/corrosion will be last resort.

    Thanks guys in advanced :)

Once is fine if it has cleared, it probably means it lost the wheel speed signal on 1 corner for a moment.

If it keeps coming back, you probably have one of:

    -Damaged ABS wheel speed sensor

-Damaged tone ring (part of the hub on these cars)

    -Faulty ABS computer

I fought my way through this list from top to bottom before resolving my ABS problems, but then again it was happening to me every time I drove the car.

    Ahh alright cool, thanks mate.

Hopefully it doesn't come back then ¬¬
