  1. Finally... Some progress! Old V3 engine and gearbox out ;D V7 STI Engine ready to be fitted! Hopefully its in by the end of today. I\'m just trying to source a VF36 or 37 before the job is complete...
  2. Hey mate, thanks for the heads up. I discussed this with my mechanic yesterday and he has a V7 power steering pump that he\'ll fit, I just need to source a set of lines. It seems there are going to be a few issues and I\'m starting to think a rebuild would have been the easier/quicker option... Anymore advise/input, please add to the thread below: http://www.clubsub.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic,31605.msg437469.html#msg437469 Thanks guys, appreciate it.
  3. Fitted a silicone intake and trialled the Injen filter / intake to my EJ207 - which is still not in the car...! : Gave the engine a scrub too. Came out pretty good just can\'t wait to get it into my car... If anyone\'s fitted a EJ207 into a GC8, please could you let me know whats involved in re-wiring the loom. I have the complete loom, ecu etc and am a little intimidated by all the wiring! Thanks.
  4. Wow...! Thats Sick! Very impressive! Is it just a diff cover or a complete diff...?
  5. Bought my first GDB part for my GC8 EJ207 conversion. Just a pity the engine conversion will be a while... :
  6. Thanks for your input / advise, appreciate it. Will phone and put rego on hold today. If anyone needs and Version 3 STI parts let me know.
  7. The engine, loom, ecu and parts showed up last week Monday. Unfortunately, my old engine is still sitting in my car... May put the rego on hold as who knows how long this is going to take...
  8. Thats pretty impressive! I'll print this out and show my mechanic to speed the process up My V7 kit showed up yesterday so the timer starts today!
  9. Been rather busy lately... funkytown - At this rate you'll most likely be done before me! Mechanic finally did a cylinder leakage test (cold) which showed no issues at all so we're planning on doing a warm test and who knows how long that will take! The V7 motor I found comes with a VF30, but I want a twin scroll VF36 or 37. Does anyone know of one for sale...? I'll also need the exhaust setup too which I think is extractors, down pipe and up-pipe (not sure if I require all...)? Oh and the sump which I can get from the company supplying the motor.
  10. I'm still waiting on my mechanic to do a cylinder leakage test (been 2 weeks now...!) I've managed to source a complete V7 STI engine including all parts (turbo, ECU, Intercooler, BOV, Manifold etc etc...) done 77 000km's for $4500 which is not too bad, considering I'll have a complete motor + parts to sell. I'd rather rebuild my current engine, but after having to wait 2 weeks for just a cylinder leakage test I hate to know how long a rebuild will take! and the fact that I had my gearbox rebuilt by this mechanic and have had endless problems puts me off completely!
  11. I thought the mechanic was being a bit optimistic, now I know he was! I've just had a response from the Subaru dealer regarding a new shortblock - $2500 (+ GST) complete with oil pump and cooler. I though I'd ask about the head gasket configuration to achieve the correct compression ratio as I'd be using my V3 heads on a V7/V8 block (if I went with this option). Here's his response: I would recommend 1mm Head gaskets for this conversion and have the heads and block CC’ed to determine the correct compression ratio is achieved. Has the car been tuned? Or has it blown its engine? As these engines are not fragile from the factory so would recommend a standard rebuild if it is only being used on the road in standard tune and 98 octane fuel is used. ballsrburning Thanks, will still be interested (considering the mileage). Appreciate it.
  12. 8 months... Woah! I'm hoping to get the whole swap / rebuild done in a week and my mechanics agreed - although he said the same thing about rebuilding my gearbox which took almost 6 months to get right! Thank goodness for courtesy cars! ;D I'd be interested in a bit more info about the V8 longblock thanks - ideally I'm looking for a complete unit (including wiring loom, ecu, turbo, all sensors etc etc...) so that its an easy swap. 50 000km's is nice and low, so would be perfect!
  13. Thanks for the responses. I'm still trying to find a complete V7 - V8 longblock (with low mileage) if I can't find one by the end of next week I'll most likely forge my current motor as there's not much cost difference (compared to a new shortblock) The only benefit of the new shortblock would be it comes with a new crank too - although that blue printed Possum Borne rebuilt block is looking like a good option too... 14. Hey guys, My engine's almost hit the 200 000 km mark so I'm thinking about having a bit of a freshen up. The motor's still running very well, just suspect a slightly leaky head gasket so I though we may as well remove the motor and replace the bearings, rings, valves, valve springs, timing belt etc etc... all at the same time. Is it worth replacing the Pistons and rods or would cleaning them and re-using them be fine...? I'm not going to be running high boost so don't think its worth forging. I was in the market for a new shortblock or a used longblock (V7 / V8) but haven't had much luck finding a low km good condition block. I'm not concerned about the cost of new pistons / rods, but wanted to hear peoples opinions / experiences before I make my decision. Thanks.
