  1. Yeah, it might just be telegraphing up the uppipe. They are fairly easy to reach with the car on the ground and give a poke here and there. Feel around for the bolts as some are held in place by several and it might be a bolt rather than the shield itself that is rattling!

  2. All BP5 Legacies (~2003 on) have twin scroll turbos. Pre facelift (~2005ish square headlight) autos have VF38s (considered weak); manuals have TD04HLA (considered stronger). Facelifts use the VF46 I believe. Not sure if there is a difference between manuals and autos.

  3. Yes, don't get me wrong. You can have a lot of fun in a GC8 WRX for little money. It's just that if you start to modify it (say, as a club car or whatever) then you'll end up spending a lot more than the price difference just to get it to where the STi started out; you pay more for the parts individually than if they came together on the car (unless perhaps you score a wrecked donor). Just my 1¢!

  4. For maximum bang and durability, you want an R or RA for the unique drivetrain (R180, short ratio hardened gearsets, DCCD, and helical front LSD if you're lucky). Early STi motors have proper forged pistons too which allows them to take a lot of punishment in stock form. The bone stock RA that sold on here not long ago for 10ish was an absolute gem. Wishing I could've squirreled it away myself.
