  1. I think there is more to this story than just that, (but I might be wrong). Also that car has done the rounds, have seen it up for sale several times so I would be wary anyway.
  2. yeah that part can\'t be argued evo engines are generally more robust than sti engines. one exception is the evo 4 engine, been told these are not great.

  4. most chips remap the ignition timing, fueling and boost levels, this will increase power, HOWEVER the chips are created based on a set of factory parameters. Now why is this a problem> well most cars are never going to always be at the exact state of tune that they were when they left the factory, maybe the fueling is slightly off because the pump or injector is slightly blocked, maybe the ignition is not quite right. That means that the CHIP is making changes to the way your engine runs based on a set of assumptions that very well may have changed and therefore the chip might indeed be doing your engine some real harm. Reflashing on the other hand is MUCH safer as it makes the same sort of changes BUT it makes these changes AFTER the actual state of the engine has been established so that any changes to the tune are safe.
  5. nice condition evo 7 18-20k stock nice condition v7 sti 12-14k stock reason for difference stock vs stock evo7 more powerful and handles better than v7sti sti + 3k spent on engine and handling mods = still less than stock evo 7 v7sti with 3k spent on it = spank the evo7 HARD...... thats the way I see it anyway. If you set money aside from it tho then its a completely different story.
  6. one of the great things about the V7 sti is you spend 2k on zaust and ecu and panel filter and then maybe 600 on anti lift kit and rear sway bar and BAM they are a totally different car capable of destroying any factory sti
  7. Take it to someone reputable such as NZ EFI and it will be around 600-1000 I believe. They seriously know their stuff and have done many (not saying that others don\'t though).
  8. yeah now I am starting to wonder which one it was.... I still can remember the one sentence really clearly saying something along the lines off "we managed a best 0-100 time of 6 flat but without serious clutch abuse the car was easily into the 7 second zone"... that sentence always stuck in my brain because it seemed so bad for a car which I had worshiped as a teenager and the picture of the KW curve from the dyno which was really uneven, lots of peaks and valleys and then the post tune curve being much smoother.... I wonder who it could have been? Could have been Wheels but aren\'t they Australian anyway? On another note a stock STI doing a 12.5 is simply nuts when you think about it, that\'s R34 GTR quick.

My apologies I was guessing at the year that I read it, you are quite right, we did;t get them until 2001, I simply assumed I would have read it in 2000 as that is when the car was released in Japan, and I remember it definitely being a stock V7sti not the special edition RA which many believe is to this day the fastest stock sti EVER down the 1/4mile, have even seen a BMI video that shows one knocking out a mid 12 (although I think it was a spec C ra). Makes the current sti look pretty slow lol

I remember reading the original NZ autocar review of the V7 STI back in 2000 They remarked that it was much more solid feeling than previous cars, much more comfortable and had an amazingly nice positive gearbox One thing they did say though was the factory ECU tune was very bad, They dynoed it and it only made 165kw atw which is less than a stock v6 sti (170-180ATW) and the v8 (180-190kw atw) However they also remarked that after a remap was done (in that instance by torque performance) and a turbo back exhaust was installed (was an NZ made system, unsure of brand) it increased power to 200kw atw with the potential for slightly more with a free flowing intake and larger fuel pump. Handling wise there is a great article on whitelines website which shows the effect of a white line antilift kit and rear sway bar taking something like 3 seconds off a lap around a circuit and made it much more precise and tight feeling on the road. Biggest thing they said was that the factory ecu map was really bad as it tended to bog off the line and unless it was launched hard it only managed low 7\'s to 100kph. When launched properly they managed a best of 6 flat (about 2/3 of a second slower than the V6 and V8 sti) So I would say in totally stock form it would be made a meal of by even a stock v5,6 and definitely 8 but with just a couple grand spent on ecu tune and exhaust and 500 bucks for a rear sway bar and antilift kit the car was literally transformed. So in essence if you are totally committed or somehow restricted to keeping it totally stock I would not buy a V7sti if you are concerned about how it might compare to other models BUT if you are willing to mod it very slightly you will soon have hugely fast tight handling car that even including the cost of mods will embarrass a stock V8sti for less money. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or would like to some help finding a reputable company to help you modify or tune your car Lunchie One final point and I only mention this because I am getting older and as such concerned about the safety of family and friends that ride in my cars, the V6 and older sti models only received a 2/5 star safety rating where as the v7-10 all got 4/5 star and the current V11 hatch from 2007 on wards is a full 5 star car. Still even that must be taken with a grain of salt as the v4,5,6 cars do have a very strong metal strip that runs through the front and side pillars of the car which many fire fighters have commented on as being extremely strong and requiring the jaws of life to cut through.
  12. worst case scenario just get the chassis number and find a friendly subaru dealer and ask him to check which turbo it has. If its VF then your in business
  13. I know all the NZ new 2009 models onwards are, not sure about the JDM, just drive it, you will feel it pretty quick lol

