  1. Yeah, thats the one. On or off. Not great for passenger comfort. Can counter-act it by clutching everytime I change speed, but thats a full lower body workout. I hear all those new-car tricks (sequential inj shutoff, etc) but this is an aged engine thing I think.
  2. This is a random question about something I've noticed in a lot of older engines... might take a bit to explain though... You drive a new car (manual), and everything feels tight. You accelerate, then take you foot off the gas, and the car gently stops accelerating and deaccelerates. You jump in your old pile-o-shite and try the same hardcore move, and you get a lurch as the engine goes from driving the car, to the car driving the engine. It starts deaccelerating, so you give it some gas. It lurches again, as the engine starts pushing the car again. I've noticed this with all 10 year old cars I've owned (Ford Laser, Mitsi GSR, and my current WRX). It must have a name or something. And more importantly it must be caused by something. Is it simply caused by the play in the drivetrain? (Gearbox, diff gears). Funny thing is, I did an engine oil change the other day, and for the first few weeks the problem almost went away! Now its back, but seems new oil has something to do with it. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? Hard to google this one, as I don't really know the right words to describe it. Chris.
  3. Hi, My stock (except for pod filter and bigbore) wrx is slowly getting annoying to drive. When its cold, just after starting, the engine automatically rev's slightly about 5 or six times then settles into a nice idle. Whats up with that? Then when driving while its cold, theres a subtle rythmic surging going on, most noticible when just cruising (not accelerating or deaccelerating). Its like driving through patches of water on the motorway... you feel the power being slightly taken away, then come back, at about 1 sec intervals. Its not a huge issue, but its definately there, and quite annoying. Obviously something is wrong, but like I said its subtle. Its not noticible when driving hard, just when cruising. When I first noticed it years ago, someone suggested it was the O2 sensor. I got a new one, but no change. Oh yeah, its coming up to 200,000km :-/ Anyway, thanks for any info! Chris
  4. An update... I unbolted the top sliding clamp, and whatdoyaknow it has a second slot which can be used to extend the reach of the top clamp. And for the bottom one, I bolted a piece of 2mm plate on. All sorted! Hope this helps any other WRX owner with Legacy cross-bars. Oh, and to unbolt the top clamp, theres obviously the main bolt, but also a small hidden screw under the rubber strip along the top.
  5. I'm in Auck. So the top clamp slides in and out about 20mm, with an slot hole for the bolt. But it doesn't reach far enough. Did you just make the slot longer? Ta.
  6. Not parallel? Thats plain stoopid! Yeah, relist, or make longer end bits. Thanks.
  7. Got a 97 wrx sports hatch thingy. Just bought some roof-rack cross bars on trademe (like these http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/32/105669932_full.jpg), which seemed to measure fine. They guy selling them had them on his Legacy. When I got the home, I discovered that the side bars (attached to the car) arn't parallel! So the rear X-bar fits ok, but the front one is too short. Does anyone know if this is normal with WRX's? Kinda annoying!
