  1. Nothing you can do - best option is to suck it up and just pay for it yourself.

You'd have next to no chance of success through the small claims court. Even if you did, it's almost impossible to make them pay. I also doubt any judge would award you a full refund given the cost to remedy is relatively minor, by the time you tried to enforce the debt through a third party agency, you'd only be slightly better off than you are now... that would all rely on actually getting a favourable judgement.

One of the risks of a private sale/purchase.

  2. Hi all,

Turns out the u-joints on my driveshaft are seizing/notchy, causing the car to vibrate. I've been told that you cant service/replace just the joints so need to replace the whole shaft.

Can anyone tell me if the RA is the same as STI/WRX driveshaft? New from Subaru is around $1,800 so definitely keen to avoid.

Depends on your budget. Cheap? Look for a muffler that doesn't have a crazy big diameter tip. $$$? Maybe get another resonator or go from say 3" to 2.75" or 2.5" at a certain point. IIRC I went from a 4" single exit STI unit on my gf8 to no tip due to it rusting out, then a dual 3.5" or 3.25" exit eBay muffler and it drones less but still sounds nice.

Look for an oval shaped muffler as opposed to a round one. One with more baffles will muffle better imo.

Happy to spend $$$ on something decent, and would prefer a full system so i can keep the factory exhaust in one piece for re-sale etc.

  4. A version 3 STI RA in completely stock condition sold for $20k a week to two ago on trademe. People will pay good money for the right car. Plenty of STIs around, very few in tidy, original condition with full service history and receipts/invoices. Too many people claiming rebuilds but with absolutely no evidence.

  5. I picked the car up from Christchurch and drove it home. I would much rather travel a little further for the right car than settle for one closer to home... plus it makes for a good excuse to drive it.

More than happy for you to arrange for someone to come look on your behalf, I'm sure another forum member would be happy to do it... plus I dont know anyone on here so itd be an independent opinion.

I can (almost) guarantee you wont find a better, original RA in NZ. Never know what someone has tucked away in a garage somewhere.

Have every single piece of paper since it was imported, including pre-import inspection and every service for the last 10+ years.

  6. So my 97 STI RA is shaking under load when accelerating anywhere past 100kph. It's not violent, but is a 'shudder' and sounds like a low pitch drone coming from the rear diff or possibly the drive shaft. I have brand new tyres and wheels are balanced, the shaking stops as soon  as I take my foot off the gas and just coast. Theres absolutely so shaking below 100.

Who is the best Subaru mechanic in Wellington, particularly with early models. The car has always previously been serviced at a Winger shop in various parts of the country by previous owners so am willing to continue with them, unless someone has a better suggestion?
