  1. turners auctions. have yards in different places thruout nz. new/used/damaged .... www.turners.co.nz
  2. Cheers mate. It looks like I got some extra work to do! Some the milage these guys have been getting is making me cry! Especially after payin for the fuel on our Nelson Dunedin Nelson trip we just did!
  3. Now when I say this ... i was lookin at the regs for pre 96 class for mainland series a season 2 ago and in their regs it was stated No DCCD. Now this was at the time of reading ... cant remember exact date, but it had to be rally season! I was talkin to MNZ today and the dude there informed me that different round organisers can have their own rules for classes. Obviously NZRC classes have to be the same rules thru out but for other stuff the organisers can have their own rules added into the sup regs for their event. Im not saying Scrutineers down here are wanky. I just prefer to avoid trouble with scrutineers, it can stop me having the fun that motorsport gives me!
  4. This has probably been asked before buuuut ... What sort of mileage is everyone getting out of a tank in their cars?
  5. Got home from dunners and chch last night so today i got back into stripping out the rex ... no doors on it now! more weight removed, but couldnt notice it by lookin at it. Its easier to push now thou! roof liner, interior lites, blah blah, on and on it goes!
  6. In reply of that wrx shell, auction posted above. I was looking at that one a while ago. Josh Marsden is selling it. From memory theres something holding it back from being used as a rally car. And as a rally car we know it has to be road legal because of touring stages. It was a few months ago that I checked it out so things may have changed. But at the time Josh was saying it cant be road registered ....
  7. lol dude, sounds like you do exactly what I do when I come to something I cant remember or dont know hwo to do! Google it! then find one of the 50 zillion answers that would apply to you!
  8. Excellent, its good to see I aint the only rally pig round here .... Oh oh oh, can I have a turn now? Im 35 still acting like a teenager althou the body sometimes doesnt quite act like a teenager! Left school and did auto trade course, I did it with a bunch of my mates from high school so hence I didnt finish evrything i needed to get done! Left town and spend 18 months cruising round down south then came home to finish autotrade quals. Found all my mates had got into fishing and making money so i did that! Fishing gave me money and time off to play with, which led me into auquaculture and diving. Got made redundant when the company i worked for got bought out and now i'm back to sea fishing. Always been keen on playin round with vehicles and engines. Had an Falcon project vehicle that the missus made me get rid of when the kids were born! Now we own our house and it has a REAL 2 car garage so building a GC8 rally car. And I am in the sh*t with HER for getting it! On our 4th Subie. Been into rally for a few years, started out as a block marshall then running a b/m crew, then into rally organising commitee for an NZRC event. Been to other events helping out with timing gear and also wherever help required. I will help out anyone who needs it, Im no expert and I admit it. You never stop learning till the day you die.
  9. Im guessing that the model wrx you were involved with came with dccd as a factory part? My gc8 is 93-94 model and didnt come out of factory with it so I cant put it in. A lot of scrutineers have been doing it for years so they have an idea if your car shouldnt have parts that werent standard for the model for that period. As for brakes Im also guessing that you had to downgrade from the 4 pots to 2 pots? Common thing to do. I did the very same thing for my road car so I could run it in car club events and during Nelson rally when I was out running thru stages because of the fact that the 15 inch rims only JUST scraped over the 4 pot calipers. I couldnt run the car with 15in wheels & rally tyres & the 4 pots so I had to change the calipers and rotors to the 2's.
  10. Tyre in the boot is a good start bro, but it depends whether you want to be running the factory fuel tank or just bypass that and install a fuel cell in the boot. Thats means you will need your spare in the back. If you do go with a fuel cell I believe you will have to have the opening between the boot and rear of the passenger compartment properly sealed incase of a fuel leak in the cell. I am building a 4 door gc8 rally car at the mo. I am using a 0.9 mm alloy piece to cover the holes in the parcel tray and the gap thru the boot to passenger compartment. Just make a template of the area with cardboard then transfer to alloy sheet and cutout. Rear door side intrusion bars and cards are removed and the cards will be replaced with alloy using the same method. Look into what class you want to enter, I'm looking at pre 96 & there is so limits on what parts your car may have for the class. Its been ages since I looked in the regs but for my gc8 it cant have dccd etc etc. I dont think you will find a 16in rally tyre made. I was looking for some for a set of gold rims i was looking at a while ago and I was informed theres is not such thing. 13/14/15in are the only sizes the rally tyre comes in. A helmet hammock in the back will hold your helmet during touring stages and during special stages it holds your touring headset/bag/jacket(because when stuck in the middle of a stage broken down you want a jacket for warmth. trust me it aint fun when your race overalls a damp/wet & you have to sit round in em!) wallet, etc etc. Gotasuby is correct also. Its not a matter of if you have an off road excursion, but when you have an off! So if you get off lightly your car maybe ready for the next days leg or you may have to skip it and the next event while you find costly & hard to find parts for a 2 door. If you arent already, you will need to join a car club because you have to be a member of one to apply for and hold a motorsport licence. When you build/have a rollcage installed you will have to a motorsport nz authority card for the alterations to the car to be able to get a warrant of fitness. Theres a lot of behind the scenes bits to take into account when building your car dude. Join a car club because the members have been there done that & then apply for clubsport licence. Its only 60 odd bucks thru their website and with your membership they send out the latest Motorsport manual which has what you need to know and learn for building the car & also for later on when you are rallying. Sorry to be so long winded mate but like i said there is a LOT to look at dude!
