  1. Heh, you have to remember that a 40 year old was only 29 when the 22b came out. I like the 22b, but I see it as a mildly worked Type R that gives a nod to the successes of Subaru in the WRC at the time - which was a car homologated on the Type R chassis. It is a collectors car. Besides, you can buy all the actual S5/ S6 parts and build an actual late nineties WRC car (which would be totally road legal) ... I'd love to know how much it would cost to make a proper 22b replica versus an old WRC car. My guess is that body-wise there wouldn't be a lot in it - assuming you were doing proper rear guard replacement and not just icecream container glue ons.

  2. I'm pretty happy with it. I'm going to get my bumper repainted along with the lip. It fits perfectly - I could drive around the block with it fitted over the bumper no problem. I need to figure out a good way to attach it that can be easily removed. Probably with bolts through the bumper up from underneath. It looks like this just sitting on the car.

    You can see from this pic that I have some bumper iron bending to do to close up the gap between bumper/ front guard, and headlight.

  3. So buy a brand new Spec C, strip it, and dump the entire running gear/ engine/ gearbox into an 1100kg GC8 RA or R. You might even recoup the cost of the conversion selling the brand new rolling shell. That would have to be the fastest 'stock' STi ever.

  5. Are you using camber bolts or do you have adjustable suspension? Three degrees is quite a lot; I didn't think you could get that far with a stock setup. I imagine the effect of the camber on the bearings would also be amplified if running particularly high or low offset wheels, as that would increase the turning moment on the hub? A low offset would presumably increase the force on the outside top/ inside bottom of the bearing while a high offset would increase it on the inside top/ outside bottom.

  6. I thought I would keep them for when I make the next set, or if anyone else wanted to make some. But if I figure out a better material to make some permanent templates with, they're all yours. We'll call it sponsorship =P

  7. I finally got a day off when it wasn't miserable outside! Here are a few pics from making mine. I used conveyor belt material from Industrial Conveyors (Rubber Bits) in Petone (Fitzherbert Street). It is 5mm heavy duty rubber with a canvas mesh insert, and at $70 a square metre, is waay cheaper than Urethane. I got a piece that was 1200x600 for $50. I've cut three rears and two fronts, with enough left to get one more each for front and back.

    I bought an old perished and cracked set of STi ones off WRX8YA, so I had mounting plates, and some really good templates

  8. Ok, I don't really want the car any louder. In fact I was weighing up whether to remove the current cat back ss 3" and put a stock exhaust on, or replace the downpipe with a matching ss one. Either way will cost me about the same I imagine. The stock exhaust will give me the least dramas with the bah-humbug folks, but most people say the best gains are made with the downpipe. So rather than throw away a perfectly good ss 3" setup which is not overly loud at the moment, I'm just trying to figure out if whacking a 2.5" or 3" downpipe is going to make it louder again by some order of magnitude.

  9. I wonder why they chose to run a Legacy rather than an Impreza in the GT300. Apart from the awkward rear wheel arch, that car looks pretty cool. Great to hear Subaru are making good sales. Hopefully they can ride sales of these new models back to the WRC. I expect that ToyBaru coupe will sell fairly well too.
