  1. I'm really not sure no but the wrong fluid is the wrong fluid. Is say if you noticed it and changed it straight away, and didn't have any filings you'll probably be OK.
  2. Awesome thanks. Anyone got any recommendations on who to go to to purchase one? Like a recommended breakers or something? Are they tealtively straightforward to swap? And can I take the newly reflashed tcu off my current box to use on a replacement? Thanks
  3. Yeah agreed. I'm going to get in touch with my mechanic and see what he says. Ironically the fluid change and the pak file have removed the 1st and 2nd gear slip and the hard change up to/down from 3rd, and replaced that with a slip!
  4. Hey Can someone tell me what the identifying code is for the 5 speed automatic transmission for a 08 LGT with tiptronic? I need to arrange the purchase of a replacement! Cheers
  5. Ok so took the car to South Canterbury Toyota for the recall work to be done and had them check the transmission. They confirmed with my regular mechanic what fluid he used and were able to confirm that it was the wrong fluid. They took the bottom plate off and showed me the insane amount of metal filings inside and on the magnet. He replaced the fluid and flashed the TCU using the pak file from Subaru and it's still doing it, he says its slipping mostly in 1-3rd gear when under a fair amount off accel. He recommended driving it easy as he said that often the glazing on the clutch disks will get better with time once the right oil is in but he's 50/50 on whether the damage is already done. So, probably for the bin really. Wish it were easy to do a manual conversion!
  6. It's a 2008. Well I check the fluids regularly and not long after buying I noticed that the fluid was dark and starting to smell burnt so my mechanic agreed that it needed changed. He had driven it and thought it was behaving like it needed changed too. He wasn't able to change the filter though so that's still to happen. But after the change it started to behave worse. If it's a slipping clutch, surely that would mean that the car would then start to slow down and over rev, like on a manual? I have the opposite, it revs up and I can feel the extra power. It's like turning off the over-drive on the old AT boxes. Incidentally I checked the oil just there, looks good and seems to have enough. Its at the bottom "cold" dot.
  7. No I get more revs. If you were to drive the car having never driven it, you would likely think it had down shifted.
  8. I did wonder about the fluid, but I suppose to find out I will need to change the fluid. Is it Dextron 3 for these cars? I don't get any warning lights no, otherwise everything seems ok. There is a strange noise coming from the car, which I cant isolate. It appears to only be there when I am in drive and accelerating, it sounds a bit like a dry drive belt bearing or something. It reduces as I decelerate. So perhaps these are actually linked?
  9. Well, yes and no. So, if going up hill for instance in 5th gear, the revs start to drop off (as they should) then suddently I get about 500 more rpm. It's instantaneous, its like someone flicks a switch. I get a little more power then eventually the car will either gear down or settle back.
  10. Hello, I have an issue, as such, with my 5sp AT. I had the fluid changed in March and since then I have this weird thing happening, mostly between 4 and 5 and past 5 where the car seems tof ind an extra 500rpm. The weird thing is, I get more power from it, when it happens (mostly going uphill) I start going faster. My understanding of slipping is that you get more rpm but no increase in power (like a clutch in a manual that's buggered). So I am not sure what this could be. It was only after the fluid was changed that I noticed it (the fluid wasnt flushed). Any ideas? Thanks.
  11. Hello, I thought i would ask here before I take my car to the dealer in Timaru. I have been having issues with my 5spd AT, its out an 08 Legacy GT, 2.0, SI drive etc etc. Car has done more than 200k kms. So I noticed hard shifting up and down between 2 and 3 and hesitation in shifting from certain gears at certain times. Also seemed like changing from 2nd to 3rd resulted in far too few revs if you know what I mean, like the ratio was different from the rest. I took it to my mechanic who changed the fluid, but wasnt able to change the filter as he couldnt get the part. No flushing either. This seemed to fix the issue a wee bit for a while but the problem has returned and more. Now the box seems to change gear at random points, always seems to be in a rush to get to 5th. Throttle response is terrible, there is a delay from foot to engine of roughly a second or 2. Also, this weird thing where the car seems to change down half a gear when i am driving in manual or in 5th in Auto. That sounds weird, but say i am in 5th going up a hill, in manual, the car seems to change down half a gear to find more power but doesnt actually change gear, its still in 5th. Is that normal? It doesnt feel like a slip, more of a deliberate shift down. Oh and another thing, if i drive in manual and drive a bit harder, it changes gear anyway by itself. Would love to know if anyone has input or suggestions, I will be taking it to Timaru dealer for its recall soon enough and will have them look at it but I have a suspicion that the box is on it's way out. Cheers!!
  12. Hello, I have been having a bit of trouble with my AT in that it selects gears at weird times, hard shifts between 2nd and 3rd amongst other problems, and I found on this forum that Subaru released a Pak file to fix some of these issues and force the box to relearn shifts. I also saw that this must be done by a main dealer and a few people had success with getting it done in Chch. I live 4hrs away from Chch but there is a dealer in Timaru. I called them about it but they said 'it would only be available if it was on our computer', but the post said that they need to specifically request this from Subaru using my engine code. Has anyone had any interaction with the Timaru branch? How do I demand that they go get this file when they (rightly so) assume they know best? Thanks.
