Also got told at the petrol station that running 100octane in my turbo Subaru will blow it up and that they're only designed to run on 91

    Time for cambelt?

Yeah some people don't know jack about fuel grades...
Just look at the recent disputes tribunal case about the couple "saving money" by using 91 in their turbo Japanese import European vehicle...

Man, I still need to get on another one of these! What root did this one take you on?

Ohh! Just checked the website, looks like it was Auckland to Paihia and back like the year we did it 😎

Yeah Auckland-Paihia-Auckland again. Some different roads, some the same.

Went up the East coast and back down the West through Dargaville.

2k at winger is probably $300 at a reasonable mechanic lol

8hrs of labour plus a new heater core... I wish it was $300 elsewhere.

You don't need AC to heat, the heat comes from the engine via coolant heating a part of the air / heat exchange unit.

That was how you worked out if the coolant system was properly purged in my 350Z, crank the heat and fan speed to high, (with AC off). The car would allow the coolant to flow into the pipe that heated up the air for the air con system, if it didn't blow hot air it meant you still had air in the coolant system and the coolant wouldn't flow into the necessary places.

$2000 to fix something that i'm ASSUMING is a by product of normal engine operation seems bizarre, its likely just a valve or relay - at a stretch maybe the thermostat isn't opening to allow flow through the block?

If it was cooling THEN it would be something more complicated like the AC compressor etc etc

    my .2 cents

    It's not the AC.
The passenger side doesn't get heated air. The car has dual zone climate control so I still suspect that it's something to do with either a blockage or broken/faulty actuator.

Winger replaced the actuator unit yesterday and it didn't fix the no heat problem. They then put my old part back in which I'm still 99% sure is faulty without even calling to ask what I wanted to do.

They think, but haven't been able to confirm, that the issue is with a partial blockage of the heater core.

Might take it to my local to get him to try a heater core flush or something.

I just can't really justify spending $2k on an issue like that.

I also got my recall today for the 2010 Legacy, Knew the passenger airbag was a recall but apparently the electronic park brake is also going to be replaced or some part of it as that a recall as well????

Fingers crossed they don't break the dash or leave it in a s*** condition will be taking a lot of photos before it goes in,.

The electronic park brake is a separate recall but they'll do it at the same time.

    Quote

A capacitor on the circuit board and/or the actuator stroke sensor magnetic ring, which is in the control unit of the electronic parking brake, may crack over time.

If either component cracks, the brake warning lamp lights up, but the parking brake may not engage. If the transmission is not in the recommended gear when the vehicle is parked and the emergency brake does not engage, the vehicle could roll away.

Cheers for that. Quick Google myself earlier today yielded that. The articles I found said to use a SPDT Relay - is that the same as a Change-over?

You use 87A - that's what the articles I found said to do.

Definitely tackling this next week - cos then my car is done, till I put the 19"s on it, once my 17"s have worn out!

    Exactly as @IZichard said.
Works a treat and the relays are cheap from Jaycar (SY4070):

Fixing the heater. Needs a new actuator for the mode controls and its well up under the dash.

I haven’t been there for a long time, any work you do make sure you ask for a quote or they can sting ya for miscellaneous s*** at full price. I got my 100k service done there a few years ago on my GRB STI for $1800 quoted (fair price considering a non branded shop was about $1600), went back another time for a check on something and got charged $30 for a bolt 😂😂😂😂 I didn’t ask but I assumed it was made of gold or something

Yeah got a quote over the phone and asked them to email it to me before I booked it in.

    Maybe?

Took my car in for its latest recall last week.

Borrowed a 2019 XV from Winger... Man they are nice. Radar cruise on the motorway is awesome. Just remember to cancel it when you come to a roundabout 🤫😂

Hit up Winger about coming to the party for the HVAC debacle.... Will see what they say.
