So I built a few canbus/car electronic projects… anyone got ideas for more?

Found haltech’s documentation for their tire sensors and canbus messaging so will add that as an option at some point. That way it’ll just appear in the ecu correctly as if it was their TPMS. Though haltech only supports 4 tires, so either I’ll have to
1) limit the sensors to 4 total not the current 16.
2) same as 1, but will still have 16 saved sensors and can swap between “sets” or 4. This would require either canbus or wifi config to tell what tires are fitted.
3) divide the 16 to 4 sets of 4 and send them to the 4 haltech locations. Eg send sensor 1,5,9,13 as first tire front left, 2,6,10,14 as FR etc.

New number display arrived with parallel LEDs needing lower 3.6-4 volt supply.

While very similar and match the pin out, they sit closer to the board and so need a bunch more cutting to fit flat.
The main input capacitor was placed to fit inside the 8 where the display has cutouts. The new lower voltage version has the same height of the cutouts but they are narrower so the capacitor no longer fits. This isn’t really a problem as it runs without it, though it maybe less stable during cranking or if the alternator is weak and electrical load is high.
There are already 2 spare capacitor locations just for the display power.
I have updated the design for an external capacitor to be added along with 3 other improvements.

Today/tomorrow I’ll test the brightness of the new display.

The hardware is designed to be able to control dimming of the display in software. The LEDs can be pulsed on/off with PWM at high speed. The general backlight speed is 4kHz, but up to 10MHz is possible. So even on camera there would be no flickering.

Also had the idea of having the gear display read from OEM canbus as an option.

I did just go for a WOF and realised I’d only done 350km in it in the last 11months so my dollars spent to k’s driven is out of control haha

No and that’s a choice.
I used to spreadsheet everything, but stopped as it just started to spoil the fun. Adding each little bit wasn’t worth the time. Eg I got a few hundred in sound and heat treatment last year and rubber seals this year are likely $40.
For big project spending I would say spreadsheets work but day to day and little extras after the main build it’s just not worth it. I have all the receipts for my build and the total is staggering.

Also where do I put the rust kill paint after I used maybe 50ml from a 1L pot? It painted more non car things than the car.

Besides fuel isn’t a car expense it’s a work or holiday expense. If you track your car or have big turbo you measure fuel is $ per minute of enjoyment.

Jlcpcb.com seems to have 3x cheap shipping and 3x cheap PCBs each month now. On top of the first 5 small boards for usd$2.
Ordered a couple of small boards to test camera and video integration with OEM screens etc.
10 of one design and 5 of the other with shipping nzd$9.80. That’s around 30% discounted from the single designed 20 boards I got last time.

The parts to go on them still have usd$20 shipping but those boxes are the size of 1 or 2 shoe boxes since parts come on 20cm or 8 inch reels.