  13. Oft my thread did get a tad hijacked there! Basically I want to know what my turbo is, if it's twinscroll etc. If mine has the bilstein shocks, factory rated bhp etc. I'm completely new to Subarus so I'm keen to find out. At some point I'm going to make the decision whether or not to ship my car back to the UK so I'm trying to find an equivalent in the UK to see if it's possible to get a similar/better one at home if you get me. I love this car! Cheers.
  14. Hey, I bought a 2008 Legacy a few months ago, and I'd like to know exactly what model I have, ie is it GT, SPEC.B etc etc. How do I find out this info? I know it's a 2.0 turbo obv, fully optioned with SI drive, keyless, paddles etc. It's a wagon so I know it's a BP. Cheers.
  15. Sweet Cheers. How do I go about checking that the 4 pin is there? If it's not can I get that part off another car?
  16. I am aware that there is a thread dedicated to this however I haven't really been able to glean the answer I need. I have an 08 Legacy wagon turbo, auto, keyless, si drive etc. It annoys the life outta me not having cc so I want to fit it. From what I can see I simply need the steering wheel buttons and plate, fit that and a 4 pin brake switch and I should be good to go. Can anyone confirm if this is the case? Cheers.
  17. Hello all, A few months ago I put a post up about my Imp that has been having a small bit of engine trouble. Initially I thought the engine was bouncing or something and the advice i received was to check the mounts but they check out ok. The car is a GG wagon, 2.0 non-turbo manual with 205k on the clock. The problem I have is at 2500 revs or less, the engine doesn't perform well. It feels like it is struggling to get power and it causes the entire car to sort of lurch along a bit until I climb out to from 2500 to 3000 revs where there is absolutely no problem with the power what so ever, it pulls like a train. Doesnt matter what gear I am in, if I go up a hill and the revs drop below 2800ish I need to change down to get the power back. I'm having a bit of trouble with the clutch as the gears are sticky and I often need to double clutch to get reverse. Could the problem be the clutch or does it sound more like a mis-fire? Another problem I have, which may or not be linked, is a vibration that starts at 3000 revs. I can feel it through the pedals, steering wheel and the gear stick, it's worse on deceleration. It's not overly loud, my girlfriend cant hear it in the passenger seat (albeit, she wouldn't know the difference anyway, she cant drive) but I can hear it plainly. It's a fairly high frequency vibration, as if something was rubbing on a tyre or something (it's not). I've often wondered if it's the input bearing. Timing belt was supposedly replaced at 160k. Any seasoned pros got some ideas on where I should start? Other than a squeaky drive belt, I dont have any other problems with the engine, that I can tell and no check lights. Cheers, Ross.
  18. Hello, I have a 2000 impreza GG3 2.0 non turbo. I'm currently wondering what the general fuel consumption per 100km should be on a car this age and engine? My fuel guage isn't working all that well so I've been calculating by filling right up and currently I have worked out I am using 13.5l per 100km... to me that seems excessive? Cheers
  19. I've just checked my gearbox oil and it's low....on the lower side of low. Would this account for the highway vibration I'm feeling I wonder? Certainly explains why it can be difficult to get it into gear.
  20. Was my original thought but there are no other indications of a misfire - no engine lights, no hesitations, no loss of power etc. Surely as a minimum I should be expecting a check engine light?
  21. It's both. The car has a strange shudder between 2 and 2.5k revs, then at 3k it's a vibration, the shudder is gone. I've just looked at the pitch mount, it actually looks fairly new (I bought the car in the last month), I'm not sure how much play it should have? I should also say that this is my first Subaru, are there any characteristics of the H shaped engine that perhaps I'm confusing this for? It's nothing carastrophic and it's only now that I've been driving it for a bit that I'm beginning to notice it. But with these things I would rather nip it in the bud, so to speak.
  22. I'll look into that when the weather gets a bit better! To add to this, after driving up the highway today and noticed that at around 3000rpm there is an audible vibration that I can actually feel through the wheel, pedals and the gear stick (it's a manual). When I stopped I put it in neutral and revved to 3000 and it was there. It's not devastating but it's there. My guess would be that it's not drive train related as it's still there when parked and in neutral, could it still be engine mount related?
  23. Could be, something I'll certainly check out. Certainly wasn't my first thought as the last time I had this issue (on Commodore), the symptoms were totally different. I didn't notice that when driving, only idle. In the case of my Impreza, it's a bit lumpy on idle. When it does it, there is no issue with the revvs or the speed.
  24. Hey all, joined up to the forum to get some help with my GG EJ20. I have a slight issue when accelerating in that my car dies this weird sort of bounce thing. It's hard to describe, feels like I have super tight suspension going over corrugations slowly....but not that noticeable if you get me? It's not the drive train or anything like, it's the engine. While parked I revved it and the weird vibrations started around 2000rpm. There doesn't seem to be any loss of power at any point and there is no check engine light. The cam belt was done at 160k, the car just ticked over 200k. It's a 2000 2.0 manual. And ideas on where I should look? Thanks guys
