  1. Well the photographer has a caged RS, I do, and so does Madmike - so thats a pretty good start Either way, I reckon its a good example for the club - having a variety of cars. As it shows we are all into different things etc And dont worry about cars looks, Im sure he will be gentle Plus my car has alot of gravel rash, and will probably be muddy on the day anyway - so yours is gonna look good in comparison
  2. +1 for Genuine filter. And avoid Fram filters like the plague. I also use Elf Competition 10w40 in both my road legacy and my rally car.
  3. Well... Seeing as I missed out on the first event - whens the next one? The RS should be going by the end of next week, and I dont have any events on until early August. AND... I have friend who does some part time professional photography, who would be available to take some photos. Some would be available to put up on the net - but more importantly there would be the option to get some hi def versions and/or actual physical photos (there would be some cost for this part though - but certainly not compulsory). So, we could turn it into a bit of a photo shoot as well. And allow us to bolster the ranks of the Legacy photo thread. Ohh and we will have a few more cars to show off too, as my co-driver has an RS, I have one and the photographer friend does too. And we would bring all of them as well. Anyway, what do people think and how keen would they be?
  4. I didnt see anyone mention the obvious.... (but Im old/blind - so could have missed it). Choose the right road, something with slow(ish) speed corners and plenty of them - so your not going too fast that you cant regain control/loose your license. Second - use your fricking handbrake to break the back out enough - then swallow some hard pills and pretend like you dont care about the cars health and do your best to control the sudden snap back as you regain grip. Ohh and do this in the rain. I should add you dont really need to modify most turbo 4WDs to manage to get them to get the bum out - but dont expect to be able to link corners with one without alot of power and a stiff suspension setup. But at the end of the day if you cant get the car to oversteer while factory - your not trying hard enough and you should probably go buy something RWD. Anyway... If your dumb enough to do this on the road - expect negative consequences. Stick to paddocks and/or small/tight drift tracks, although not the race track as you will most likely end up rolling the car if you throw it sideways into the curbing at a racetrack.
  5. Hey, sorry I couldnt make it - RS is still in bits. But gearbox and engine are now together. Just need to put all the little bits back on that got taken off when pulling the engine and changing things. So hopefully will have it running during the week at some stage. Can we schedule another meet up? As I am quite keen to meet up still
  6. I went through a similar drama 18 months ago. Made the mistake of going to somewhere in wellington that was recommended by someone else. End result they pulled the engine and confirmed what the failure was (piston rings fried in one bank). Then proceeded to provide a quote of nearly 10k... Funnily enough I got quotes from a few other places and went somewhere else. However they still stung me 1k for just pulling the motor and examining it etc. In the end I went to another place who did a much better job and replaced engine mounts, gearbox mounts, clutch, end tanks on radiator and one or two other things - bill came in round the 6k mark for everything. And this was buying new OEM from Subaru.
  7. Apparently the dyno day has been canned due to lack of interest However Shred will still be open and I will be there from 10 till 12.30 or so.
  8. Any particular grease needed or anything do? Ive had this problem on and off in mine for a while. Is it mainly a Bilstein thing? As I find my GTB has a tendancy to eat Bilsteins (on its third set) yet the STi struts seem to have survived longer?
  9. Well the RS isnt gonna be fixed up in time for this Its nearly there though - so I think I will spend all day down at Shred working on it. If anyone wants to come check out the dyno day or enter its from 9.30 - 12.30. Although it sounds like the guy who organised it (not Shred themselves) may not have many numbers coming. Address is Unit 3 - 4 / 65 Pharazyn Street. Theres a blue sign up outside and you will find me in the dyno area working on the white RS.
  10. Ive just been down there today (working on the RS) and sounds like there isnt many people planned for the dyno day. So if anyone wants to chuck their car on I believe its $100 for 4WD.
  11. so you have a motor to drop in I assume? Put new seals in it today and just finished sitting it in the engine bay. However still need to reconnect everything, install inlet manifold and injectors. Then get the Link retuned for the new injectors. Then it will be ready. So may well not be ready until next week
  12. I will be there in one of the Legacys - white or yellow is not so certain. Depends on if I can fix the white one up tomorrow or not.
  13. Just as well - cos if you were on foot then you would get beaten by my mum
  14. Mine did it before I got a new clutch. Was fine for a while on the new clutch, then a few launches later and it started to shudder again. Apparently (and this is coming from the guys at MacLennans who put the new clutch in) its due to heat spots on the flywheel as a result of the abuse - ie launches. Not entirely sure what else causes it, as Im no expert - Ichi etc is probably best to answer that.
  15. Loren has the advantage of a later model WRX - so has a decent sized top mount already and the room to put a bigger one (ala Process West/PWR etc). For those of us with sh*tty V1/2 WRX topmounts, well anything else is better if you ask me and room is at a bit of a premium, so without having to mess stuff up front mount is an easy and practical solution. I will eventually get round to going front mount I guess - not that I want to. If the car will stop breaking itself for 5 seconds that is! PS Loren, I look forward to kicking your arse on Sunday in the custard square....
  16. Ohh and if people get bored - theres a dyno day on at Shred Industries on Pharazan St, which is also where my RS is sitting. So could always go for a nosey later on.
  17. Sounds good to me. Although my RS is still dead, and I doubt it will be fixed in time - so I might have to turn up in a Gen 2 Legacy instead
  18. I managed to tow my RS Legacy Rally car on a twin axle unbraked trailer with a 2.5L Outback auto, was a bit iffy to be honest. Brakes werent up to it and I was constantly expecting to kill the thing as it was straining a fair bit up hills - especially Ngauranga Gorge!
  19. When I do an oil change I always overfill, Ive done this on all 3 of my subarus and only ever had a problem with a crank seal on one of them and that wasnt overfilled when the seal gave way (plus it was a high kays motor being raped on the dyno at the time). I normally overfill by putting in 4.7L or so. Enough that it registers comfortably over full on the dipstick.
  20. the original "transporter" wasnt so bad. but got very very unrealistic in each sequel... Shame really, as the concept could have been quite good.
  21. In my GTB I swapped GTB Bilstein struts in the front to STi RA struts, definately a bit firmer and bouncier. Didnt make a major change in handling, I got them primarily as I hoped they would last a bit longer - and so far they have lasted a while with no dramas. To be blunt though, if you really want a Legacy that handles and goes well - either get a BC5 or upgrade to a WRX STi. BG5/BD5s are just not good at being really abused - the chassis is heavy and the engines are a bit weak...
  22. Hmm, maybe interested in a wee while. Got another block to tidy up and use in the meantime. Hopefully will have the car fixed in time, failing that I should turn up on a trailer Bazza-NZ Petone beach front could work, only if the weather is good though! Gets a bit chilly out that way. But not a bad idea weather permitting.
  23. So have people got any more ideas on where they want to meet?
  24. I would suggest if you plan on giving the car a bit of sh*t to get a no excess/unlimited claims warranty. Otherwise have spare money aside for an engine. They love to kill themselves. Other than that, check the left rear shock isnt f*cked - they always seem to die too. The main things Ive had go wrong with mine (and I havent been that nice to it - its seen a few autocrosses, Targa as a safety car and been round Manfield) are shocks, bushes, brake rotors and pads. Ohh that and blowing a set of piston rings due to detonation = buggered engine. They are also getting old enough now that you will find rust in some spots, so check over the car thoroughly and take someone who knows Subbies with you to have a look at it.
