  1. I have always had a trailer for my racing, although the rally car is the only car ive ever raced that is actually road legal so its a bit different haha, but yeah just have myself setup with trailer, prado and tow the rally car.

the rally car is also not a nice car to drive slowly or at cruise with clutch and the noise so much rather cruise to the event, do the skids, and if anything breaks you just throw it on the trailer, cruise home and fix it another day haha.

Depends on what your trying to do, if you just want to do some skids in a daily at a trackday id say the odds are good enough to deal with a breakage or otherwise if it happens. if you going to a rallysprint or full on racing the car then your pretty close to the limits so doesnt take much to make it undriveable

What do you want to use the diff for though? As it is only really of benefit if you are going racing.. On a street car I believe you wouldn't get value for money.

If you don't want to buy new, you can get the factory R160 plate one from an RA, although I think they are pretty rare and if memory serves me right, only come in 3.9 ratio. As Loren has mentioned for the R180 factory plate LSD, isn't as aggressive as aftermarket, but still better than sh*tty viscous and I would expect the R160 one would be the same.

Otherwise, try calling workshops that work on rally/race cars and see if you can find someone with one they are willing to sell.

I run a KAZZ front diff which is same thing different manufacturer. it pops and bangs and brilliant for rallying, but agree is fairly aggressive for street use. http://www.kaazusa.com/ its cheaper than the cusco im pretty sure, there are a couple of NZ distributors that can get them from what i know, i got mine with the rally car so not 100 sure :)

In the rear i run the factory r160 plate style diff, if i jack the car up and turn one wheel forwards the other 3 all turn forwards so everything is pretty tight haha. I have 4.1 rear plate diff, plus a spare that is 4.1(not selling sorry) so not sure if i just have 2 that happen to be swapped or if you can get them in 4.1 factory, but i had a 3.9 ages ago that i sold so they are arround just have to keep your eyes open

givin the comp wheel a wiggle doesnt really tell you about the condition of the exhaust seal

if the seal has failed could i tell if i take the turbo off?

guessing i need to rip the turbo off and inspect, and a compression test will point me towards what may have failed

Pcasht had similar prob on speedway circuit. Because lots of g and same corner everything was pumping out oil out of Rh breather. We lost 2.5l in 5-10mins

Was very smoky and light grey colour.

did he damage the engine or did it just get smokey? did it clear later on?

Yeah thinking heads... td05 upgrade time? Lol

hmmm cock thats not really what i was hoping it was. i have a TD05 spare that im all setup to put in, but turbo doesnt feel sloppy enough be causing the issue.

it was at the end of 2 races that were fairly long each so im picking the engine was quite hot...

  7. Evening team,

Just after some guidance with our Speedway Legacy,

last time we raced it on the last race it lost a bit of power and started pumping white smoke out the exhaust

I assumed it was the turbo(TD04) but I have taken the front of it off and the shaft doesn't have any play in in, could it still be the turbo or is possibly more serious.....

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

    Good old fuel surge?

I used to have an odd issue with the Possumlink at trackdays, where it would go into a "safe mode" after half a lap then come right after another or two. Never figured that one out.

But if your using a factory fuel tank and pickup for the pump (and no surge tank), it's good old fuel surge. Mine would surge even with over half a tank of fuel.

has surge tank usually, feels very much like fuel surge, but was happening with the tank, without the tank etc. ive replaced lift pump to make sure the pump sure tank is getting enough fuel, but this is why i want the guage, so i can see the pressure drop to confirm or if its cutting with no pressure drop then its something else....

this fault was very strange, does seem to be load related as went the whole way up ashley forest no drama on the last run, but then cut out after the dipper and after the finish.

im rewiring for dedicated feeds for the in tank and external pumps, i have a laptop to log all the stuff off the ECU to see if i can see an error with any sensors like a dodgy TPS or something, so the only thing i cant see is the fuel presure. im hoping the new lift pump and wiring will solve

What sort of gauges have you looked at?

I reckon an a/f ratio gauge would be more useful (as an "oh look, the #*&&$ has hit the fan already) if you want something for the left seat driver to entertain themselves with. Something like the ngk or innovate gauges?