  11. Dunno if this link will work but .... this is the folder I have some pics in. Let me know if it can be viewed. http://www.facebook.com/brian.kirkwood.3?ref=tn_tnmn#!/media/set/?set=a.409568045721603.101387.100000052323255&type=3
  12. Stripping out REX for rollcage install. Removed R/F door, R/F guard, all plastic covers and bits from behind guard, wiring loom from boot, rear washer bottle, sound deadning out of boot and half of interior (1.5 supermarket bags so far & 2 kg of dry ice), rear bumper, bottom half of dash, centre console, sunvisors, front seat belts, bonnet locking cables/latches, & ground off the rear seat hookup points below parcel tray. Made a template out of cardboard and cutout of alloy a new panel to screw into centre console to mount 12v kill switch, engine start button, missile switch for anti lag, toggle switches ..... And the list of jobs to be done is still growing!
  13. Pulled the trim off the rear of the RS and discovered how bad the rust problem has gotten while its been forgotten in storage. OWCH DUDE theres some work going on there!
  14. Any Clubsub member out there who can help me ... I'm trying to find the previous owner of a WRC Blue WRX rego TUFWRX?
  15. Fuel pumps dont slowly die over a couple of years... theres a sock on the bottom of the fuel pump often garages use universal fuel pumps ad the socks arent as long as the factory specific one. if its shorter then it cant pickup or if the old one was put back in it may be full of sh*t. wouldnt hurt to throw a walbro in. cheaper than any factory replacement off trademe username rgoat $145. Is that your account bro?
  16. So you reckon its safer to just replace the in tank fuel pump?
  17. OK, ill try and answer these questions as I read down! Car is a 1997 WRX STI V-Limited, normal running it will boost to around 11-12 psi. I dont know whats standard for this model. The actual gears in it make it quite long legged, but I have noticed it does have a flat spot at times. You just feel it should have a little bit more kick to it. Its done it as long as ive had it. AFAIK ..... its never had the fuel pump removed. I will have to look at this then ... Ive had it for a cuppla years but havent really worried about the problem as I normally keep it above half tank. Driving to Picton from Nelson each week for work I have started to take more notice of it. I replaced the fuel filter 12 months ago to see if this would help... Nope! Wrong Sock??? Blocked filter Sock??? As in the filter that was replaced in engine bay or is there another one I should be lookin at? I can boost and turn as hard as I want or throw it through corners fine when the tank level is higher. Thats why I though it maybe a pickup problem, or fuel surging in the tank. Im not a fan of kicking it hard and boosting while its down round quarter of a tank because of the amount of crap that can be stirred up and sucked through the lines. I guess thats why we have a filter thou! Talking bout local crew ... is there any for the Nelson/Marlborough area? I have to go to Picton for work tomorrow so it will be another full tank and no problems!
  18. Decided not to clean it after paying for fuel .... 2.25 p/l .... damn when are they gunna stop rapin our asses for fuel?
  19. Heya all. Has anyone else had any probs with their WRX cutting out under boost when the tank is between half and empty? My rex has a habit of cutting out under hard boosting when its halfway between Half & Quarter tank and empty. Above this level it wil boost as hard as it normally does. I guess theres no baffles in the tank to avoid fuel slushing round and not getting to the pickup. I know this problem could be avoided by just keeping it above the level it starts doing it at but its hard to refill when ya in the middle of nowhere, eg, out in the wop wops or doing a road trip to CHCH from Nelson, return, late in the day when servo's are starting to close or closed. Ive had some thoughts about what to do like installing a surge tank, but this would take up space in the boot and its my everyday car not the rally car. Before you ask .... I have replaced the fuel filter.... But I figured I'd ask you guys and gals. Has anyoneelse had this problem and how did they sort it? Simple fix?
  20. Or just to be a smart ass ... SORRY!!!! Roving Idle like a rally car!
  21. HUUUGE thanks to you thorpey! Now I can get my ass into gear!
  22. Heya all, this is one for the guys & girls out that have changed suspension ... I have used the search tab but i havent found anything that deals with my question. I have got my hands on a 93 rex that has adjustables in it. My mate who Im getting it off wants to keep the adjustables that are in it, which is sweet as. What I want to know is will a set of suspension from a later model GC8 fit the 93 model car? Theres always 97-98-99 wrx suspension on trademe but theres no point me buying something that isnt gunna fit! Any help??? All info is appreaciated.

    DIY STI Mudflap

I got 2 original mudflats off trade me which have gone on the front. The guy had 6 all up. 4 were made using the same template mentioned in the earlier link by the look of it. Just a word from the last couple of days experience of mudflaps .... mount them a little bit higher than you would expect ... I have to lift the front 2 as on s bends and tighter roundabouts, (well any roundabout at higher speeds) there is a scratching noise coming from the wheel arches as they rub along the ground!

    DIY STI Mudflap

I just installed the front mudflaps onto my 97 rex. They are red with white sti logo and subaru technica int under the logo. Look damn cool, really standout with the red flaps and the 555 blue paint. I still gotta mount the back ones on there but its been a little bit cold out there! I just installed the WRC style carbon mirrors onto mine, with the Rally Pig decal. I'd love to add a rally type roof scoop but the factory roof vent is too wide to fit under! I will have to upload photos when Im done!
