Clunking noise from front diff/gbox

I have a 2001 version 7 sti wrx wagon with the 6 speed gearbox (factory) and when I brought it was told this noise was normal for the front lsd.

Basically the noise sounds the same as brake pads moving in the caliper when reversing and taping the brake kind of a metallic clunk.

The front of the car makes this noise when accelerating, it will go clunk then when you decelerate it will clunk again and so on.

The steering is fine and the tires are good to no binding up diff from what I can tell.

I did change the gearbox fluid 4-5 months ago and it seams to have gotten louder since then, I used a Valvoline synthetic oil in the specified weight.

Is this something I need to worry about of is this normal ?

Check all 4 hub nuts are tight. And by that I mean loosen them off and see if you can get them any tighter. The GD/G series have an issue with hub nuts being not quite tight enough and the CV moving in the hub, giving a clunking noise.

As you said you were told the noise was normal for the lsd diff & as for the gearbox part you put in ( "factory" ) kind of suggesting that it came out in 6spd but the diff may not be

I may well be wrong but this is how i read it, some plated lsd diffs are noisy aye & when you turn you feel the knocking & shudder like a busted cv

Sorry I was meaning the car is all factory, Sounds way to loud to be normal.

Ill check the hub studs in the morning, it definitely is that kind of noise, when I drove it tonight I was paying more attention to it and it did sound like it was coming more from the drivers front some ware.

I had the same thing it turned out to be the rear diff mount

Tried all the hub nuts today, 3 of them were not very tight so I removed them and greased the threads and got another 1/8th of a turn out of them and noise is now gone. Thanks guys

Hmm my legacy does this from time to time, would it be worth checking my hub nuts also? Do they have a correct torque setting at all?

They will do, but just make them farkin tight. ;D
