Huh? 45000kms... is ridiculously low for these motors.

Between myself and my father's BPE's we have a combined 350000kms (both around 175000) and no issues with the solenoids, or timing, on either car.

There's a lot of these around with 200000+kms and no issues.

Before you go and replace the solenoids, have a real good look to make sure the filter hasn't fallen out the bottom of the banjo and got wedged in there.

A workshop with a proper SSM should be able to switch on the solenoids individually and monitor the associated cam advance; it could be a sensor issue as well.

Hmm yeah that's what I thought too, I definitely checked the banjos properly and there is nothing there..

Do you know if it has had the gauze filters removed from the AVCS oil feeds?

yes i checked these they are both removed

I would get the timing adjust since you are suffering on mileage.

Can you send me a log?

Usually at this age, the AVCS solenoid needs changing. I need to see whats happening.

yeah i think now the fuel economy is ok i just didn't know what to expect for this car

sorry i dont have acess to any logs unfortunately

yes well after looking on the net it looks as though most people have determined that replacing the acvs solenoid fixes this issue, i have found subarugenuineparts.com is the cheapest for the solenoids they charge 120nzd where as to get them here in nz it costs 350nzd for one

so i think i will replace both solenoids, although iam surprised at 46ks they need replacing?

Here you go.. I don't think it looks too bad with just the driver seat being recaro.. from the outside its not really that obvious as seat is black in the standard subaru tints make it harder to see at a glance

    COMBINED.jpg

Very nice - is that an SR7 Recaro? and did you purchase this seat from someone in Nelson?

  5. Just did this on Saturday, and yes it definitely gives it a more throatier sound - I love it! also can anyone comment on the mini milk bottle on the intake hose? I notice there is one on there as well what i want to do is get a replacement intake hose - anyone know where I can get one of these?

I have done on my car but only for a nicer noise, haven't noticed any power change. like willisnz says, without a tune you wont get more power, I think this is the same as if you add an exhaust/intake etc.

I would just take it off and see if you like the noise or not, its pretty easy to do (on my car anyway)

Thanks for the info, did you block the hole off or just leave it?

  7. Okay so on the way to work this morning the CEL came on again it threw two codes this time P0011 Camshaft Position 'A' Timing Over Advance or Performance Bank 1

and P0021  Camshaft Position 'A' Timing Over Advance or Performance Bank 2

I already had the car go to Subaru to check this out and they couldn't really fault it one of their suggestions was that it had incorrect oil in it so they changed it for me, the mechanic there was adamant that it wasn't the ACVS Solenoid

meanwhile I got charged $350 for them to check it out and change the oil!

    Can someone please help?

dude! right now it is possible for your to purchase a BC5 in average condition off trademe!

you probably thinking "omigeeed!" because they are seldom for sale in manual sedan and there are currently 2 on trademe right now! and they are both reasonably priced!

(there is a 3rd for sale on trademe for 11,000 if you want to spend and extra 7k for hardly any reason at all!)

aside from the beauty of the BC5 there is also the obvious "perks" of

    - BOXER Intercooler Turbo Full Time 4WD

    - AMAZING handling with the factory suspension!

    - you will be admired by all passersby when they hear that original EJ20G deep SUBARU rumble cruising past them

    - heavey footed? crash often? no need to worry about expensive parts here!

    - ALOT of the subaru single turbo engines/parts which superceed the RS BC5 can be used as upgrades! no more pouring your cash into the rubbish with new expensive parts that arnt very cool!

    -  Car "check engine" light comming on while driving? the BC5 RS was the FIRST subaru EVER to have the feature of the simple "unplug" - you can diagnose the fault using on board diagnostics and once your satisfied, you can unplug the sensor for it and the car will keep going like nothings wrong!

    Dont delay

    Choose BC5 Today!

