  1. 9 out of 9. No guessing. Simple if you understand the rules already and understand how they will change. Worries me how many people think they know the above but are completely wrong!

    BH5 GTB Whine

Indeed! Thanks heaps for taking the time to have a look!

    BH5 GTB Whine

took turbo off this afternoon. it's well toast. has a couple of mm vertical play and a little horizontal play. Oil seals are had it. Have a new turbo and intake pipe coming. scored them for a good price, keen to get them on and get the wagon on the road.

    BH5 GTB Whine

So have pulled intercooler off, and slipped the engine intake pipe off the turbo inlet side to feel for shaft play on the turbo. Turbo feels fine, no shaft play at all. However can see quite clearly where i think the issue is, and thats the airbox to turbo pipe has pretty much disintegrated around the hose clamp, leaving much opportunity for the turbo to suck in other air and cause a potential whine. Will fashion up a band-aid tomorrow out of silicon hose to confirm that intake hose, not turbo is at fault. manifold will have to come off i think for replacement? A little stumped about the smoking though. It stopped completely once i got it on the motorway, and has not done it again. Possibly water got into the intake in the carwash? Have i just steam cleaned the inside of my engine?

    BH5 GTB Whine

Cheers mate. Smoking is a new habit it's picked up today. Will whip the primary off tonight(provided head shields dont give me days of grief like by BD ones did!) and report back here with my findings. Goes quite well on secondary, though that said its no where near as good as my BD5 RS, which goes much harder than this! (should mention that my bd is running a hybrid VF18/31 primary, and a VF32 Secondary) Pretty happy with the wagon as a DD, just as long as new turbo fixes my woes!
  6. The VF31/32 Combo is found on teh E-tune. Earlier BH/BE had the 26/27 combo (man) or 25/27 combo (auto) Not sure whether the rev. D used the 31/32 or 26/27 combo. Rev d could even be an e-tune? I know not much about BH model codes.

    BH5 GTB Whine

Car has 146km i think. I think i'm in agreeance with you.
  8. Hey all. Got a BH5 s***tronic that has quite a loud whine sound from 2000rpm. The whine is loud till about 2500 rpm at which point it quietens down. Can sometime be heard through to 5k rpm, but quiet. Very light throttle will not produce the sound, where a little prod will. something does not like being under mild load. First thought was the trans, as the sound can ONLY be heard when the car is in gear - but trans shifts sweet, and trans fluid is at correct level and in good nick. Wondering if its the primary turbo, as its just starting to come on boost about then? but is more of a whine than a whistle. aircon pump belt is shot, and looks to be the wrong width (too skinny), have a new belt to put on tonight, but not convinced it's an accessory belt. alternator belt looks new, but alternator itselfis a little noisy at idle (mild grind - unsure if this is normal?) Any ideas?
  9. +1 for bendix ultimates. Negatives are: Have a tendancy to chew out discs when not up to temp. Wear reasonably quickly Lots of Dust Positives are: Far less likely to experience fade Your legacy will stop on a dime. Swapping my 500km old top shelf repco pads with another set of ultimates this weekend. The repco pads are that bad/ultimates are that good.
  10. Don't mean to mention the obvious, but hows your air filter? I previously has all sorts of issues with bogging and surging in my RSB, and had a crappy supercheap paper filter in the factory airbox. It looked clean, but had about 50k on it. Swapped it out for a factory paper filter from Subaru and it has totally transformed the car. No bogging, no surging. Better economy and more power across the range.
  11. Turbos are the same size on a BG5 GTB. what's it like in the 2500 -3000 range?
  12. Hi Guys. I Need someone switched on in the wellington/kapiti regions reasonably urgently to do some work on my BD5 RSB. First up its sprung a coolant leak up the front. Could be a hose, but could be water pump/whatever. Its also due for a cambelt so might as well get that and waterpump/seals etc done at the same time. Was going to tackle it myself to save some coin, but i went and sliced my finger up last night while cooking dinner : Car is my daily driver. Anyone got any suggestions?
  13. I get 450 to 500 to a 53L fill in my RSB manual. Mostly open road, some traffic and some around town. I would have thought an N/A would get better economy?
  14. Good advice above, also, every spring and autumn clay, mild polish and wax. I find that by doing this i only need to wax in between. Its possible that being new paint you might need/be able to skip the polish step.
  15. yup sounds like the clutch. Exactly what mine started doing before it let go. Mine's on boost by 2500, lull at 4600, back on boost at 5000 through to 6500. Hooked up a boost gauge?
  16. I have a 3" diffback HKS on mine and it sounds awesome. Nice, deep rumble with no rasp, drone or cackle. Quite loud, but get a testing station WOF every time. That will likely change when i go to a 2.5 turbo back and de-cat.
  17. Agreed. Last night I had a spectacular drive on the commute home. Slight deviation off SH1, over a road that most wellingtonians will know well. Everything was right, car, road and driver were one. 14 odd Km of epic road to myself.
  18. cheers for the help guys, the earth was midly corroded. Quick sand and she's all good.
  19. Nope, normally starts sweet as regardless of clutch position. Battery terminals are in great condition, as are the (visible) cables. Am going to check the voltage of the battery tonight. After some more testing at lunch i'm more of the opinion that it's power related though. The in gear thing confuses me, however the other symptoms (ignoring the intermittent factors) seem consistent with a bad battery. Though my ICE and everything else runs fine.
  20. Hi all, Got a weird starting issue with my legacy. Went to start it yesterday at lunchtime, and It started fine. However it was making an odd noise with each crank (tapping or clicking sound) which i couldnt quite make out (also made a burrrr sound once it had fired) so i switched it off to crank it again to try and make out the noise. Turned the key and nothing. no clicks, burrs, chuffs or anything. absolutely nothing. All lights were on on the dash (as expected) headlights were working and have had nothing else to suggest that my fairly new battery is bung. Anyway, kept trying and still nothing. Out of frustration i slammed the gearstick in to second and then suddenly it cranks. wtf? clutch in and then it goes. turn it off again and again it wont do anything. Play with the gearstick again and a few times something happens for a split second, then nothing. Eventually got it going again though. Took it for a bit of a drive and good as gold. Didnt make any strange sounds when starting again, and started sweet as. Went out this morning, and oh hello. back to square one. tried roll starting it in reverse but it wouldnt fire, but then it cranked ok. went round the corner to drop the kids off at their mums, jumped back in the car, tried starting and its dead again. Tried the gearshift thing again cos im on the flat and away it goes. So. Knowledgeble people. Bad starter? Bad power feed or bad earth? Thoughts?
  21. yeah my left rear sticks like yours rico. Its like you brake gently and the shock extends, then it dosent settle with the rest of them till you take ooff again. Will try the fix this weekend.
  22. I've put 30km on my toyo proxes 4's, and got my first wet road four wheel drift on wed. Just about time for replacement i think. Good tyre, excellent in the wet but a bit prone to understeer.

    unknow problem

Pretty sure all turbos of that vintage use the same 4EAT box. I think the auto wrx's were just a factory retrofit of the legacy box.
