  1. we went to the engine reconditioners today my mate got a 160hp escort moter built there and $600 for the heads checked skimed all the parts needed and refitted to motor how often do the subaru radiators clog up ? the one on the gtb looks like its been cleaned allready
  2. oh really whys thats? are those 1s shitters?
  3. heya i just purchased an oil cooler kit with braided lines and remote filter kit included mainly for protection when i do track days http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=284680940 i thought this was am good deal will get it cleaned properly before i fit what i need to know is it okay to use on a road car with a thermostat in the sandwich plate so ideally it should only cool when the oil does get really hot good idea or not good idea? oil i use is valvolene VR1 racing 10w - 40 5l of it i currently have a monza sandwich plate brought from japrace supplies for my oil pressure gauge does anybody know if these have a built in thermostat?
  4. ok so put another new thermostat in and make up the heater pipe joiner (2x garden tees 16mm and a peice of pipe wit hose clamps) just to see if it made a difference and it didnt look like it was overheating but then we drove the car 12km home to my mates house and when he stopped the heat went straight up on the gauge now with headgaskets what would you generally replace at the same time? we are going to pull the motor this week and wip heads off and get them checked to make sure not soft and if not then a skim and clean up how do you know if the block is still ok ?
  5. sorry i thought you meant something else ??? i understand now how did you find it when you finished it all? is there a good amount of adjustment? was it a mission trying to get the shock and the knuckle right? is a good idea realy wonder y subaru never did this?
  6. on the front there are the offset camber bolts on both sides
  7. yea ill try the thermostat tomorrow and if it still heats up ill try your heater pipe mod and then get it checked if it still does it
  8. dubbedup why only do one side? i take it this is for extra camber tweaking in the back so you can you alignment and then do camber after? y not just copy the sizes etc from the front hub and shock also how would you get the hole in the hub right? do you ahve to remove it and drill it that size ?
  9. heya tried it today with no thermostat and it bled up with about 1l of coolant in system as we will probably drop it tomorrow again and tested it with a thermometer and it bled out bubbles and i topped it up until about 95c and then put the cap on and about 30secs after that the fans came on so i waited until this happened three times then took car for a drive the whole process so far the temp was 1/2 on gauge i stopped and the radiator fan came on after about 2minutes of idling still 1/2 on gauge with no thermostat and driving at 100 110km so took off and went home again about 2 or 3 km and temp stayed at 1/2 all the way stopped in shed and waited for fans to go and stop twice they did temp was still at 1/2way it didnt move at all over the time so far so we pulled the water temp sensor out and replaced it with one out of my old ej18 legacy (that has a hole in motor where you can see in and see the crank bearing surface and no rod to be seen) so we did that and refilled what spilled out and started and waited for the fans to come on sure enough they did so we drove down the road again the same distance as last time and as sson as we started to move the gauge was at about 1/8 to a 1/4 still with no thermostat we stopped and it began to rise slowly again so we drove off again and the gauge dropped again which is right when the thermostat is not in motor ???? please can someone confirm this we got to the garage and stopeed and idled and the fans came on and temp up to half way again we let the motor cool right down again so the temp gauge didnt show any heat in it the water came back through from overflow tank till about 10mm from the top of the header tank the heater was setto widow demist and 32 and it allways had heat there also we rang repco to see what the deal was with the thermostats and they said that its probaby a lazy one so i take it that it happens all the time will fit another thermostat tomorrow and try again also both heater lines have equal heat in them when squeezed
  10. oh so when was it heating up? did you check the thermostat and was it okay? im thinking of doing this but not sure if willing to hack up lines if not the problem
  11. when you blow a headgasket will it always get hot? and will there be oil in water vise versa so far we have changed and bled the water 2 times changed the radiator cap and run water from the hose through all the water lines you can access from the top if motor and checked the thermostat and it seems to be in the temperature range that manual suggests
  12. no not yet we are going to see if it does the same thing without the thermostat in and then if it does get a sniffer for the coolant and a leak down test
  13. ok so we moved it into shed after we drove about 12km and let it sit for about 15mins we started it and idled for about 2 minutes with the radiator cap off and the water started to boil out of the header tank but it fans came on just before this we pulled te thermostat out and put in water at 95c it took 1 min 10 sec to fully open the thermostat by then the water was at 86c and then the thermostat was fully closed at 76c is this to slow for the thermostat to open to cool the motor?
  14. also when it gets hot as soon as you move again the temperature drops straight away
  15. also we compared it to running like my rsb and the cars where perfectly even match the gtb has a full 2.5" exhaust and it didnt overheat during or after that
  16. the heater when bleeding is hot like normal when set to window demist and 1st or 2nd speed the heater goes when it gets hot but there is not as much heat as normal keeping this in mind we bled the system for about 40mins until it boiled topping up a little bit each time and the temperature gauge never moved from just below half
  17. got a new radiator cap and tried to bleed the air out without cap on the water slowly started to get hotter and hotter and the thermostat opened until the water was boiling out of top tank and the fans never went at all during that time also when bleeding we held revs at 2000rpm for about 30secs and a consistent stream of bubbles came out the filler but nothing at idle before or after holding revs
  18. thanks we will borrow a radiator cap and do this mod and see how we get on
  19. yea apparently fans are flat out and overflow is full
  20. could this be from a bung radiator cap?
  21. yea the fans are going aye and he reckons he has bled it all out
  22. Heya, my mate has just bought a 1996 gtb with ej20r etc etc ill cut stright to the chase when he got it had 157km and been sitting for 2 years not sure if it had water or not but anyways we got it going and the water pump was rooting as it would loose water and heat up on idle after say filled to top and driven 30k so we replaced that and did a cambelt etc and thermostat collant oil at the same time and got it running mint it seemed to take alot of water but eventually filled up and it has been good for a week so far and the water level when cold on header tank has allways returned to top when checked in the morning now its started to heat up randomly when you stop and idle (like straight away to 3/4) we did it tonight and went about 5km and then stopped and nothing but he left my house and said it keeps heating up at idle at the lights or anywhere he stops for longer than 10 secnds when he pulled the hose off top tank to bleed air and refill all he got was steam ive read the other posts and they all suggest thermostat what else could it be apart from headgasket seemed bit weird that it would go mint and then do it
  23. yea that 1 but also see the one just under the brake booster vaccum pipe in the middle at the top yours has that black grommet
  24. ok so we got the wagon and something i have been wondering it has a plug just in behind the intercooler that goes through its own grommet above the unused plug taped to the rest of the loom the wires im talking about has 2 wires but there is nothing i can see that plugs into anything anyone else with a 96 gtb got the same wire but connected up
  25. thanks its a bg5b gtb with ej20r and ty752vbcaa gearbox vf18 and vf 19 yellows etc etc
