JohnnyNZ, that's what a first car should be - a raggedy old beater. They teach you tonnes :)

I couldnt agree more, it really bugs me to see parents signing there kids death warrants buying them or going gaurantor on a loan for an excessivley fast car at a ridiculously young age.

Some of us break our backs working hard. The rest talk to mummy, or the bank. ;)

    /quote]

I second that. Im in the same job ive been in since i left school. I bust my ass doing 60+ hours a week on a shitty hourly wage. Every single car ive owned has been paid up by myself with no help from mummy or daddy.

Same brought my first WRX at 19 cash. I owe a little on my current one but I had worked hard got a good great credit rating and had good savings I built with a credit union who did me a great low interest deal.

Will be all paid off soon and I will have worked damn hard to have it.

I was pretty lucky though, my parents gave me my first car (80 something Mazda 323 Auto, beat up as hell) after that it was all up to me as it should be. and when I sold that car the money went back to my folks.

  3. Yeah to be fair a LOT of youg people are working some crazy hours nowadays. Even while at school.

I used to pull about 20 hours a week plus school but I know of people in my business pulling 40 hours + school and there parents have no issue with it. Some of these young guys are just extremly driven to get what they want.

And of course as said some get it handed to them on a silver platter, that I have an issue with.

i heard u can use your 5 speed clutch on a 6 speed box?? so if u use the 3.9 diff is that the r180 ones?? could i use my factory rear subframe and cv's and hubs??

I think you can use the 5 speed clutch.

I have no experience with this so dont take that as gospel, there used to be a sticky in this thread before the board collapse on how to do a 6 speed conversion.

If you sit tight another day or two someone with the knowledge should pop up as I know theres a few guys lurking who have done this conversion.

  5. I basicaly get lubed up and bent over by NAC every month.

I got an unhealthy amount of tickets in my teens in while being a pizza boy. And unfortunatly still get a few now in the work car as I travel a lot and I have been done doing a cheeky 115 a few times in the last two years.

I also had an unfortunate incident which saw my last WRX hit a couple of parked cars, I wasnt doing anything silly or illegal just driver error in the wet after a long day at work and I messed my car up pretty bad.

About the only thing on the insuance no no list I havent done is lost my license really.

So I dont even bother shopping around atm, I just pay up and try not to fuck this car up so I can afford to carry on the Subi and otherwise Hi Po car love I have going on. When I turn 25 or change car I will shop around a bit I guess.

I loved my corolla, the valve bouncing demon that it was.

And the new corollas are not too bad, had plenty of rentals which have been quicker than most older 2L cars ive driven.

    1.8l vvti model.

I second that, I was stuck in one for a while until my new work car came. Handing it back was a sad day i nthe end. I grew attatched to the bloody thing.

Im sorry i burst your little bubble, but you are adding b]many[/b] KGs from the 6 speed box and running gear, the brembos and the sub/amp you have(yes, i have read your drivel on other forums).

Plus you dont have many little extras like a seam welded chassis, or alloy lower arms. I could go on.

Your car will most likely be substantially heavier than a standard GC8 Sti, and even supposing you put in the SVX engine you are banging on(which will add more KGs) about wont be anywhere near as quick, and it wont handle as well.

    Fact.

Your car is only worth what someone will pay for it. Fact.

The NAC(like any rational person) see that your car + x dollars of mods does not=whatever figure you seem to have plucked from thin air.

Im sorry im not trying to be mean, but please understand the insurance companies work on cold hard facts and no amount of emotion will make a difference to this. As any car enthusiast should know, the dollar value of mods you throw at your car does not necessarily add to the overall value of it.

Right. The 'WHAT THE F**K' bits are highlighted bold.

    1) 6MT, 'many' KGs. I take it you've lifted one of both, correct? In fact, you've lifted all three, right? Because I mean, that's the only way you can know the weight comparison.

It's not like I haven't lifted 2x manual gearboxes, 2x auto gearboxes, 1x tiptronic gearbox and 1x 6MT box, and it's not like I own FOUR of the above boxes or anything.

Let's go through this. For reference - I am female, 5'1", very small hands - things can be difficult to lift.

Auto gearboxes: the only thing I can do is put my hands around the back by the propshaft, and pull with all my weight. Even with a guy on the other end I can only get it a few inches off the ground for a few seconds before I drop it. BOTH boxes I am referring to had been drained of ATF, one of them still had diff fluid to sh!t all over me.

Tiptronic gearbox: I was expecting more of the same. However, in doing so, I almost decked myself in the face with the back of the box. They are LIGHT.

5MT gearboxes: more of the same. Absolutely no sweat. But we knew that, didn't we?

6MT gearbox: We had to carry it from the trailer to storage. Holding the rear of the box, I was actually able to assist mangling it all the way in. Sure it was heavy, but I didn't drop it in desperation in the same way as I did the autos.

Conclusion: Auto boxes are still significantly heavier. 6MTs are adding weight, but not remarkably much.

(Edit: my Impreza was once auto.)

    2) Sub/amp. If you had've read the 'drivel' on 'other forums', you would already have realised that i) the amp was both blown and stolen, and ii) the sub is going in the WAGON.

    Lurk moar.

    3) Seam welded chassis. AFAIK this isn't exactly conducive to the crumple zones required for impact regulations, so I hardly think ANY STi is going to have that rather than the standard spot welding (correct me if I'm wrong though. Maybe the RA/Spec C models are special? Iunno). And if you lurked moar for once you'll find that I'm on an EJ20 in a GC8 chassis, which is spot welded just like any other 2.0L Subaru.