Haha you sound like a Subaru Salesman

  9. I would definitely recommend a 3.0r 6MT and I say this as my first car was a 1995 Legacy GT then went to a 2001 GTB E-tune, then a 2007 Legacy B4 6MT then a 2000 WRX STi now a 2006 Legacy 3.0R 6MT

And through all these cars my best choice was by far the 3.0R its so much more refined than turbo, no you dont get the turbo rush, but no cambelt and no head gasket issues is a good bonus

In saying this though I loved my GTB E-tune BH Wagon only thing about it was i had detonation issues even on 98 octane but I guess this could have been addressed with a reflash

As other people have said its really what you are using your car for

  10. I have installled some Recaro SR4 Seats into my 2006 Legacy with NZKW base and sliders, everything fits ok except when you move the seat back to the rear position it the last 10 clicks wont lock into place? it locks into my driving position, but its not gonna pass a wof like it is , and if a taller person drives my car they are going to have trouble!.

    Any Ideas?

  11. thanks that's good to know only thing is the guy at NZKW said that the bracket that you bolt the seatbelt stalk to on the NZKW rail would need a cert?

I dont think there is anywhere on the seat to mount it to like the factory seats

I have a recaro street racing seat on recaro 'legacy model' rails in Legacy '06 GT and been through at VTNZ with no issues.  Drivers seat is recaro and the passenger is still factory, neither have bags.  I think the main thing is the seat belt clip has to be fixed

keen to see a pic of the seat

  12. Okay so I have bought some very tidy Recaro SR4s to go into my 2006 Legacy 3.0R, I will be using NZKW rails and Sliders and the current seats are not air bagged - will i need a cert or anything?

Fair enough. I'm not in any particular hurry. I will probably do handling and tune first.

Probably still worth gathering a list of people that might be interested and seeing if they will do us a deal.

Definitely I'm in the same boat, I'm wanting to get some Recaro Seats installed first as well, looks like that's gonna cost me a bit too

Because I left the rest of the system fairly stock it wasn't much louder. It sounds different, but not really louder.

This is what it sounded like with a set of after market mufflers. Not really to my liking so I went back to stock. Well I went to a set of GT mufflers which are internally the same, just with a different tip

very keen think ill grab some raptor headers, are they direct bolt up?

would i get the same gains as you if i left the cats and just did the headers and an ecu remap? mine is also the 3.0r 6spd manual

  15. 12 hours ago, Decap said:

    1. Upgrade the headers

    2. Knock out all the cats in the system --> This one is a bit tricky because of the new laws around catalytic converters, which states that any car registered in NZ after 2010 that was manufactured after 1990 has to have a catalytic converter in the system. If you legacy was NZ new in 2006 then you can take all the cats out and still get a WOF.

If it was imported after 2010, then you'll have to do the less legal thing of finding someone to knock the guts out of all of your catalytic converters and leaving the empty cats in place so that it still looks like you've got them in the system to get your WOF. Best to cut them open, remove all the filling, then weld them shut again as opposed to knocking the guts out with a metal pole.

If you're not keen on doing this, then 1 high flow cat will suffice ($150 from Redline)

I found an image of the stock exhaust system that shows where all of the cats are below.

    3. Remove the mid system muffler (labelled number 24 in the image) and replace it with a resonator (you can get a 2.5" one from Redline for $60) as this muffler does NOTHING and removing the cats will increase the exhaust noise a little and putting this resonator in will deaden the sound again. If you prefer to use a high flow cat, use this instead of the resonator.

    4. Leave the stock mufflers in place. They do restrict flow a little bit, but not much and they kill a hell of a lot of noise. Pic below

Headers + all other work should cost you less than $1,500 to do. Then you can get onto the Romraider forums and research tuning unless you want to shell out another $1,000+ to have it dyno tuned or find someone to reflash your ECU for less

This should help with another 20 - 30kw and make the car feel a fair bit more torquey (I had a tuned 30R with exhaust done at one stage and my wife had an untuned one and the difference was quite noticeable).
