hey man,
have done that to the same model as u
you can remove the cat and get a straight through turbo back exhaust
a tune really livens up the car.
Pm me and we can have a further chat

The justification in my case is that none of the tuners that have had a go on it can get it to do what it is supposed to. Some parameters can be changed but others when changed have no effect. Supposedly there is an issue with the def file for my ECU with the open source programs. Have also tried ECUEdit which didn't make things any better either.
If the ECU did as it should i’d happily stay stock.
what area you are in?
im in no way saying this has not been done before but just curious what was the issue they faced with the stock ecu specifically
we have done a fair few davcs legacy in that year range so should be something we can try out .. but then again somethings are not meat to be like 5 speeds and 300kw

Ah yeap, it was for a pre-face lift model. Subscribing to this thread!
Because Andy's ECU is all kinds of f..... and he is planning to go the hx35 way as well. And to be honest the factory ecu is only good for so much, link makes the tuning job so much easier and so much more consistent and also allows for fail safes to be in place.
i know of a 270kw BP legacy that had a similar turbo in not better.. on stock ecu
yep link does have a good feature set - agreed on that
still dont see the point of spending all that money and time making a link work when a properly tuned stock ecu will do the same sorta job.
we have done hx40 on stock ecu as an example..
not saying to not use link at all - just that questioning every mod is a good way of making sure you get the best items in place and nothing thats not needed... so more like whats the actual justification for the link here?
-
why not use the remapped stock ecu fully for the setup - sorry not up to speed with the build but unless you have some huge power needs that cant be controlled, the stock ecu' s seem pretty good these days...
-
great!
ok ask them if they have that in there (can be done in open source so with the expensive ecutek they would have that availble free i would think... )

How would you go about doing this bro? Seems like the best option
little bit of rewiring a few sensors in and then setting some custom table limits in the ecu
hmm..it may already be in the ecutek actually (i dont have ecutek so cant confirm but ask pbms and they can tell if its there) - ask and update ok bro
(ur getting ecutek done ya?)

hey man,
Oil temperature - nope
Oil pressure - is more like a switch action for warning light
Fuel pressure - nope
its possible to use the oil pressure switch perhaps as a failsafe and have some logic on it
but there are ways you can get a fail safe triggered in the stock ecu but will need to put aftermarket fuel pressure and oil temp sensor

as long as u dont use euromarque for the inspection - they do a shittier job than a blind racoon

what he said above
a tune makes the best of the setup
you can message them on their website: https://www.subtech.co.nz/

yeah ive been searching but man are they expensive lol i will get there one day haha
i live in samoa...so thats the hassle for me. i usually get family to bring parts over for me from nz
hey man
you can remove the stock downpipe and then you can smash the cat out from the downpipe
that might be the cheapest option..
or subtech here have a downpipe you can buy

put a nice turboback exhaust for better performance gains
what area are you in?
- 1
-
what he said above..
cheapest way would be to get someone to hack in a pipe in from the up pipes - but really not going to gain any performance benefit unless its done correctly and with the stock turbo, the noise may be the only gain..

wow bro, these kind of things are appealing (getting decent power without spending extreme cash). what was the intake temps like after a few boosts on that one. any heat soak to report? from most logs i seen and in my own experience, temps get quite excessive with the top mount, though my own top mount was not stock so larger size would have made it more prominent to this issue.
i work the intercooler sprayer very hard
and yep after a few runs the heat soak does happen but with good cooling it kinda is ok (as long as you are not on the boost all the time)
front mount is the best

The cheapest per kw option is probably still my twisted setup And then you're T3 flange on the uppipe and if you wanted to change turbos down the track all you have to do is modify the downpipe to suit, will support anything up to about GT35 frame so somewhere in the realms of 450-500wkw.
agreed to what he said above .. not a bad option at all

