Dumb thing is that your star rating is only valid if installed professionally (otherwise byebye insurance) yet most installers don\'t do more than the default.

    /quote]

There\'s a pretty obscene number of "5 star" alarms in New Zealand with the bonnet pin on the radiator support bar, the siren right up top on the firewall and the brain just tucked up by the steering column, usually with all the immobiliser cuts done at the same place in the wires. Not that this helps the OP sadly.

I\'ve worked with a very good alarm installer, wondering if over this summer I might offer to have a look over alarm installs if people want and tell them where they could be improved. I\'m sure there\'s a good few members here who would vouch that I\'m not going to use that knowledge to come after anyones car later.

How many people actually check their alarms function as advertised? I didn\'t know the drivers door wasn\'t even connected on my old alarm until I pulled the thing out to replace it.

Most of the "5-Star" alarms straight out of the box are crap. Add to the fact they arent install very good and on the cheap. No-one wants to pay $400+ to do a proper install. Just another Insurance money making venture.

GPS, lock in a alarm garage and chained to the floor still wont stop it being stolen.

Its a Question of when, just like Death and Taxes.

A 5-star alarm installed properly will stop anything short of a towtruck (or someone with a few uninterrupted hours and a full toolkit). The problem is not the alarms, it is the installers.

The 20e's do go alright I put one into my brothers 250t couldn't tell much of a difference between them Really

An EJ20E with appropriate exhaust and a black-label 7R (v3) ECU will be a lot of fun. The green-label (v4) ones are awful though. They're not an amazingly powerful engine but if you set the car up right it will still go fine :)

You will never blow an EJ20E up without draining the oil or water. I can say that with certainty. They are non-interference :)

  3. ^ OR you could do it the legal way.

Here's the LEGAL process for doing it.

    - Find yourself a LVV Certifier. Get the car Certed (This means goodbye screamer pipe, hell, any of the above mean that)

    - Go talk to VTNZ Sylvia Park about a vehicle recertification (Re-vin is a misnomer because you retain your current VIN) These guys are good, I took my BC5 through them a number of years ago and passed with an AA grade once I replaced a leaking shock and a leaky indicator

    - Once you pass, Pay the $270 (for 6 months) registration fee, this gives you your plates.

Done, go back for a WOF in 6 months.

  4. Vague question.

What do you want to put in your V2?

You can use V1, 2 or 3 JDM (not NZ-new or otherwise) instrument clusters from any grade. Everything else is a different shape but it hasn't stopped people trying:

V4 ones have been coerced into place but require replacement of speedo cable with 2-wire sensor.

V5/6 ones have the same fitment as V4 but require a 3-wire sensor.

    V7-onwards you have no chance.

Part of the bracket has a spring attach to it and its for the clutch, so i will have to keep par of the bracket. The middle part of the bracket i can get rid off if thats what it takes to fit. Does anyone have picture of what genuine ARC pipe looke like?

That clutch spring is optional, I do not have it on any of my cars and you will have no problems by removing it.

My turn to ask a dumb question so prepare yourselves for it ;D

Is it possible to fit the seats from say an 01/02 Legacy into a WRX sport wagon or whatever the purists call them these days? Took one for a drive a while back and the standard seats are NASTY!

    Thanks.

Fronts will fit, rears will not. The rears are always a bit of a pain. You will also be left sitting a wee bit high as later models have a taller cabin.

The twin scroll components are on the headers. Thats just a Turbo back and should fit Sweet as.

The cat back section would not be a straight bolt on.

    /quote]

damnit. will have to get the standard downpipe altered then coz not allowed a turbo back system at the moment due to mechanical warranty.

shame it wont direct bolt on :(

    Incorrect

Twin-scroll turbos have a different exhaust flange. That is a standard single-scroll system.

However that doesn't affect the fact that you'd have to fit it turbo-back. If you want only to go cat-back (or downpipe-back as it really is) you need a 2.5" system which will bolt right up.

Cool I will hit them up. What are they like for pricing?

    /quote]

Ensure you speak to Gerald or Nathan and you should be away laughing. They have an official clubsub discount.

Oh and while you may find cheaper, you won't find anyone else who is as prepared to stand behind their product. I'm sure you read the thread :)

O- is there a way you can tell an afm or ecu is crap by looking at it?

I know the smart thing would be to plug it in and see if it throws codes- runs sh!t but this is dumb question thread.

    /quote]

If you're comfortable to pop open the ECU to expose the mainboard, you may find some burnt out components. Just remember to wear a static wrist strap or keep yourself grounded.

AFM, what year? I know the pre-insert type, you could pop off a cover and then you could see the solder joints and if they're cracked.

Iv done my purple afm before- soldered that up. It's the same plug/pin type orange. Guess il just break the silicon and check/ give it a tickle up.

As for ecu- I will open to check. Hopefully there isn't any burn/smoke/scorch marks from fried components

What are the symptoms? Physical component failure in the ECU is rare and usually would be an injector or ignition driver that goes pop.

    steering locks go along way.

    /quote]

    Only to stop retards.

The steering locks are made of hardened steel but your steering wheel sure as hell isn't.

BUT it will still slow them down a bit...

Nothing you can do will stop a determined thief. Hell, nothing you can do will stop a thief with time on his hands. Your security system is to a: slow them down long enough to get caught and/or b: find them once they leave.

I would be sleeping in it just hoping someone had a go.

I would love to kneecap a potential car thief. I was close once, chased a prick that was trying to get my BC down the road with a baseball bat. Surprising how fast the little s***s can be when a crazy white dude is chasing them and telling them that they are gonna spend the next 6 months in hospital...

I would have made good on my promise too...

Never, Ever mess with a gen1 driver...

Youll need a 3.9 ratio R180, the 4.444 ones are no good as 6MTs are 3.9 final drive
