    Ok pulled the cluster out and went to work (repco) had a look at bulbs but basicly found nothng brighter

    Although most the bulbs had a black oil film to them so i might replace them

    All in all i think i will invest in led bulb

    The bulbs it had were t 5 mainly it had 1 t10 and a couple of t6.5s

    would be super good if you could give us a photo of what your new bulbs look like on the cluster and provide part number of bulbs used =)

  2. Thats what I was thinking. Because I\'m not going for super power I was thinking for the block;

    1. Get block checked

    2. Check crank and grind.

    3. Fit new bearings.

    4. Replace piston rings.

    5. Replace 2 x conrods.

    6. Refit all together.

    Surely the same end result and at a much cheaper rate than say buying a reconditioned V5 STI block for $800-1000?

  3. Will look and report back regarding head stamp.

    Would I be better buying a reconditioned short block and trusting someone else\'s work or buying my own and replacing components?

    I know I can get a v7 sti short lock as is for 750 unsure condition.

    F f s sub currently has no v7 sti blocks =\ only a v5 sti

    Thanks again for your input

  4. Stripping is the easy part Ross\' =). Just to confirm I have never done anything like this before. to make it a bit easier I have about 40 bags of parts labeled with locations on them haha. Just couldn\'t bring myself to fork out some major coin for a professional.

    2 of my rods are pretty buggered so these will need replaced. Unsure if I will go to the wreckers or buy new.

    Going to get my heads tested like you said early next week. Unsure what I need to do as far as the block is concerned. I suppose I should get my crank checked and ground if needed. Im thinking by the time I pay for my block to be checked, grind my crank, plain the head if needed, replace bearings, replace 2 rods . . . Do i just go and buy another block or even a V7 STI block / Chuck my heads on once they are given the green light and away I go?

  5. Another update;

    Split down most of block. Have not dismantled head components yet.

    Some munched parts here. Hoping my crank is ok and I can still use my Conrod with the bearing rubbing on it. Pistons appear fine and nothing suggests a answer to my 0.00% compression issue - Bit of a coincidence that the cylinder with no compression was also the one that ran a bearing?

    Can someone tell me if this is the right block in my car ? V5 STI. Trying to distinguish if it is original to the car or not.

    The position of the thrust bearing on the fifth main housing suggests the block is newer than 98, as pre 98 had the thrust bearing on the third main bearing housing. I hope this is correct?

  6. Well, just a quick update;

    I have started to pull down my motor. Everything that has come off is actually in really good nick! Does not look like the engine has been apart before. Intake manifold / Intercooler is clean. No gunky residue inside. VF28 turbo , no shaft play or damage to fins.

    Still a bit confused as main issue is 0.00% compression on number 4.

    Turned crank manually - all valves moving up and down.

    Pulled head off number 4 - piston looks fine from top view. Block slightly scored but nothing out of ordinary.

    Top of valves all look in place and seat well, little carbon build up but nothing to be alarmed about.

    No sign of head gaskets leaking.

    Have noticed one bearing is completely screwed, quite a lot of play when you give it a shake.

    At this stage I thought I would have found a chip in a valve or a gaping hole in a piston or something. Nothing, almost concerning I have a major problem, taken motor to bits and have not found a cause yet- not much more to take apart!

    Am just about to take the head off the the other side and fully disassemble the block. Will update soon.

  7. Hi all,

    Quick question.

    I have a V5 STI ; Will a V7 STI motor fit directly into my V5? Or would i need further components?

    Also, if i do put it in will my factory ECU run this fine or would I need a aftermarket one etc?

    I need a new engine in my car and the wrecker was swaying more into putting in a V7 engine opposed to using a V7 STI block and my current heads etc.

    Also whats fair price for;

    1 x V7 STI Short Block

    1 x V7 STI engine approx 98kms

    Thanks again,

    Ben