Yeah so will have to locate all the parts such a difficult decision as to which way to go. i am in no rush just going to order bit by bit as we go. will your car be at flat nats?
Yeah i would love 250 - 280kw i have 208kw at the moment so more would be great! I am just about to have my sump baffled before flat nats and order my HDI front mount kit then will look to do the turbo at start of 2019 and will most likely decap my injectors.
Bolt on would be ideal to save cost that I can put into handling modifications but if twisted is the best way to go and I am throwing my money in the rubbish with stock location maybe I should hold off.
this is exactly what i did for a v7sti:
1) tomei turbo from redline
2) bolt on installation setup
3) id1000 or similar or decap injectors (cheap option)
4) nice fuel pump (dw200 at the least)
5) tuned it for 275kw on top mount
easy answer thats proven to have run well
i would suggest u get a nice oil catch can setup as well while at it
this is just one tried and tested option .. im sure there are lots others and with varying cost..
if you replace the above turbo with a td05/20g from redline then expect about 240kw as have done that combo as well....
all this was on 98 pump gas

I would like to stick with BP 98 at the moment due to the availability of it. I will drive my car on the odd occasion to work if my daily needs maintenance etc so not having to top it up with a gas can would be ideal ha ha.
and the goal is 275kw ya?
do you want bolt on options?
- 1
-
the 260kw is a very easy goal to get to with just a few right components
are you wanting to use 98 o e85 that could be the deciding factor...

Yeah I know a V7 sti with a Tomei turbo that is at 275ish kw on 98 and 305kw on e85 so the turbos are quite good by the seems the only thing I wonder is for the price of them you could spend a few hundred more and get something amazing
we maybe referring to the same car ..or different lol..
either way yep - they are not cheap turbos..
i was surprised on how well it responded to boost but anyway for that $ ballpark you are right you can get higher .. 1.5XTR or even fp red and i think AMR turbos are around there...

What about a certain young chap that put one in his 17 STI without a proper tune and promptly farked the CHRA. With the only conclusion from his builder being that the BOV was too small and wasn’t venting enough to keep the compressor from stalling when lifting off. Pretty sure he was still on low boost since the tune wasn’t complete too.
Hardly sounds like a reliable turbo for the cost of them.
is this for the tomei turbo? - i dont knwo of any such setup/issue - who was it that did this to a 17sti?
sounds like BS to me for the bov being too small for low boost but then again who knows.... more like perhaps oiling issue??
how small is a too small bov tho?
-
another option is the tomei turbo thats 100% bolt on as we did that to a GDB sti
made 275kw on stock intercooler and that was being super safe

When you are talking of Chinese turbos are you speaking of a particular brand? are they still quite laggy?
The Holset would look nice haha! you are rite though i am nervous to buy a turbo like a holset that pumps out big power but has big lag and find i dont like driving it any more.
chinese i mean like from redline or luxury sports or the trademe ones..
no particular brand - i have tried and tuned a few of them
perhaps the redline one was kinda the best of them..
lag - yes was added lag for sure but the top end was wayy more solid then a vf30
its a cheap investment - try it and you can always decide from there to take a plunge for bigger or not.
as @boon said - use ur gears and u will be fine
drop a gear or 2 when you need to
also with the correct tune the bigger turbo can be made to spool well and not be as bad
- 1
-
just fuel for thought -
with the chinese td05/6-20g we get 240kw-250kw
pulls really well and is a cheap enough to get
with the Chinese ones you find that they last maybe 1.5 - 2 years before they start a slow leak... (depending how hard you use it)
options at that point are to either get another new turbo
or
rebuild kits off ebay are cheap to do (depending how early you catch it)
not saying to get chinese units but just a very cost effective option in case you want to see if a bigger turbo is your thing before investing lots ...
Also - we have run 11.7@ meremere tracks in a wrx non sti v8 with a chinese turbo so they do have some grunt on them...
PS . the holset option will look nice in the engine bay thats for sure!!

-
will be good to see what you get form this
i assume its a stock location setup?
we went with a twisted td06 for 300kw
depending on price i would agree with you to be leaning towards the pbms vs a kinugawa

-
depending how its mapped, maybe the cold ruining was not sorted as there are fuel compensations that need to apply in the cold
as a test you can do a quick unplug of the 02 and do a cold start and see if there is a noticeable difference
but yea the headers have the main o2 sensor and its not uncommon for it to die and cause fuel inconsistancy

05 WRX STI STRAIGHT PIPE Questions
in General Vehicle Discussion
Posted
need to know what all is on the car and what all is planned as part of the ball of mods
plus some people prefer different things (power, spool, loud noises...) - no single answer fits all hence we always do custom maps only ..
and agreed with Boon - straight pipe will be LOUD and announce your car when you enter your street ... and needs a wof time plan as well cos will be above the DB reading if they test
