  1. how did we go with this, fellas?
  2. if it's the same set up as mine, there's a unit under the driver's seat that feeds the screen, with an RCA input labelled 'camera' ...try plugging something into that.
  3. that sucks... i just upgraded to a fascia and headunit. ..well, it doesn't suck that much, my new head unit IS pretty cool. Good to see these are out though, the world will be a much better place

    where are you based, kiwisurf?
  5. haha, yep that's me - might plug it back in when i start playing with washers/alignment... stupid CD's post a pic of the final result... keen to see how it looks!
  6. hey all, just listed it on trademe here - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=393296714 Unsure what it's actually worth, so have priced it a little cheaper than another that got some interest. Just clawing some money back from the fascia/head-unit costs to get back on-side with the mrs It's out of a Jap import, so will need a band expander. If you happen to need one to replace a busted/malfunctioning one, i'm open to all offers Cheers Stu **edit, sorry, i just realised there's a for sale section**
  7. Well, the head unit is in, and thanks to a couple of $16 adapters from repco only took me 20mins to install. Very impressed with the unit on the whole, extremely functional at a glance, and once i get my head around all the features i'll really be away laughing. Wired up the hands free microphone up by the driver's side sun visor, cable hidden etc... very stealth. Only downside is that it's ever so slightly smaller than the hole in the dash, and the top seems to sink in deeper than the bottom. Will try putting a couple of washers under the top screws... but that's just my OCD kicking in. it has 2 areas of colour, both independantly selectable: when the buttons are set to red it matches the rest of the dash flawlessly... although the white of the display doesn't really match the white of the AC control, so i'll leave that red also. Still looking to put a camera on the tailgate (hooked up to the camera input of the japanese nav system): anyone got any good quality, cost effective reccommendations? wide angle would be awesome but not essential. Pics to come, only got a blurry one taken on my phone at present. Very happy. If anyone has need for an OEM stereo with the 6 disc stacker (perhaps to replace a broken/malfunctioning one), flick me a PM/email... it's not much use to me, but a couple of boxes of beer would be
  8. Righto, so back in the game after sourcing a replacement car. Have the fascia i bought of trademe, and today recieved a JVC KW-XR816 from trademe (was going to get one of the touchscreen ones till i read the other thread about them not closing... and i dont really need video... yet ) Will install it this weekend - looking forward to the bluetooth pairing with my Android phone, and planning on leaving a USB HDD in the glovebox (or somewhere hidden, but connected) full of music. Next plan is to hit up strongforsubaru.co.nz or similar for an OEM clock and DIN pocket to replace the aftermarket non-functioning nav. If anyone has any alternative recommendations - let me know After a month of using the girlfriends car, it's good to be back behind the wheel of a Subaru!
  9. Whilst i'd much prefer the bastards were caught and hanged: i'm not overly impressed at the thought of getting my car back in less-than-great condition.
  10. Well, car got nicked: but looking to get another 2.0i or 2.0R with the insurance payout. at least the dash-fascia kit wasn't in the car at the time... shot!
  11. well, called around the towing companies, no word there: cops also have a register of towed vehicles, and it's definitely not been taken legitimately. oh well... time to hit the Gt South Rd car lots for a replacement this weekend.
  12. Mentioned towing to the cops, and they said they'd look into it: although it's a free council park & ride carpark... so shouldnt have been towed during the day. will approach the council RE CCTV Gutted eh.
  13. Hey guys My car was nicked from the Orakei train station carpark on friday: insurance company is asking if it has an imobiliser, i think it did but i'm unsure. It has the stock security system - if someone can shed some light on this i'd really appreciate it. Stu ps: licence plate FMQ414 if anyone see's it, though i'd prefer it stay stolen so i don't have to try repairing whatever the thugs inevitably break.... lesser of 2 evils.
  14. I had the same screen unit, I'd be careful before buying a camera as I did thinking there was an AV line into the back of the screen, because there isn't and you would have to have someone splice into the loom to work out how to adapt the input to suit. 2c Cheers: The screen is powered by a 1din unit under the driver's seat (which is still there): will investigate to confirm, but last time i pulled it out from under the seat, the camera input was just an RCA on the back. Yeah, didnt want to take a gamble bidding lower, so just hit Buy Now
  15. Hi all So a fascia kit came up on trademe, and i picked it up at a price i'm happy about. Will put a cheap 2din cd player in for now (hopefully with bluetooth, USB and 3.5jack in) and get a DVD player touchscreen in a few months when the cash flow is.... er... flowier. In the mean time, i'll also be hooking up a reversing camera to the existing screen in the dashboard. in the long term i might look into getting a NZ new dash pocket and clock for this area, depends how the 2 screens look once both installed. Anyone with a defective OEM stereo want to put a few measly dollars down on my (soon to be redundant, but fully functional, with band expander and ipod FM modulator) stock stereo unit? Otherwise will throw it on trademe to recoup some costs. Cheers stu
  16. what kind of OEM stereo do you have? if it doesnt have the in-dash stacker, but does have a stacker control, i may be interested in buying it off you: perhaps taking a bit of the sting off the investment in new parts? food for thought.