    4) Alloy arms. Also, if you lurked harder, you'd find that's on my shopping list. WRXs don't have them either.

    5) SVX engine. Why the hell would I put a big heavy EG33 in a small car like an Impreza? I have mentioned an SVX before, just once. In complimenting Nomake Wan's 1993 example in black, and its tidy condition. THAT IS IT. I don't know where you get half this rubbish...

    6) Wait. Engines handle? This is new to me. I thought it was the suspension setup and chassis properties that did that part. AFAIK engines provide power. Maybe I was wrong? At any rate, the HX20s is rated at 1180kg from factory from what I understand. I didn't realise they made STis lighter than the RA's 1280kg. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that leaves me 100kg to play with before I hit the bottom end of the weight zone. Maybe my maths theory is wrong too?

Perhaps you should look around and see what people are actually selling modified cars for at present, and in the recent past. It's certainly not as low as you're implying, no matter the start chassis (though as far as I can tell, a GC8 is a GC8 once stripped of running gear, correct? Hence it not being a GC6 and lacking certain crossmembers, or lower and earning itself a whole pile of glue?).

How about you stop accusing me of 'driveling' and start actually pulling facts to the table, instead of doing what you're accusing me of yourself? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

    ROFL...

This is super to read (well skim) guys.

Shale im guessing you can probably google gearbox specs to find weight, its probably a tad more scientific than how long you managed to hold one for one day when the wind blew in from the west.

And secondly what Modded cars are going for isnt a clear indication of anything, if you really want a good indication go ask said sellers what they have sepnt on that car. Im gonna guess that if they recovered 50% of there money spent on it they are doing bloody well indeed.

Other than that guys, carry on.

    Anyone got popcorn???

  8. Good points your raising IMO Swindog.

I think a lot of these guys will never leave the street because there not the "Biggest dog in the Yard" as it were anymore.

From my observations a lot of them are very selective on who they race and the thought of racing someone with a more powerful car is to overwhelming for them.

Its like an insult to there manhood that they may lose to a more powerful or better set up car. Or heaven forbid a better driver.

Lets be honest well know the best drivers are on the streets yo!!! ::)

    Well in there minds anyway.

  9. So far no ones sniping at each other like petty two year olds, i think were pretty safe from the deep freeze at this point.

Also the reality is there is nothing we can do as a club other than drive in such a way that represents the club and ourselves as individuals in a good manner.

No meeting or media campaign will change anything. The best way to change peoples perceptions is one at a time.

And as stated earlier Boyracer is a media term, if you hope to change the Media good luck because its there little bone at the moment. Sex and fast cars sell, people who own fast cars (and have sex I guess lol) getting in trouble due to there own foolish behaviour is bound to sell.

Eveyone likes to see the righ little snot or the stuck up bastard in his flash car get his commupence. Sadly those sterotypes also come with the boyracer image quite often. Another thing you cant change on a grand scale only on a one on one basis.

If you really dont want the po, the media or the public showing you any form of disdain for what you drive go out and buy yourself a more conformist (for lack of a better word) car. If you like your Subi and dont want to give it up suck up the bad that comes with it and move on.

  10. Im sure it is, v6 STI Spoiler, v8 STI Scoop, Lowered, light tints, exhaust. So yeah I guess it is.

I got pulled over a bit when i first got it but not much anymore. Smallish town means most cops pull you over to see whos driving the new car in town. Once word gets around if your not a tool you get left alone.

I just get pulled over by new cops now really, Rego and warrant check and on my way. Funnily enough the cops who know me (have done the rego warrant check a few times) often dont even stop me at WOF and Rego check points anymore as they know me and know I keep my car legit at all times.

What are we talking about, a little more information please! This thread makes no sense at all, looks like someones been delting posts ???

If we are talking the face lift fog light's for the Gen 2 leggy's, the outside ones are turn lamps that come on when the indicator is on. And i have passed my last 2 wofs with the fog lights being inoperative. the fuse for the fogs keeps blowing, i've yet to find why - i have just given up on it for now.

Then your lucky because my last two WRXs have failed for non working spotlights. I have chewed through two sets on each before I gave up on them.

  12. Doesnt seem to be any around the seals, just seems to be a bit coming out of the trumpet on the BOV.

When my engine blew we found a lot in the IC but I think we got it all out. It also got overfilled just before its last service. GF saw it was low and thought more is better than not enough and overfilled it really badly.

    its pretty easy man..

Mount a can, then bung up the intake where the breathers enter it.. Route the pipes your have removed from intake to the catch can.

Have a play to figure out what bits you need in terms of piping (size, length) etc.., then go for it.

There is a breather on each rocker cover (on the top) and one at the back (top of) the crank case which is pretty close to your turbo compressor wheel.

most catch cans only have to inlets, so figure out which two you are going to route to the can..

Im planning to route two the two rocker cover breathers together then into one inlet, and the crank case breather into the other can inlet.

(wheather it is safe to route the two rocker covers together im not sure, but i dont see it being an issue)

Thanks Jon, thats my next weekend sorted lol.

Im getting alot oily residue through out the engine bay, especialy a bit coming out of the BOV. Im assuming a catch can should fix this.

Not everyone knows that, in fact i would venture that bugger all people would.

Not if your teh harkore tuner!!!! as said fellow seems to be , im guessing for that type of person it would be rather common konwledge.

Just bad wording from Ichi I think.

But +1 on the Coupe info, would be keen as to know more.
