  1. 5 speed box is quite a bit stronger than the 6 speed, however some of the 6 speeds got an LSD which is cool. If you want to know about the in\'s and out\'s then go ask on ToySpeed. The blacktops can actually be quite a temperamental engine if not serviced regularly. They can start using a lot of oil with higher kms. Most people on TS would be more comfortable with a high kms silvertop than a blacktop however I have owned both and the blacktop has more of a rush at the top end but doesn\'t really like 98 that much. Also bare in mind if you plan on turboing it the silvertop is the much better bet as it has stronger rods and lower compression.
  2. If both were brought new then may have been NZ tuned (IE not the same tune as JDM)
  3. Thanks for that info! awesme. I have been in touch with possumborne auto i think they are in CHCH i would be happy to travel if there is a better tuner further out...? Is Apet a good reputable company or are there some better outside of my region? Cheers Possumborne motorsport art based in auckland mate. Apet doesn\'t have the same reputation as possum borne motorsport or STM or ST hytec etc but Nik the guy that owns the place and tunes all the cars does have a LOT of experience. He has been dyno tuning cars for at least the last 10 years and Apet has been in Dunedin for the past 8 years from memory so they are not a new outfit. If it was building a 1000hp R35 GTR I might say take it to Sochi at ST Hytec in auckland but Nick at Apet has remapped literally dozens and dozens of sti\'s and he always leaves a safety margin in the tune rather than push it to the very last hp and risk making it a time bomb. The only other place that I can think of is NZ EFI in christchurch. They have a very big fan base (I am not one of them personally) and many people swear by them and rate them as one of the best in NZ. There are probably many other tuners out there I have missed but these are the ones that spring to mind. Also if you want to know why I am not a fan of NZ EFI you can PM me but I will not discuss/criticize any companies in the open forum as it is just not professional or polite
  4. I dunno about this.... safe in terms of in a crash yes... but probably not in terms of reliability..... hmmmm would I put my money on a high kms impreza or a high kms twin turbo legacy.... tough one. They both seem to be able to do some serious kms when looked after correctly their whole life (but a subaru going through its whole life without a fcukwit owner at some point is so rare)
  5. The closest place I can think of is Turboshop or Apet in Dunedin. I know Apet has done quite a few remaps but both Turboshop and Apet have proper dynos, Rolling road and DynoPac Hub dyno respectively *Edit I just spoke with Nic for you, the owner/tuner at Apet dunedin. He said he has dones 100\'s of subaru remaps for both 98 and 95 and gets lots of the farm guys from cromwell/alex etc bringing in their sti\'s and evo\'s for 95 remaps. Basically said even on 95 he would be able to do you a good 10-15kw atw more with heaps more torque and crucially a much safer tune which will also use less fuel. (the stock v7 maps are notoriously rich) Price wise about $500 which is actually really good. (STM in welly charges 1200, ST hytec in aucks is 1000 etc etc) https://www.facebook.com/pages/APET/182394231808306 Here is the webpage link and address/phone number Apet 262 Vogel Street Dunedin, Dunedin, New Zealand 9012 03-974 8291 Couldn\'t get ahold of turbo shop but I have a funny feeling Mike (the owner) doesnt do remaps there.... might be wrong. For me personally a remap would always be the first thing I would get done on any turbo subie.
  6. YES you should definitely get it remapped an sti will NOT like 95. If you do run it on 95 at all then drive it bloody quietly and possibly chuck in some good quality octane booster (this is only a short term measure tho, its bad to use the booster over a long period). Where do you live> that will decide where the best place to get it remapped is.
  7. hey all Was wondering last night, as my motoring needs become more and more sensible rather than boyracer-ish I have started to consider other cars. As such I was wondering how the 2002-2005 shape forester XT compares to the equivalent model wrx hatch in terms of handling and stability. I know they are both based on the impreza chassis but I wondered how much of that can really be felt in the forester. Reason why I ask is that the XT foresters don\'t seem to be slow really (same engine as that years wrx I believe?) but a bigger interior which appeals to me along with a much bigger boot and I think better towing capacity. Would prefer opinions from people who have owned/driven both thanks
  8. For a gearbox with a plated lsd, use the second one... that\'s what a lot of people in Wellington use as that\'s what macbilt recommend and sell at a good price. The third one is for a plated rear diff... I have used that, but went to redline shockproof because it is higher friction. For the FF LSD, there is a type 1 and type 2, for low or high friction. Ah okay so what sort ot LSD is there in a V7 jdm sti and a V9 jdm sti? I imagine all of those 3 oils would work well on all the lsds really though? or would you really be risking damage between the 3 different oils
  9. Okay from what I have seen in NZ at least motul seems to have the best options for Gearbox/Lsd oil How would you decide between these tho? http://www.motul.com/nz/en/products/107?f%5Bapplication%5D=141&f%5Brange%5D=25 http://www.motul.com/nz/en/products/447?f%5Bapplication%5D=141&f%5Brange%5D=25 http://www.motul.com/nz/en/products/58?f%5Bapplication%5D=141&f%5Brange%5D=25
  10. To be honest the questions is more out of concern for a lack of 98octane late at night in some of the rural areas around NZ during summer road trips u know?