  15. hijacka Regarding the gearbox, you're right however my mechanic's pretty open and happy to let customers into his workshop while he's carrying out repairs etc... and luckily, I know the guy that sold us the spare gearbox. He has a V6 STI RA Rally car which shredded 2nd gear so replaced the GB with a 6 speed. I'm a design engineer so went round to the mechanic with a vernier, micrometer etc etc... and made sure the gear was identical (as much as I could) we counted the teeth etc etc... and all seemed to match mine so I was surprised to find the mechanic had issues when fitting the synchro... As far as gearing (when driving), it feels the same and I honestly think I would have noticed a difference (hopefully... ). I've just taken a second alloy radiator (I had lying around) in and the radiator specialist had a look, checked the pressure (in my car) and told me in 2 mins its a thermostat - not opening enough, so car's booked in for Friday to have it sorted. Fingers X'd!
  16. X - sorry, meant to get back to you sooner just been rather tied up. I'm looking for a brand new shortblock or a complete longblock with loom ecu etc etc... VADZTER - You're right, there's no excuse really! I'm honestly over this mechanic...! Dropped the car off on Thurs. and went to pick it up on Friday after work. He was meant to resolve the cooling issue, however had only just drained the coolant when I arrived at 5:45. he then added an additive that prevents / blocks water leaks which I wasn't exactly happy about! Took it for a drive and it still looses the entire top-up-tank of water! He ended up blaming the problem on the alloy radiator (which has been in the car for over a year!). I'm trying to source another stock one for now (to test). Definitely time for a second opinion... Looks like I'll be going to PF Automotive this week, hopefully they can resolve the issues. As for the gearbox, it still grinds 3rd gear so the original mechanic will have to sort this (unfortunately!) As for the gearbox, it still grinds 3rd gear so the original mechanic will have to sort this (unfortunately!)
  17. Thanks mate, appreciate the info. I seem to have had cooling issues ever since fitting the alloy radiator, so very possible. Dropping the car off later today.
  18. Thanks again for the responses / info. I'm also leaning towards the thermostat as I'm sure it would run really rough if one of the head gaskets had a small leak. The strange thing is the water seems to be circulating as the fans come on, go off and on ( as they should ) the radiator heats up, the hoses get warm etc etc... I'm dropping it off tomorrow so hopefully can resolve the issues before any major damage! RAYDEO Appreciate you input. Could be a few things hey... I have a STI radiator cap ( 1.3 bar ) so replaced it with a factory one, but still has the same symptoms.
  19. Thanks for your input. Really appreciate it mate. Will keep this thread updated.
  20. Hi Guys, I'm having a rather strange coolant issue and was wondering if anyone has any idea what it could be... I have a V3 STI that’s loosing coolant at an alarming rate. I top the catch tank up, take it for a good drive only to find its lost all the coolant (in the catch tank). There are no leaks in the system, had it pressure tested yesterday and that’s all great, the hoses are nice and warm, not blocked etc... but the coolant is boiling! The water is being spat out of the over-flow tank which leaves a nice green trail down the side of the car! So we thought it may be a head gasket, however the car runs perfectly and still pulls hard. Planning on having a cylinder leakage test done later today / tomorrow. Any advice would really be appreciated. Thanks.
  21. Excellent, thanks. Please send details through KM's Parts included - Intercooler, turbo, extractors, sump, intake manifold etc etc... May be easier to send me a pic. ECU and wire loom included Your Location Appreciate it, the sooner I can get the car up and running again the better.
  22. I've spoken to my mechanic and he's agreed to pressure test the coolant system after work, so hopefully we can resolve the leaking issue. Unfortunately it sounds like the head gasket as the coolant's pouring out of the over-flow tank! urgh... I'm in the market for a new motor anyway, so will just park it up until I source a new EJ207 shortblock or a low km's V7 / V8 longblock. The gearbox is another story! I forgot to mention I run Castrol Syntrax oil, but the mechanic did not have enough when he re-fitted the GB so he just let me take it with the oil level right on the L marker and didn't say a thing! Very frustrating after all the issues! This may be a the cause of 3rd grinding on the downshift ( hopefully...! ) Once the GB is done I'm changing mechanics - for sure!
  23. Hi Guys, I picked my car up from my mechanic on Friday evening after having had a gearbox rebuild ( # 3 ) and my mechanic seems to have made do with the parts he sourced from a V6 STI RA (which had a shredded 2nd gear), which is fair enough as a new 3rd gear would have set me back $1500 - definitely would have been better just to get a 6 speed and I'm really regretting my decision now! I was wondering if: 1). its possible to swap a V6 DCCD 3rd gear over into my V3 DCCD gearbox. The mechanic mentioned he had a hard time as the synchro's were different and it feels very notchy / grinds when downshifting to 3rd! So I'm not sure which parts he ended up swapping over! Either way, its unacceptable after having spent over 3k on the gearbox alone over the last year. I'm having coolant issues which were meant to be resolved within the 6 months the mechanic had my car! I fitted an alloy radiator and have been having issues ever since, but seems worse now as I'm loosing an entire over-flow tank of coolant every drive! Needless to say I don't want to drive it at all in this state and risk overheating! 2). Does the check engine light come up when water levels are low? Is there a sensor that detects this prior to the temp gauge soaring off the clock...? I'd really appreciate any feedback as I'm extremely annoyed with my mechanic at this stage and will be going straight back after work today. I’d much rather change mechanics, however this guy owes me a perfect condition DCCD box after the $ I’ve spent on it! Thanks.
