  1. No. It\'s nothing to do with the gearbox. In Aucks you can get the same signal from Bombays to all the way up North. You can\'t get this in Welli. I\'ve found Kenwood tuners to be pretty good - does yours support RDS?

FM radio signal in Welli is generally crap, and always has been; they have separate transmitters for the Hutt Valley & Wellington - the RDS display changes to reflect this: i.e. "The Sound 97.3 Hutt Valley", "The Sound 97.3 Wellington".

The only two stations with separate freq\'s are: Breeze 94.1 Wel, 98.5 Hutt and More FM 99.7 Wel, 95.3 Hut (if you listen to that crap) - they both support AF (Auto Freq), but this fails outside of Welli region. Classic hits used to have three transmitters on their old 90.0 freq, however they must have dropped one when they switched to 90.1 in favour of RDS radio text/song info support, it was one of the few stations you could get clearly almost everywhere.

Both Hauraki (93.3) and The Rock (96.5), you cannot drive from Upper Hutt to Wellington on SH2 without going scratchy, or fading out - then the stereo keeps auto-tuning trying to find a better signal; when there is none. However if you live on the SH1 side of Welli - this isn\'t an issue

Hauraki is one of the few stations that supports regional/auto tune; so one preset gets you 99.0 (AKL), 96.2 (WAI), 106.5 (CHCH), 93.3 (WEL) - this feature would be useful if they did it nationwide and with ALL stations.

FM is VHF RF comms, and is such is LOS (Line of Sight) transmission - hence it doesn\'t work with the hilly terrain. Other parts of the country don\'t seem to have this issue. Once they switch off the analogue TV signal - they may favour more FM transmitters to alleviate this...

I\'ve noticed it slightly worse in the new car, since it only has CD and radio, no ipod/bluetooth... I find myself listening to a lot of radio. The rear windscreen aerials don\'t seem to work as well as the old \'pop-up\' or A-pillar type styles. Also factory stereos are generally poor quality!

DAB/DAB+ digital radio, like they have in Aussie would definitely alleviate this issue. You wouldn\'t have to keep changing frequencies either for different regions.

A bit of boring Sunday morning dribble... I\'ve been playing with car stereos for over 10 years, and used RDS tuners for the last five or so; since the Kenwood KDC-MP6024. I\'ve also installed and fitted numerous systems for a mates car yard.

  2. Or a 480AB, runs my speakers and sub. DD 6.5" comps and 8" boxed sub. And still fits under the seat.

Pioneer DEH-X8550BT, I consider mid end (for Pioneer anyway), I\'ve never used below their 6 series. That was about $250 from Hyper (Akl) on special, delivered. I\'ve also used the older DEH-6450BT - still a ok unit if you can get one for $200.

All the above have triple 4V pre-outs, rear USB iphone/ipod, bluetooth. The newer ones even work with Android phones - previously they were Apple biased.

I just got a anycar 1080 installed in my car and it has aux in, ipod and bluetooth. Steering wheel controls work fine even change the song on the ipod or my phone via bluetooth!

Edit: My car is a 2005 BP Legacy

Regardless, I\'d still like to fit my Pioneer DEH-X8550BT. Hard to go back to a factory setup having used external amps, aftermarket components, subs for the last 10+ years!

  4. I\'ve got all the 70\'s/80\'s classics on vinyl and tape: Fleetwood Mac, Split Enz, Crowded House, The Cars, etc... The sort of stuff they play on The Sound.

I\'m showing my age... nearly 32!

Some of the anycar units are known to remove the steering wheel controls - unless you don\'t mind not having them?

I\'ve got the factory Kenwood GX-201KE, 6CD, NZ new unit - sound is pretty crap, must be around 12-13W rms per channel, it has a tape player too - modern 2005 technology!

    Whats a tape player?

The black thing protruding from the centre: cassette tape (Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet. Class of \'87)

I had about 178kw on my stock setup (Factory V4 motor, 5spd, VF28). Link G4 brought the same setup to 215kw. It will be interesting to see what the next mods do... 6spd, VF22, V7 STI motor

V4 sti? and is new engine avcs?

Yep stock V4 sti motor, stock VF28 turbo. Yep - V7 motors have AVCS as standard.

Take the Monday off work... I don\'t even know where R\'s Garage is.

  9. What about all the BP sites that still have the "Ultimate" sign still up?

Upper Hutt got rid of it well over two years ago, and yet the sign hasn\'t changed; neither had Lower Hutt (Melling) when I was there last week.

A lot of modern cars can run E-10 (Gull Force 10, Mobil 8000), there claim to be issues with older cars (pre 2000\'s). I\'ve tried it before and haven\'t had any issues, it\'s only 97.5 octane but can one tell the 0.5 difference? I guess as long as your car is tuned on it, it should be fine. Most of us here will be running some sort of aftermarket or chipped ECU that can allow for variations in fuel. Or a reflashable ECU in modern (mid-late 2000 onwards) cars.

  10. A lot of higher end cars have the speakers sealed or in a ported enclosure to get the best sound from them. Unfortunately Subaru didn\'t build their cars for SQ setups - most of their speakers are run \'free air\' (unenclosed) so a lot of the sound is lost through vibrations in panels and air gaps; this is what usually causes the \'tinny\' sound. Many crank the EQ or bass to compensate - but all this does is cause distortion at higher volumes.

Ffitting Dynamat (or similar) against the metal surface behind the speakers and also on the metal panels behind the door skin does help to improve the mid-bass response of the speakers.

I have done this in one of my cars and not the other - you can hear a diffence.

  11. Melling drags on a Thursday night died out many years ago. For me it was about 4-5 cars ago!

The Hutt Valley has the bulk of the population in Wellington; so it would make sense to keep at least one there.

I wonder why they didn\'t get rid of either J/ville, Porirua or Mana - since they are so close together!
