  1. Ok, so the cambelt stripped, the thinking was maybe it didnt damage the motor, he was told the quickest and cheapest way to test was to simply replace the cambelt and tensioner and see if it ran ok. turns out the motor was damaged :-(
  2. He did service it, he\'s a fussy guy, he did it himself and used genuine parts.
  3. Cool thanks for the advice, no special tools or tricks when it comes to swapping motors? Also any advice on where to get a decent gasket set for a good price?
  4. Hey guys, my mates 2003 GT legacy cam belt tensioner went south and the cam belt stripped, he replaced the cam belt and tensioner in the hopes nothing was hurt in the motor, but now its making horrible noises, guessing a bent valve or similar. Im just after a bit of advice on what the best option is... 1)pull motor down and rebuild, or 2) buy 2nd hand motor. Hes wanting to do this as cheaply as possible as he was planning on selling the car anyway, hes pretty mechanical and I\'ve done my fair share of tinkering, he can get a 2nd hand motor for $1800 with 90,000kms and a 1 year warranty. I suspect a rebuild would need to be done by a garage, which means $$$$$. However an engine swap i think we could handle. Obviously the turbos, manifolds, alt etc would all need to be swapped over to the replacement motor and a gasket kit would be needed. How long would you expect it to take 3 semi mechanical men to swap out a motor? Any advices would be appreciated. Thanks Lee
  5. Mate if i was you i would save a little bit more and get a V8 Spec C 17in model. totally different car and damn good! worth the extra couple of grand you pay. I was looking at the V8 STI myself, did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people, and im glad i got the Spec C. I sold mine for 23k, it had 60,000 on the clock. This was a well cared for car (im 35 and no boy racer) with a FULL 3".
  6. Still looking for any info guys if you can help me out. any difference in rack length between WRX/STI years/models Cheers
  7. that would be appreciated. Can you post a link or sould i PM you?
  8. Hey guys, First up i dont currently own a Subaru, but i have had 3, Leg GT, Leg GTB and a Spec C V8 Im currently building a 1972 Valiant Charger, and im converting it to rack and pinion, i really like the steering in the subarus so ive decided to look at using a subaru rack, as luck has it the impreza racks are damn near the perfect length for my application and reducing bumpsteer. So im after a WRX or STI rack, i do actually have a 1999 WRX rack (so i was told) for mocking up and its a great fit, i would however like to use a later model, i believe the WRX and STI used the same rack from 1996 thru to 2002, so i need to know if an 03 or later WRX/STI rack is the same length as the earlier model. My 1999 rack is 650mm from the inner tierod pivot to inner tierod pivot. If anyone has any info on the later model rack it would be much appreciated. Heres a photo of where the measurement is from