  11. That would be partially useful but its not just the boost that would need twin maps though, would need ignition, timing fueling etc. otherwise an EBC would work just as well as 2nd boost map for the purposes of protecting the engine wouldn\'t it?. I mean it\'s not high boost I am worried about as much as det from advanced timing/ignitions maps that would be fine on 98 but det on 95
  12. ah okay, so the front LSD in sti\'s will just end up using whatever stuff you put in the gearbox? reason I asked is that most of the really good gearbox fluids are absent any LSD additives. I guess it can\'t be helped?
  13. if they are not seperate sealed (the gearbox and the rear diff) then why does subaru specify different quantities of fluid for each?
  14. Just a random question, I noticed on a subaru servicing site it recommends a certain product as oil for the gearbox which specifies that the oil is NOT designed for LSD applications. The site then goes on to recommend a different fluid for the diff that is designed with LSD additives added. So what I want to know is this Are the LSD\'s in the v7,8,9,10 located in a seperatly sealed diff? if so is that fluid for the DIFF kept seperate from the gearbox fluid? IE one type of fluid designed for Gbox and one designed for diff (LSD) Also some sti\'s have front LSD\'s, how are those lubricated then?
  15. Stock evo X\'s also get raped senseless by stock evo9\'s in terms of performance. Comfort and quality is another thing tho
  16. cheers man, I thought that might be the case but I am hanging out for some advice from some of the tuners that hang around on this site
  17. Hey all just wondering is it possible to reflash a stock GD wrx 2001-2005 so it has 2 different maps, one with higher boost for 98 and one tuned for 95 and better fuel econ. Was wondering what options there are for switching maps? Reason is that the car would be run mostly around town where 98 is available but then also in queenstown and central areas where only 96 is available. So what are the options there? can two maps be programed and easily switched? can a 98 tuned map survive the odd tank of 95? Should you use 95 and an octance booster or what?
  18. Is still a work in progress, will try and update with higher quality versions as I find them, watch this space and enjoy.
  19. Sometimes worth it, sometimes not, still would love to see a dyno of just the ZeroSports headers vs stock. They look purrrdy http://www.fortyone.co.nz/parts/view/12319.html

  21. Hey all I decided a few days ago to try and create some sort of resource for the two communities that I participate in, Toy Speed and Club Sub. It is still a work in progress so if there are any errors or mistakes or extra rounds that you find please just comment below and I will add them along with my own updates every few weeks. This is for all the silly questions I asked and arguments I wouldn\'t let go. Hope you guys enjoy it.
  22. Watched this video which made me want to buy a v8 sti, then I watched the 1998 one and it made me want to buy a wide body GC8, and I mean like Oprah wide body.
  23. Well put mate, I would still probably steer towards the tomei ones just because I know even if SSI makes them the design of the tomei ones is an extremely effective one with lots of dyno plots to back it up. As in even though SSI makes them (the tomei ones) SSI may not use that same design for their own or other branded headers you know? However it is still great to learn that SSI sounds like a brand to be trusted, as previously I knew them more as a distributor rather than a maker of parts.
  24. If that is all correct then I would say the SSI ones are probably very good as you say, however I have worked within the electronics retail industry for long enough and heard enough stories of which brand actually makes the panels for which other brands tv etc to be dubious of this sort of thing I am not saying you are lying or anything of the sort, but simply saying that when I want "A" I buy "A" rather than buying "B" which I have been told is made by the same guys that make "A" Maybe not the cheapest way to do things but I know with greater certainty that the credentials of my product are genuine. Again, not saying that SSI don\'t make the Tomei ones, just saying it would be hard to verify that with regards to the exact model/make/specs in question
