  1. can\'t just be as simply as a tuning issue at several tuning companies call a 2.0ltr engine reliable at 280kw atw but not so for the 2.5ltr. there must be some inherent weakness therefore that can\'t simply be tuned out.
  2. Just thought this could be a sticky or at least something easy to access as many people ask about how the 2.5 ltr compares to the 2ltr and there is much less knowledge in NZ about this where as the UK has a much larger information pool to draw on while having access to the same cars as us, thus making the comparisons relevant! Below is the link to the main UK subaru forum and the on going 2.5ltr engine failures thread. Makes for some very interesting reading. http://bbs.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-general-1/828990-2008-2010-2-5ltr-engine-failures.html The guts of it seems to be that should you intend to do significant power related mods then the 2.0 might be the safer bet unless you are willing to crack the 2.5ltr engine open and install stronger parts.
  3. clearly not on the sly enough....I do have most of the models fairly well nutted though, my knowledge is purely theoretical though, couldn\'t do much more than change the oil or switch a flat tire in the real world. My hawkeye knowledge is poor though, owing to the fact that I didn\'t like their shape until recently and as such refused to include them in my late night endless subaru tabs.
  4. at first I would have told him just to do the whole exhaust but after living with my flatmates stock v6 RA for the last year I was surprised by how loud a stock sti exhaust really is
  5. Hey all I know we often talk and ask about the differences between the V7 and 8 and then the V8 and the facelift with the nicer interior and change to 114 pattern but does anyone know what the differences between the facelift V9 and the last GD chassis the V10 Hawk eye sedan. these two cars basically so no one is confused https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=v9+sti&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=HOKVUenVH4e5iAefo4DgBw&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=944&bih=927#imgrc=h75qW9pfRRFzqM%3A%3BPqMHEzN2gk-JiM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fimages.trademe.co.nz%252Fphotoserver%252Ftq%252F257287741.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.trademe.co.nz%252Fmotors%252Fused-cars%252Fsubaru%252Fauction-582649474.htm%3B352%3B264 http://www.google.co.nz/imgres?safe=off&biw=944&bih=927&tbm=isch&tbnid=9e0pJlRdSy_CuM:&imgrefurl=http://s437.photobucket.com/albums/qq100/Deb_z/V10%2520wrx%2520sti/%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DDSC01705.jpg%26mediafilter%3Dimages&docid=MV7kq6UCsqvDXM&itg=1&imgurl=http://i437.photobucket.com/albums/qq100/Deb_z/V10%252520wrx%252520sti/DSC01705.jpg&w=1023&h=682&ei=oeGVUZeuMcbgkgWsq4H4Cw&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:5,s:0,i:119&iact=rc&dur=371&page=1&tbnh=180&tbnw=244&start=0&ndsp=16&tx=99&ty=82
  6. yeah I told him as much but he is flatly refusing to go any louder, stock sti\'s are not exactly quiet as is so I can understand where he is coming from I guess. I imagine it would help boost spool a little quicker too would it not?
  7. A mate of mine up north just brought a new car (V8 sti), I know what a bastard right? am very jealous. Anyway he is getting its ecu remapped for more power but was also suggesting removing the catalytic converters in the exhaust and replacing them with steel sections of pipe. Reason for this over a full exhaust is that he doesn\'t want to make it more noisy if possible. Do you guys reckon this would liberate more power or not?
  8. ok fair enough not to make generalisations but it is accurate to say IF your V7upwards has DCCD controls then it DOES have a front LSD. Only the viscous non DCCD have open diff but not ALL of the Viscous are open front diff.
  9. No I mean I am saying thats what the SDPA link seems to say, go to v7 or v8 jdm and it says "viscous center diff" instead of DCCD and then open diff. All the ones that say DCCD instead of "viscous 4kg center" seem to have a front LSD. seriously, have a look for yourself
  10. From what I read on the thread suggested in the newer GD models only the non DCCD model have an open front diff. Which makes me think its the singapore spec more than a JDM spec? what are your thoughts guys?
  11. seriously?> the LSD was optional on a JDM v8/9/10 STI? I find that hard to believe.
  12. Hey does anyone know which models of sti got front LSD\'s? I am fairly sure the version 7 on-wards got them but not 100% as I know that some early evo\'s (RS) models got a front LSD I believe so I thought perhaps some RA\'s might have as well or maybe it was an option?
  13. +1 do not believe a stock VF series could get anywhere near that sort of power. Also 32psi. wowzers...... Not saying he is lieing, just that must have been a modded VF"series" turbo I am sure Steve Murch could murchify a VF to 280kw easy enough tho
  14. are the stock brembo discs damaged/worn out?
  15. also in terms of tuning, yeah the only people I would trust in the south island would be NZ EFI since I know they take advise on their subaru tuning from Andre at STM who is probably one of the guru\'s of subaru tuning in NZ. Also if you do replace the factory intake/filter remember subies are thought to prefer a dry filter element (not oiled) so K&N is a no no, basically you have to go for an HKS, cosworth or I think ZEROsports item. (The oiled ones can mess up the air flow sensors and make your car run rich/lean/blow up)
  16. HKS also do a full system that is very high quality through redline performance or STM in wellington. The HKS system is a full stainless and lasts decades
  17. haha well we can all agree with that then, my bad I must have skim read what you wrote too
  18. FUnkytown I am sure all companies try to present their products in favorable light but if you go onto scoobynet (UK\'s main subaru site) you will see many of them have used these turbos with good results. There are many options out there, I simply think this is one worth considering, no chill needed, just don\'t like the idea of a product being labled as bad or mis-represented simply because most are these days.
  19. did you know those results are not actually from their own testing but rather from a customer. He did all the testing himself and they simply asked him if they could use his data, also why do you say they are from a 2.5, I can assure you they are from a JDM 2liter sti just like ours so the results should be directly comparable and worth considering
  20. oh there we go i dont have too.. its listed in the link you sent. "Garrett “Ballistic Concepts” dual ball bearing CHRA," They must be good then :P all I am saying is the results from them seem to speak for themselves, bolt on (which I don\'t think any garret are) and published results showing good spool/power making characteristics. TBH best option is probably just to buy a turbo off Steve Murch also what makes you think they are using a 2.5ltr on those graphs?
  21. I am sure you are about to tell me
  22. Have you thought about going with one of the UK made turbos instead of the Garret or Tomei? they are in the 2-2.5k price range and there are litterally dozens of guys on the UK subaru sites who have used them and love them. They offer huge power upgrades with almost 0 loss of spool. http://www.turbodynamics.co.uk/news/news-archive/2011/april-2011/billet-compressor-wheel-review/ http://www.turbodynamics.co.uk/shop/mdx555450-subaru-impreza-hybrid-turbocharger-450-bhp-p-4202.html I have followed the development of these turbos for several years as I have a few mates over there and they just love them. The LM400 offers an extra 60hp ATW over a stock VF series with the exact same spool and the LM450 version offers an extra 100hp ATW over stock with the better spool than the VF22. They also bolt straight up with no need to buy a new manifold like the Garret ones and because they were all designed for JDM rather than UK spec cars there are no compatability issues with them on NZ cars. You can also buy them through Rodger Clark motorsport whose parts have been used on a few of the Clubsubs race cars http://www.rogerclarkmotorsport.co.uk/shop.asp?catsLevel=100
  23. I would use Torque performance or st-hitec
