Randomly found a video on the 5 speed and the guy in he USA who rebuilt 1000’s says the gear break as they are too thin for increased torque. the 2014 6 speed from the WRX is apparently basically a 5 speed sized gear and breaks the same. they replace the gear sets and have little to no issues. so stronger gear material is worth it compared to rebuilds or replacing the gearbox over and over.

  2. I broke one 5spd gearbox in about 7 years of very regular absolute death (launches, helis, clutch dumps, extended 8000+ rpm, you name it). Probably running in the order of 170/180 proper kilowatts. So that's AT LEAST a safe horsepower limit on a stock 5spd =]

  3. Could be a number of things. Is the car jerking and back firing at all? Is it a hesitation or a miss? Does the idle run rough sometimes, or dip up and down? What does the boost gauge say? Is it still building boost up top? The not wanting to start when hot thing, it's common for that to be the ecu temp sensor which is on the under manifold cross over pipe. Cheap to replace, kinda a pain to access on some models. If that sensor was faulty it could be reading a false high temp and trying to save the engine? I don't really know how well these old ecu's worked so may not be that intuitive. IME on
