  1. So in an all wheel drive it's possible to drive out of over steer but not under steer? Just making sure I'm thinking about this correctly. Ah I see, so a smaller bar by diameter may have a higher torsion strength than say a thicker bar but then thinner bar in this scenario would alleviate the 'sway' better?
  2. Hi team, Started car from cold this morning and got to the first set of traffic lights. Noticed car was idling at 1500rpm which is a little unusual for my car (it usually hits warm idle very quickly). Drove about another 1km to my destination, stopped car for 10min (and turned off), started car and drove to next traffic light - rev meter fluctuating between 500 and 2000rpm and can't settle on a number. Engine check light came on. Drove 20km to destination (motorway) and 1km before destination the engine check light went off. When I reached my destination I let the car idle for 30secs. Revs at 500rpm the slowly climbed to 800rpm over 10 seconds. Vehicle is 1997 WRX STI. Is this my o2 sensor? Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
  3. I use under/over because I have no idea what is what. It's like an interchangeable term for me which I know is incorrect. So an extra 2mm will make a difference? I suppose it's a 10% size increase?
  4. I suppose that's true. I couldn't image that it's hollow surely?
  5. Well that was a lot of content to read - wasn't expecting that but I appreciate all the input. I drove around the Hunua ranges yesterday with my girlfriend. It was an epic road trip. I feel like I can hit full boost half way through an apex will full confidence I'll drive out of any under/over steer. My main concern is really the body roll and as of yesterday, steering responsiveness. I'm interested in mods that can increase steering responsiveness, keep the car more level through a corner, and increase my tyre contact patch. I measured the rear sway bar yesterday, 20mm. I don't know if it's factory but it seems like a healthy bar to me. Would I really notice much difference if I went up a millimeter or two?
  6. I found some second hand Tein adjustable suspension for my gc8 but can't find v7 inverted struts - I'll have to keep hunting. If I had the adjustable suspension would I need camber bolts too? Or are camber bolts like a cheap mans adjustable suspension?
  7. Awesome man - now I'm thinking about all the different bits I want and how much tighter this car will feel when I fit them. So many goodies, so little money I would love to do it myself but I don't have decent kit to lift my car up and I'll be damned if I'm doing it on the garage floor on my back. Mmm I like your style. I like the idea of a front lower bar in conjunction with the factory front strut brace and then a nice sway bar. I should do the same to the rear really shouldn't I? I've heard of camber bolts but never really looked at a photo of them - presumably they allow for some negative camber? Does adjustable suspension offer the same type of adjustment as camber bolts or not really? If the v7 inverted struts aren't an 'upgrade' then maybe I could also look to something aftermarket? Cheers for the article, I'll have a hunt and give it a read. Love all this kind of stuff.
  8. OMG - dreams do come true http://www.pro-wholesale.co.nz/ultra-racing-strut-brace-sway-bar-chassis-bracing-products/gc8-gf8-wrx/
  9. What was the most noticeable mod? I figured the anti-lift kit would make a huge difference, along with an upgraded rear sway bar. Would I need a front sway bar upgrade with the anti-lift kit though? I don't think the anti-lift kit is something I could tackle myself. Who did yours? v7 inverted struts sound fancy - I don't know what the inverted term means so I'll research it. My thoughts too on the rear strut brace. Oh and I had a look at that facebook link you sent through - those are some really nice bits but what the hell is a k-brace? I'm full of questions
  10. Excuse my ignorance but, I presume that those dampers would be an upgrade? Is the v7 factory rear sway bar thicker than what I have? I haven't actually put calipers on it to measure. I did see a Whiteline 22mm for sale on Trademe so it's good to hear that when you fitted yours it was in fact a more solid rear. Would hate to 'upgrade' it only for it to feel the same. I did some inspecting over the weekend and all the fluids look brand new and in really good condition to be honest. The brake pads have heaps of meat on them but I couldn't see what brand they were. It would be nice to get slotted rotors all round - that would really give me some more bite and hopefully keep them slightly cooler under load. When fitting a new sway bar is it recommended to upgrade the end links too? Is it a necessity or a recommendation and what benefit do I get from this? I'm really interested in an anti-lift kit. I suppose to some degree it's preventative maintenance too? I've also looked into a rear strut brace but I'm not to certain of the actual benefit of this? Would I need an adjustable one, if there even is such a thing, so that I can increase/decrease torsion? Thanks for the link - will look when the boss is out of the office
  11. Would this be considered an upgrade to my, presumably stock, dampers? How many beers are we talking?
  12. Great articles man - cheers for sharing. I definitely have a better idea of what I want to do. Think I need to really get familiar with the motor too. So I just took her for a 'real' drive yesterday - tried to keep up with a 1 litre bike through the back of Waimauku all the way to Hellensville. It was one hell of a drive. But I noticed myself forever trying to keep the car in the corner. As in, the power was fine, I'm happy with it, but what's power when you can't even corner properly. She was all over the place and I felt the rear slide out once or twice (is that over or under steer?). Also, the body was bottoming out on the tyres but I did see an invoice for guard rolling in the glove box. There must be any number of reasons that the body was hitting the tyres I'm assuming? Brakes started to get hot after this back street race so had to chill on the drive home. But wow - what a car. Thank you! I have read. As I was mentioning above, handling was challenge - I wander if old shock were contributing to the poor handling or the bottoming out on the tyres?
  13. You guys are legit - thank you so much for the comments. It sounds like I need to give D-Tech a call. I gather there are different types of tunes for different purposes, would that be correct? What is a Flex Fuel tune? What do dampers do sorry? (I'm no mechanic but like to understand these things) I have RE001s on the rear and some Kookmins on the front. The Kookmins don't make me feel very comfortable, as in, I would feel way more confident with the RE001s, but I have minimal experience with performance tyres. No shame at all hey haha Stock fuel pumps no good? Does the IAT go on the manifold or where? Does I need to fabricate something to fit? Will the rear sway bar keep the nose straight will it?
  14. Hi team, Well, I finally picked myself up a super tidy V3 STi after driving a people mover for the best part of four years. It has an exhaust and intake but other than that she's fairly stock, and straight. I'm after recommendations from you guys and girls regarding (the next) performance upgrades I should be looking into and recommendations on who should do the work. One name I have seen around here a little bit is Possum Bourne Motorsport. I would be keen to hear of your experiences, good and bad, at tuning shops around Auckland and your best 'bang for buck' performance upgrades that you would recommend for my stock-ish WRX STi. Thanks in advance. Brett
  15. i guess thats out west again? man if i ever get one of these im gunna make some sucker drive north
  16. i stand corrected but i think the rs-r or rs-ra possible had a vf12 maybe?? anyone know for sure? i think the rs had vf8 or 10 rs-r and rs-ra had coloured cam covers and rs-r had coloured intercooler covering (they abolished the colouring in 91 for the rs-ra's) 89 rs-r had std gbox 90-92 had close ratio there are a few other things im sure
  17. man im raise on the shore. the west is like 'far far away' for me i may come to the monthly meet on the 13th seen as i havent been to a meet in over 2years now ;S
  18. saturday i flushed the cooling system and replaced it with a low concentrate coolant (im praying the waterpump gasket doesnt go this time) did both belts sunday was induction time, just tinkered around