Im having issues with the car cutting out intermittently so im trying to use it for fault finding, see if the pressure is dropping causing the car to cut out, or if the car cuts but i still have pressure i can look else-ware. i have a laptop coming to hookup to the possum-link during runs to log what is going on to see if i can see a sensor or something that is dieing, but need to know if fuel pressure is there to start with :)

  10.  Koom']Hook up a sensor to the ecu?

You shouldn't be worrying about gauges when your rallying anyway. Safer to leave that to the electrickery wizards in the ecu imo.

haha yeah thats why its going in front of the ballast seat, err sorry co-driver ;)

i would hook it to the ECU however i run a possum link so dont think i have any extra inputs or anything

Chat to Tony at RDL perforamance in Hornby, he has almost finished the setup on my track car..Should have it running before Koom :D

do you know what you ran into the cab at all?

  11. G1 possum link question for ya gotasuby,

I have got a seriallink now, had a wee look and all the sensors seem to be behaving although i haven't taken it for a blat to load it up, but i was wondering if i could start logging on the ECU then come back and download it, or do i have to leave a PC attached for logging?

I've got a wagon bumper on my gc, exactly the same, the v2 had a different style bumper to the later v5's etc but it's only a cosmetic difference with a defined "bumper" strip on the early bumpers. the later style bumpers look a little nicer IMO but any gc\gf bumper will fit any gc\gf in my experiance

This, i took a bumper off a GF for my GC and fits perfectly, so just need to match the version, i think 1 and 2 are the same, then changes for 3 etc.

i have a v3 white bumper here just needs a small repair on one side where previous owners wheel damaged it, can have it dirt cheep, will post a pic if your interested

  13. Hey team,

im a bit confused, im just setting up the handbrake in the new rally car from the old one, and the old one has 1 rear line blocked, this worked in the old car, so i assume i put both fronts on 1 section and the 2 rears(through 1 line now) on the other and block the spare off?

    Cheers

Palmside used to do them too

    /quote]

I don\'t know for sure, but seeing as how incestuous the rally fraternity is down here, I bet Palmside supply cages that have been pre-bent by Dave.

yup, lots of cage builder use prebent hoop and laterals by dave, mine in but got done by another builder, have a mate that works at another and all theres is as well

  15.  Koom said:

That\'s the name. Couldn\'t remember what his last name was.

It\'s spelt McCahon btw. Dave McCahon from Racecraft Engineering.

    http://m.finda.co.nz/business/listing/4pnlrl/racecraft-engineering/

But I\'ve only ever used un-scalloped kits from him.

yup dave supplys the hoops and laterals pre bent, supplys to alot of cage builders nation wide as well so will just need to supply your chassis code and away you go. but not notched, and youll still have to notch all your strait pipes

  16. Id Replace it, cheap insurance if the shards are still in there, youd kick yourself if there were shards and it killed your new engine

get a second hand one and clean and clean that one, throw up a wanted add someone will have one floating round from a engine swap or whatever

thats for cusco diffs though nick..

from memory the Subaru factory ones are sealed up.

Fwiw. hes brough the v2 sti ra one i sold to Roo :) and is asking about that diff specfically

confusing desu. didn\'t you have your r160 mech re-shimmed? how are they to do that if its sealed? i think you\'ll find the basic design of a mechanical clutch diff similar enough that the cusco info is a useful example. left/right differential torque through the spider/pinion gears rotates the cross-shaft. depending on the cam angle of the cross-shaft and the groove you end up with expanding pressure on the clutches. in my previous post you can clearly see the two different set of grooves for 1.5 and 2 way setup

    [quote name='speedfreak said:

    ..

on a side note the other diff is the a way of telling if its 1 way, 1.5 or 2 way easily?

    ..

    /quote]

you can see cross-shaft setup through holes in the diff casing, but no harm disassembling for fun

    waydiff.jpg

yeah i assume the mechanism works the same, just need to disassemble to find out, the second pic is all i can see of the split so cant really see the shapeof the grove

  18. Lol, funny story, the diff in the second pic i already owned, so it looks like i have 2 plate lsd now, one is a 4.1 and the one i just got is a 3.9.

Should have opened it up first lol

So i now have 3plates includin the one in the rally car, plus 2 vsld the 4.44 woll go on the speedway car, plus 3 vsld with thr stub axles poking out, hmm deff time for a garage cleanout....