  17. Hi mate I have the exact same system in my 3.0R sedan... any chance you could email me the pictures with your interpretations? Been struggling to figure it for a couple of weeks :-[ Cheers same!
  18. Holy crap, so they are... still keen if you change your mind what does that make mine then? 16's still, i guess.
  19. , if you plan on changing out the wheels on that wagon give me a shout - i have the bog-standard 2004 2.0i model and would love some factory 17's to put on it not to mention getting the front windows tinted for summer and a second hand 2007 OEM stereo with aux-input... i have a very expensive list of treats to shower my car with: if only i had the money to execute them in the near future! also: hey Aim are you on any tech forums? i recognise your username/avatar. Geekzone or androidmobile perhaps?
  20. KonKon: i just dropped it into Hyper in penrose and had them do it whilst i waited... was sick to death of MaiFM works well, as one would hope. They charged me for 2 adapters due to the OEM connections, but was less than $100 all up, i was in a hurry and i hadn't booked ahead. Perfect danj; i'm playing around with some other control units for the screen to see if any operate in english. Just picking them up one by one off trademe for $10 each... about to try a panasonic DV2000 Will probably mount an android tablet in there, and hook it up to the FM modulator aux i have also had put in (as a temporary work-around untill i find an audiophile-level aux solution). Have you had any luck with AUX's danj?
  21. Update: for those curious (if any) the switch dims the display on the stereo, separate to the console dimmer... this allows the red lights to be controlled independantly from the white AC/CD displays. Not all that exciting, but should anyone in the future ask, now we know.
  22. Thanks for the replies, fellas (&/or fellettes?) This will be what i'll do then. Given they all seem to have fm broadcasting and headphone out, it'll give me both temporary (FM) and permanent (hacked in with silent cd) aux input. Awesome. Now to win an auction!
  23. ok, so next n00b question: if i were to purchase something along the lines of this am i able to hack it together to be hard-wired to power instead of cigarette lighter-powered? Would it be a case of breaking open the cigarette lighter adapter and splicing the +ve and ground into the wiring like i would a stereo? I'd mount it where the current (completely useless) japanese screen is.
  24. Thanks guys, have put in a 10Mhz band expander and removed the cardreader today... in the process i realised there are a TRUCKLOAD of cables/RCA's under the drivers seat. I only checked under there from the backseat, and mistook whatever device is lurking for an airvent... will investigate further over the weekend. oh, sidenote: does anyone know if theres a "silent CD aux hack" equivalent for the miniDisc player? i'll NEVER use it and thought it could be a good way to get a signal in from a media player/ipod/dvd etc without losing the OEM stacker & radio. So the switch could in fact be something to do with whatever is under the driver's seat... i definately prefer the Ejector Seat theory!
  25. Hi there So today i pulled the trigger on an imported 2004 wagon. Massive upgrade from my old Maxima and i'm very excited about it. Having looked at every BL in Auckland i got my wires crossed on some of the more trivial details: I have an in-dash stacker instead of a head unit with a changer control, this rules out getting something like an Anycar interface for bluetooth and ipod control... not a biggie, but a pain in the ass none-the-less. I'm not interested in FM transmitters and would rather just have a lot of CDs in the car in lieu of an iPod. Another interesting feature is a panasonic strada cn-DV150 7inch screen where the OEM navigation would go. I can seem to get some TV audio through it, otherwise its all japanese and obsolete. The interesting part (well, as far as i can tell) is that i dont know where it's sourcing its media from. Nothing in the glovebox, under the seats, or anywhere else i can see. Will take the stereo out in the weekend for a peek behind the dash. i think it may have some kind of speaker/microphone set up attached. oh, and i have this TOTALLY random aftermarket switch by the steering wheel which as far as i can tell does nothing, but is wired up... more info on that once i get behind the dash. So, put yourself in my shoes: i have a stereo that doesn't have an AUX/HDD/USB (my main source), a random TV screen (i guess i could get a band expander, but i cant feed the audio through the stereo) which i could hook up to something and set'n'forget in japanese, and some kind of funny card reader in the centre console which i think is from some kind of traffic payment system. I'm a blank canvas: what would you do? Use the screen for GPS? Tear everything out and start from scratch? Get your soldering iron out and dust off your C++ commandline code skills? Would love to hear your thoughts/ideas. My only real criteria is that it looks reasonably stock, and i don't have 2 stereos in the car Keeping the finances within reason might be nice too... i don't have MTV and Xzibit to pick up the tab. Here are some pictures which may or may not help explain my ramblings above....
