  1. Yea as Andy has mentioned, they should all be run on 98 if un-tuned as they all run super aggressive timing and will ping even on 98. If it's been on 91 it will be pulling timing constantly and then trying to increase timing occasionally which means it will be constantly running into ping/pre-detonation. The good thing is it will be detecting it at low RPM and pulling timing so it might be fine. Compression test, make sure its running through the VOD/ Turbo change over fine and a good service and mechanical inspection prior to purchasing would be wise.

In regards to road tuning for lower octane, I wouldn't wast too much money on that. just save up do some breathing mods to the intake and exhaust and get a professional tune. If you need timing pulled to run low octane fuel you could have someone tickle up your map remotely. but you would still need a $200 cable to flash it on.

Just prior to pulling engine might throw an old belt on and see if it starts. Maybe on the off chance everything somehow survived.

I'm a fan of easy fixes so this sounds like a decent idea. Although if it runs do a compression test before you celebrate

    So here's an interesting update:

Decided it was time to get tuned by Cyro in an attempt to fix the fuel learn issues, was planning to change cambelt, water pump and oil this weekend, before the tune. Previous cambelt was done 40,000KM ago.

Driving today, noticed car was 'idling a bit weird', as in wouldnt hold idle very well wanting to stall the engine almost. Coolant temp starts to spike, quickly pull car off the road, shut down. Inspect and seems okay (I thought). After 20mins of cooling down, restarted, sounded terrible and within 5 seconds heard a dreaded snap and engine died. Tow back to house, and yep as I thought, cambelt had fully snapped.

    Now to decide:

To go ahead and install the cambelt I got for it (and hope for no internal damage such as valves, pistons etc).

    Or

Throw the spare EJ20X engine into it (is currently an EJ20Y as manual trans') and go down the path of getting tuned for the new engine. Are the same year, 2006, hopefully should be not to many issues with the swap. That could fix potential stutter issues, knock issues and the fuel learn issues. Engine has 130,000km.

    All is character building :)

That is terrifying,  Surely there is a reason for a low mileage belt to snap like that. maybe a damaged pulley or something else in the timing related kit?

If the 20X is known good id go with that. or if you use your original 20Y at least pull the heads and make sure the pistons didn't kiss any valves

If anyone is yet to try one, highly recommend going on a Gumboot Rally. I've been on at least 5 and enjoyed every single one.
Two days of a selection of NZ's best driving roads, with optional gravel sections, and some of the best people you'll ever meet.

Man, I still need to get on another one of these! What root did this one take you on?

Ohh! Just checked the website, looks like it was Auckland to Paihia and back like the year we did it 😎

  5. Yea some additional clearance would be awesome. Throwing some larger meatier tires onto the Outback platform as is would suffice I think. Also when it comes to the beach its important to keep in mind that traditional alloy wheels are not ideal as they get sand stuck in the inside causing major imbalance and shuddering once you get up to speed. You have to clean them out al the time so getting some steelies that have a dish on them rather than concave makes things easier <-- hope that makes sense

This one looks slightly lifted though 🤔

  6. I like this idea, will keep an eye on this thread as its something I've been thinking of doing in the next couple years once I escape Auckland.

You could also go for a Lancaster or Outback.. no work to be done just buy it and go surf.

Not quite today, but, brake rotors and pads in, just waiting on the handbrake shoes to arrive, then can install them, along with a set of brembo calipers f+r, mca street performance adjustibles to go in at the same time.

Also tidied up the install for my roof vent. Turns out the sedans and wagons are a little different in their placement of map lights, the wagons are a little more rearward.

Did you get some oversized shoes for the rear brembo conversio,  If so where from?

Oh mate you don't want to see it atm, she fiiiilthy. If I'm honest with everything that's been going on and the dramas and s*** it's not had a proper clean for about 12 months.

Got a few more bits and pieces to go before it'll be ready, but this is a big hurdle out of the way.

You'll see it if you're at the clubsub meet on Wednesday ...

Haha, i feel like we can all relate with this. Glad its close now.

Regrettably I've not been to a meet in ages, whats the turnup like these days? seems to be mostly a facebook group thing now?

The GT3076r is smaller than the GTX3076r... which might explain that? I think the 0.82 would be too laggy for me... probably really good for a track car though.

Ahh yes of course, my mistake.

The subaru headers are just too long it seems... I think the factory system is probably okay as they would have done a lot of R&D

    and got everything match perfectly.

I think you have a really good point there. Front mount turbos with custom manifolds seem to benefit more in the TS world

  10. This is a very interesting read. I've always felt the TS on Subaru's have been underwhelming.

For what its worth, my cheap knockoff GT3076r with an A/R 0.82 housing on it seems to stand up pretty damn good. Very comparable to your 0.63 housing. When I was tossing up on either the .63 vs .82 hot side the overwhelming evidence of the EJ platform loving the ability to breath made me go for the larger housing. In the states they seem to toss the larger .82 ar on everything.

Had to scrap it because I had to move house. Currently looking for a rev c sedan body because I dont know if my rev b drivetrain will work properly with the rev d. But hey, open to be corrected haha

Any generation 4 cyl will work with a Rev-D because it is tunable. Rev-B will work great as the compression ratio is slightly lower than Rev-D 8.5:1 rather than 9:1. Makes it easier to tune on our trash fuel imo.. and your engine has already proven it likes to make power so pairing it with a Rev-D ECU and a tune would be ideal

Big day today, didnt take many photos but you get the jist of it. Dont suppose anyone has a rolling body lying around?

Ahh man well done on salvaging what you can. Whatever happened to that Rev-A? BE5 you had? I think now is a good time to pickup a Rev-D rolling body with ECU.  Plop in your powertrain and single T it. I'm tempted to offer you my "Currently" rolling body BE5-D
