  1. Howdy folks,

We have a JDM 1996 legacy wagon that\'s developed two problems:

    1. Front passenger side electric window is not controllable in up direction (down is ok tho..) from drivers controls, and it stopped working briefly with passenger switch too, but seems to have come right now. Reckon disconnecting battery is worth a shot?

    2. Reverse lights only come on sometimes, seems to depend on how you hold the gear stick in the gate. I tried removing trim around gear stick looking for a switch, but couldn\'t find one, I\'m guessing it\'s inside the gearbox? Has been thru a few warrant of fitnesses with this problem, and has not been picked up so far.

Any ideas what I can try before heading to an auto sparky please?

    Cheers

  2. Howdy guys!

We had our BG Legacy non-turbo SOHC wagon serviced + cambelt replaced last month, and ever since it seems to be down on power, like it is running on 3 cylinders. Is there any chance the mechanic messed something up? Reason I say this is: mechanic didn\'t seal a coolant pipe during service and it leaked the day we got car back, so needed to be sent back to do properly (leading me to think perhaps he had an \'off\' day & forgot something else). Also, it seems a hell of a coincidence for whatever has failed to do so EXACTLY during service or immediately before/after.

    Symptoms are:

    - low on power, almost stalling going up any decent slope in first gear.

    - aircon compressor now squeals when engaged, sounds like belt is slipping.

    - engine smells hot (altho seems to be decreasing lately and may just have been excess oils spilt during service)

    Have also noticed:

    -no dropped fluids,

-no smoke or fuel blowing out exhaust,

-no froth or coolant in dipstick oil indicating head-gasket failure,

    -engine temperature reads perfect,

-not sure about fuel economy, but may be slightly worse than normal.

Have taken car back to mechanic and he said it is running on 3 cylinders and thinks its electrical related so changed plugs/leads but still no luck, has ordered a new coil which will arrive in a few days.

Is there anything else to check for like the mechanic installed fuel filter incorrectly or something else during a routine service/cambelt replacement to cause this loss of power? As much as all signs point to something electrical, I\'d rather rule out mechanic error before replacing all the electrics at my cost!

    Appreciate any help & ideas

  3. Howdy folks,

I\'ve noticed my battery seems to be getting drained overnight lately, and suspect its the radio aerial. The aerial auto-retracts when you turn the car off, and lately after turning car off & walking away I can hear it still trying to retract.

    Some questions:

    1. Is this more likely to be problem with the radio aerial itself - or the head unit ( I installed headunit myself years ago & wonder if a wire has worked loose)

    2. If the problem is the aerial, how do I fix it, is replacement a better option?

car is a JDM MY96 WRX sedan

    Any help much appreciated -thanks!

And in my experience it does also depend on your mods. Mine when relatively standard seemed to handle the track days pretty well, once the mods started thats when niggles and dead motor (coincedence perhaps) happened.

    But above info all good.

From what I can see the only mod is a 3" exhaust. Fingers crossed this is one benefit to staying stock!

New oil and filter if it's getting old, brake fluid if it's old / been round the track a bit, check brake pad thickness and your discs for cracks, check gearbox fluid, powersteering fluid, clutch fluid, coolant and replace / topup if old/low. Check tyre wear/pressures/alignment.

Pretty much, as much 'normal' maintenance as the car needs/you want to commit to

thanks for that list - helps heaps!

sounds like it won't cost moonbeams to do that on top of a standard service.

Is brake glaze likely to be burnt of while on the track, or better to fix prior?

    What is the car?

Generally a cars ability to survive a track day (in my experience) comes down to a few things - namely, mechanical condition of the car, mechanical sympathy of the driver and the danger level of the track.

    car is GC8 WRX sedan

As much as I enjoy trackwork, I don't live on the redline so put me down for mechanical sympathetic!

  7. howdy folks,

I'm considering using my daily driver in an upcoming trackday, but have reservations due to past experiences with mechanical reliability. I've been out on the track before for open days and really enjoyed it, even in it's limited form.

Over the last few years I've had issues with hoses springing leaks on three separate times & in three separate places, which ended up costing $$$ to fix (thanks to hose under the intercooler being hard to access... ) so am dubious about surviving a trackday without something letting go.

I maintain the car really well, but as its now 15 years old & getting long in the tooth so I guess things are just more likely to fail - such is life!

Can't really afford a car out of action tho, especially due to huge mechanical bills but I REALLY want to get out on the track! Decisions, decisions!

What do you guys think? How do you decide if ya car is up to a track day? Do you budget for mechanical issues as just part of a trackday?

I'm keen to hear your experiences

    thanks!

  8. Howdy!

Our clutch pedal pad rubber is worn out & most likely to fail it's next warrant of fitness.

In your experience where is the best place to source a replacement from, Subaru Dealer, Partmaster, Supercheap, Repco or wreckers? I've tried trade me with no luck :(

Will the dealer still stock this part, given that its now 16 years old? Not sure we even have a Subaru dealer here in Taupo anymore too.

    Car is a 1996 Legacy

    Any help much appreciated :)

  9. All wired up now, hooking into the tail lights was a mission, as it is located in the tailgate fascia away from the tail light cluster - I traced the wire back & *think* i got it right, will borrow a trailer to test as soon as possible.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, I really appreciate your help! Hope I can return the favour if anyone needs renovation or new house plan advice.

    Thanks,

    sooby

  10. Ok, so I've run a wire across and into the left indicator, checked with a multimeter & it works.

Now I only have four left to do, however the brown wire is confusing me, as it says it is "rear lamps, clearance & side marker lamps" pin number: 7 what on earth do I connect this into??

Also, pin 5 is labelled service brakes (blue) just confirming this is brake light & not rear tail lights?

    Any ideas?
