You bring up a good point with 95 being demonized though, i'm guilty as sin for doing that, but what do we actually know on the subject?
The extent of my knowledge (and I may be wrong - idiot/n00b disclaimer there), is that the lower octane is more volatile, and thus more prone to detonation. Detonation happening when you have a high heat/compression going on, i.e. on boost, or loading a high compression N/A.
Is that 3 octane gap actually a big difference, or not so much? We know that running 91 for example, will kill a new STi engine - i remember a thread on the old forum about a guy with a brand new 08 sti who went to the track on 91, and brought the car home on a trailer. Subaru did not cover it under their warranty
