Slight thread hijack. But I've always been told that if your car is 4wd or awd you have to have chains on all 4 wheels? Is this true?

Nope on the front will do, I run AWD vans and Buses and only ever run chains on the front when necessary( which isnt often as my vehicles are set up for snow and ice use mainly running a skinny AT type tire on them)

What do you need them for? Snow Socks (http://www.autosock.com/en/) are good for any sealed roads but ski feel roads, I.e. gravel roads will tear them to pieces. But, when you look at them, they won't cause any damage to your wheels or tyres.

These are next to useless, except on sealed SNOWY roads, no good on ice and no good on gravel ( I looked into these a heap when they were released as a good easy chain replacment) also they don't like roads that are gritted.

Your best bet would be smaller rims and "normal" quickfit type chains

  3. Throw a 2 litre or 2.2 in it, they will last longer then the 2.5 for not alot of loss

when it comes down to it, scrap it and spend another couple of grand on another wagon that who knows how good the engine is, or spend the 2k on a decent engine and installation, and have a car that you know where you are at with it.

Case in point although not a subaru, I have just spent $3k on doing a full engine rebuild on a isuzu MU, the old engine developed a bad knock after an overheat,I could of scrapped it then and there and then went and spent anywhere between 2 and 5k on another MU BUT i would be buying a vehicle that I have no idea how good it is, I know that my MU has no rust, has a good trans, and everything else on it is mint, so I dropped 1800 on a rebuild kit( not bad considering it included a new head, pistons, liners, rings, bearing and a full gasket set) I then spent a few hours rebuilding the engine, I will now have a vehicle that will last for another few 100,000 km for 3k

  4. Why are you driving an unwarranted, unregistered car on the road ? It rips my undies that you do this then whinge when you get caught, I spend thousands a year to make sure my cars a fully insured, Registered and Wofed at all times while being used,

Pay the fines and dont drive the car till it is legal

  5. I done this, dodgy fuel set up ( pressure sprayer as still cannot get fuel from tank, suspecting a blocked tank pickup) and found out it has a water leak but a bit more positive about it now as it does run nicely, which is contrary to what I was told,I dont think anything major wrong with the engine( other than noisy tappets)

  6. as posted in other thread, i doubt there is ever a truly completely rust free brumby, mine is damn close and i would say it has maybe 5% of surface rust

look on trademe and expect to pay 4k+ unless you are lucky like me and find one unused in a farmers shed

  7. Here is my NON subaru experience, we brought a toyota estima a few years back, the 2 engine options are a 2.4 inline 4 or a 3l v6 both same spec otherwise( 4 speed auto AWD) we had both for consecutive weeks, the 2.4 was when driven the way we drive cars ( not overly worried about fuel usage) was waayyyy more hungry, and gutless, where as the v6 just did and still does it all effortlessly and used if not the same fuel in our usage maybe a wee bit less.

    True...

Wonder if it would be easier to stick Outback suspension under a Legacy.:D

He's after ground clearance, for ski-roads and the like, and is sick of driving 4wd utes.

I am guessing SI skifield roads :) And why does he need a manual? autos are way better in those conditions than any manual( I have spent a few thousands KM's driving in those conditions and prefer Auto all day every day)

  9. yup there was a heap of these imported about 18 months ago, government owned in japan so never registered, until they were released for sale in 2014,so although built mid '90s they were not "first registered in japan"until 2014, there was alot of crap about them from the NZTA,but the importer went back to them saying that the rules were made by them and the buses were well within the rules :)