Okay I have gone down this path before looking at them too, bout a year ago before I ticked up a big set of B&W speakers and an amp instead Right so there were 2 different version produced between 2007-2009. It doesn\'t actually make that much difference if you go NZ new or JDM as both versions had similar good and bad points. The main thing to realize is that the original 2007-mid2008 wrx was not a WRX in either the JDM or NZ new model. It was not meant to be a wrx in either model, it was basically a response to the fact that in 2005 several new models emerged onto the small performance car market and started to toast the old "wrx" in the sales charts. These cars (just for those that care) were the new MKV golf gti, the new focus ST (branded XR5 in nz) which used a 2.5volvo engine and one of the best chassis in the market and then finally the new generation of renault meganes which didnt suck for once. These three models absolutely creamed the V9,10 shape wrx in the european market sales charts and with good reason, they were fast, fun and much more modern looking/feeling. So subaru responded with a full change of idea for the WRX which was the S-GT. It was designed to be more of a hot hatch than a genuine mini-wrc car. As many of your know this didn\'t work at all. Subaru was not able to produce a car that anywhere near the refinement levels of the European rivals and the old WRX fans hated how soft the new wrx was. Time and time again I saw it put up against others in Motor and Autocar etc and the subie was just way too soft and much slower than old wrx\'s. So Subaru decided to s*** a brick. They did a complete 180 and basically took the springs, shocks, sway bars and turbo from the the STI model (which was also said to be way too soft in many markets (not the JDM version tho at least). So The S-GT changed from late 2008 to a genuine WRX with changes in HP From 230 to around 280 (thanks to the same turbo the STI was using). The handling was completely changed and the new wrx was finally the car traditional fans will remember. So to put things lightly. The 2007-mid2008 wrx is a soft hot hatch (not bad just very different to the old wrx we grew up with). From late 2008 onwards it got all the STI goodies, turbo, shocks, etc etc and was a totally different car.   15. Hmmm well I am willing to concede that the V1-3 NZ new wrxs may have been detuned slightly but having driven several V4+ wrxs I can say for certain they go as well as the jdm
  16. NZ new GC chassis wrx\'s were the exact same as normal JDM ones (engine wise). Two of my good mates Dads both sold them new, One of them at Southern Motor court in Dunedin and another in Christchurch at the subie dealer. Both say they remember the NZ press into and specs sheets listing the first 1993 wrx at 240HP and they went up a small amount each year until the v4 wrx which was rated at 280(ps) My understanding is that the UK spec cars were actually closer to singapore spec from what I have read in the UK forums but I can assure you the NZ cars were full fat. A mate of mine owned a lovely NZ new V4 wrx coupe (not RA or STI just WRX) and it laid down 168kw atw with stock everything.
  17. that is wrong, the UK got COMPLETELY different cars to NZ NEW. NZ new got the same power as JDM up until the v7 wrx.
  18. V8 wrx is a pretty capable handling machine in stock form. Also while I can respect everyone has a different thing they like I don\'t think I could own a chopped up car.
  19. 20-25k for sti 2002-2005 10-14k for wrx 2002-2005 So nar, think I would stick with the WRX for now. STI\'s are amazing but you gotta work within your means.

I spoke with one of STM\'s tuners bout the blobeye 2ltr v8 non-sti wrx (2002-2005) as I am thinking about getting one due to the fact that I just find the normal sti too "in your face" now that I am starting to get a wee bit older. So I asked him what he would do and he said, intake, turbo back exhaust and remap. This was the dyno graph he provided of one that had those mods done on it. Anyway I thought I would get your input on what you guys thought about that as a daily driver and in terms of the stock wrx engine supporting that power. So convert that to engine power 336 x 1.2 = 403NM 250x 1.2 = 300hp Also what I wanted to know is whether there are any handling suspension mods that these wrxs really respond well to or simply should be done? I want to create nice hatchback wrx that is about at quick as a stock sti in a straight line and maybe improve the handling, what do you guys think?

  23. what I was actually getting at more was whether mods should be allowed to delete or warn/ban people for commenting on someones ad, eg "hey nice car but i think X price is too much maybe X-X would be more reasonable based on what I have seen others sell for" I see that sort of a post as constructive but obviously there are some that will just say "what a s*** price, rip off etc" this is bad behavior and should not be allowed but I am unsure about even constructive suggestions that price is too high/low etc..... hmmm its a tough one
